Does GTA 6 Have VR Support? The Headset Joke in the Extended Look

When Rockstar published Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on 27 August 2026, fans did what they always do: they went through it frame by frame. Among the usual haul of parody billboards and background gags, one detail sent a particular corner of the internet into a spiral. Around the 17:27 mark, a character is wearing a VR headset. So, does that mean GTA 6 has VR support? Short answer: no. Here is what is on screen, what Rockstar has and has not said, and why the scene reads as a joke rather than a feature announcement.

What the Extended Look actually shows

The Extended Look is a roughly 26-minute video captured in-game on PlayStation 5. Because it is a long, uninterrupted look at the world, it is full of the small background moments that Rockstar has always loved, and that fans have been cataloguing since the first trailers (we keep a running list in our roundup of the small details fans keep spotting).

At around 17:27, a character shows up wearing a bulky headset. Outlets that covered the scene, including Road to VR and VR.org, describe the prop as modelled on the original 2019 Oculus Quest: a fabric front panel and visible tracking cameras, the silhouette that most people instantly recognise as "someone playing VR in their living room". It is not a Quest 3, and it is not a high-end spatial computer. It is an older, slightly dated look.

That choice matters. If Rockstar wanted to tease a feature, it would have no reason to dress a character in last-generation hardware. If it wanted to poke fun at the way people look while wearing a headset indoors, an older, clunkier model is the better prop.

Why it reads as a joke

Rockstar's whole approach to Leonida is satire. The trailers are packed with parody brands, fake influencers and cringe social media culture, and the studio has a long habit of mocking whatever the current tech fad is (see our guide to the parody brands and fake companies spoofed so far). A person absorbed in a headset, oblivious to the world around them, fits that pattern perfectly. In a game that is about people performing for their phones, a person performing for nobody inside a headset is just another character type.

The reporting around the scene is consistent on the point that this is a gag. Road to VR's headline says it plainly: the showcase "showed VR gameplay, but not the kind you were hoping for". The article notes that there are no signs of actual VR support in GTA 6.

What Rockstar has said about VR

Nothing, as far as we can tell. Rockstar has not announced any VR mode, headset compatibility or VR-related feature for GTA 6. The official communication, from the trailers to the pre-order information, has focused on the world, the characters, the platforms and the release date, and has never mentioned virtual reality.

The confirmed facts are simple:

  • GTA 6 is scheduled for 19 November 2026.
  • It is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
  • No PC version has been announced.
  • No VR support has been announced on any platform.

Everything beyond that is speculation, and we label it as such. If Rockstar ever does announce a VR mode, it would be a major piece of news, and it would come through official channels, not through a background prop in a trailer.

Rockstar's history with VR

Rockstar is not a studio that has ignored VR entirely. In December 2017 it released L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, a PC VR adaptation of the detective game. Reception was mixed: according to the VR.org write-up, its Steam reviews sit at roughly 48 percent positive. It was a contained, self-paced experience, which is the kind of game that suits VR.

Open-world action is a much harder problem. A game like GTA 6 asks the player to drive at speed, fight, fly, swim and move through dense crowds. Each of those is a known comfort challenge in VR, and each would have to be redesigned so that it does not make players sick. On top of that, a modern open world at the fidelity shown in the Extended Look already pushes current consoles hard. Rendering it twice, at high frame rates, for a headset is a different order of difficulty.

We want to be careful here: we do not know Rockstar's internal reasoning. What we can say is that nothing public suggests VR was part of the plan, and that the technical case against it is strong.

What about VR and GTA 5?

GTA 5 has a long history with unofficial VR projects made by the community. Road to VR notes that the game has seen a wide range of unofficial VR mods over the years, and it predicts that GTA 6 will get similar attention if and when it reaches PC. That is a prediction, not a fact, and PC is not even confirmed yet.

We will not point you to any mods or tell you how to use them. Take-Two's rules around modifications, especially in online modes, are strict, and 6cheats is an editorial site that describes the game, not one that promotes modifying it. If you want the full picture of what is and is not allowed, our explainer on why GTA Online codes and tricks do not work the way they used to covers how Rockstar approaches the question.

What this means for you

If you were hoping to play GTA 6 in a headset on day one, the practical answer is that you should plan for a flat screen. That makes your display and audio setup the thing that actually shapes how immersive the game feels:

The bigger picture: Rockstar loves a background gag

This is the most Rockstar thing about the whole episode. The studio fills its worlds with throwaway characters who say something about how we live now. A VR headset in a living room is a snapshot of a very specific cultural moment, in the same way that a streamer filming themselves in a parking lot or a man shouting at his phone is. It also fits the way the game nods back at its own past: if you enjoy that sort of thing, our list of nods to older GTA games hidden in the trailers shows how much care goes into these details.

Verdict

  • Is there a VR headset in the GTA 6 Extended Look? Yes, around 17:27, modelled on the 2019 Oculus Quest.
  • Does that mean GTA 6 supports VR? No. Rockstar has announced no VR support, and the scene is widely read as a joke.
  • Could that change? Anything is possible, but there is nothing official to suggest it.
  • What should you do? Plan for a screen, a controller and good audio, and treat any VR claim for GTA 6 as unconfirmed until Rockstar says otherwise.

Everything we know about GTA 6 is based on official trailers and statements, and the rest is informed speculation. We will update this article if Rockstar says anything about VR.
