Can You Get Fat in GTA 6? Food, Coffee, Protein Shakes and the Gym Explained
Yes, Jason and Lucia can gain weight in GTA 6. What Rockstar and the Edge preview say about food, coffee, protein shakes, gym memberships and how it compares to San Andreas.

Yes, you can get fat in GTA 6. Every official preview so far points the same way: what Jason and Lucia eat, drink and lift changes their bodies, and it changes them in ways you can see. Eat junk food all day and their silhouette fills out. Train at the gym and they get stronger, with the muscle to show for it. If that sounds like CJ in GTA San Andreas, it is meant to. Here is what Rockstar and the press who saw the game have actually described, what each food and drink is reported to do, and what is still unknown two weeks before launch.
The essentials:
- Weight gain is real but slow. Overeating makes Jason and Lucia heavier, but creators who played the game say it takes a "reasonably large amount" of food before the change is obvious.
- Food heals. In hands-on previews Jason restores health by eating, from an apple at home to a hot dog from a convenience store.
- Coffee boosts stamina, protein shakes boost health, according to Edge magazine's preview: both are short-term buffs, not permanent upgrades.
- The gym needs a paid membership, bought at the front desk. Strength work raises health, cardio raises stamina.
- Muscle fades if you stop. Gains need regular visits to stick.
- Sleep counts too: skip it for days and it shows on their faces, Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told Dazed.
- Nothing here is mandatory. The gym is optional and the story can be finished without it.
Can Jason and Lucia actually get fat?
Yes. The first confirmation came from Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, in the Dazed interview published in late summer 2026. He described a body that reacts to the way you play: food affects weight, exercise builds visible muscle, and long stretches without sleep leave marks on Jason's and Lucia's faces. Notebookcheck and several other outlets relayed it at the time, all pointing back to San Andreas as the obvious comparison.
The creators Rockstar invited to Rockstar North in early September filled in the detail. TGG, whose account was summarized by iGrandTheftAuto, said overeating does make a character heavier, but you have to eat a fairly large amount before the effect becomes significant. That is a deliberate design choice: a player who stops for a burger after every mission should not end up with a different character model by the end of the first act. Getting visibly bigger is something you have to commit to.
Our earlier explainer on how food affects appearance and NPC memory covers the full list of body stats the game tracks. This page focuses on the practical question: what to eat, what to drink and what it does.
What each food and drink is reported to do
Edge's 90-minute demo report, published on 29 October, added the clearest description yet of consumables. Combined with the creator previews, this is the picture before launch. Treat the effects as reported, not final: Rockstar has not published a stats sheet, and the numbers can change in a day-one patch.
| Item | Where you get it | Reported effect | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast food (Burger Shot, Cluckin' Bell) | Drive-thrus and restaurants | Restores health, adds weight if overdone | Creator previews |
| Snacks (hot dog, apple) | Convenience stores, the safehouse kitchen | Restores health | Creator previews |
| Coffee | Cafes, convenience stores | Temporary stamina boost | Edge |
| Energy drinks | Gym vending machines | Temporary stamina boost before a workout | Creator previews |
| Protein shake | Gym vending machines | Temporary health boost, makes the next workout more effective | Edge, creator previews |
| Cigarettes | Stores | Refill part of the Focus meter | Creator previews |
A few details stand out. First, food is no longer just a health pack you walk into. Previews describe Jason ordering at a drive-thru window, eating at a table inside a restaurant and grabbing an apple from his own kitchen. Second, the boosts are temporary: they push a stat above its normal level for a short time, then wear off. The permanent progress comes from training, not from the drink.
The cigarette detail matters because it touches Focus, GTA 6's bullet-time ability. If you lean on Focus in gunfights, keeping it topped up may matter as much as your health bar.
How the gym works
Gyms are back as a proper activity, not a backdrop. The Extended Look trailer already showed a woman bench-pressing a bar loaded with green "GAINZ" plates, and our GTA 6 gym and fitness guide breaks that shot down. The previews since then describe the loop:
- Buy a membership at the front desk. Neither Jason nor Lucia starts as a member.
- Change into gym clothes in the changing room, where a vending machine sells protein and energy drinks.
- Pick your exercises: bench press, lat pulldown, squats, treadmill and punching bags were all mentioned.
- Fill the daily ring. Each session has a progress ring, and about three exercises complete it.
- Come back. One creator reported that training three days in a row raised strength by a point and changed the character's physique.
What you train decides what you get. Strength exercises raise health, cardio raises stamina. Training both characters together also reportedly turns the visit into a date that feeds their relationship, which makes the gym one of the rare activities that pays out twice.
The flip side is decay. Muscle built through exercise fades if you stop going. That mirrors San Andreas, where CJ's muscle stat dropped when he skipped the gym, and it means a "max stats then forget it" approach probably will not work.
Why this feels like San Andreas
GTA San Andreas (2004) is the reason this topic gets searched at all. CJ had separate fat, muscle and stamina stats. Eat too much and he got visibly heavier, could run less far and had his clothes stretched. Skip meals for too long and he lost muscle, then health. The gym was the fix, and the weight-lifting minigames became one of the game's signature routines.
GTA 4 and GTA 5 dropped most of it. GTA 5 kept skills like stamina, strength and shooting, but Michael, Franklin and Trevor never changed shape no matter how much they ate. GTA Online went the same way: its character stats go up with activity but never touch your silhouette.
GTA 6 sits between the two. Weight and muscle are back as visible states, like San Andreas, but the threshold for change seems higher and there is no sign of a punishing "starving" mechanic. Previews also tie the system to clothing and customization: a heavier or more muscular body is reportedly reflected in how clothes fit.
What we still do not know
Several important questions remain open until the game is in players' hands on 19 November:
- Does weight change gameplay? In San Andreas, a heavy CJ ran slower and climbed worse. No GTA 6 preview has confirmed a performance penalty for weight, only a visual change.
- How fast does weight come off? Losing weight through cardio is the natural assumption, but nobody has described it yet.
- Can you starve? San Andreas punished you for not eating. Nothing reported so far suggests GTA 6 does the same.
- Are Jason and Lucia tracked separately? Each protagonist has their own stats in previews, but whether one can be heavy while the other is lean has not been shown.
- Is there a limit? The maximum and minimum body types have not been shown in any official material.
We will update this page after launch with tested answers. In the meantime, if you want a broader view of what else fills the map, our list of every confirmed activity in the trailers covers tennis, fishing, amusement parks and more, and the full Edge preview breakdown has everything else from the 90-minute demo.
Quick answers
Can you get fat in GTA 6? Yes, according to Rockstar North and the creators who played it. Eating a lot makes Jason and Lucia heavier, but it takes sustained overeating to see a real change.
Does food heal you in GTA 6? Yes. Previews show health coming back from snacks and meals, from a convenience-store hot dog to fast food at a drive-thru.
What does coffee do in GTA 6? Edge reports that coffee gives a temporary stamina boost.
What do protein shakes do in GTA 6? They give a temporary health boost and make your next workout more effective, per Edge and creator previews.
Do you have to go to the gym in GTA 6? No. The gym is optional, but it is the only reported way to raise health and stamina permanently.
Is there a cheat to get fat or muscular in GTA 6? None has been announced. San Andreas had cheat codes for max fat and max muscle, but GTA 6's cheat list is unknown until launch.
