GTA Online Character Stats: How to Level Strength, Stamina, Shooting and Stealth Fast

What are character stats in GTA Online?

Every character in GTA Online has eight hidden stats hiding behind the pause menu: Stamina, Strength, Shooting, Stealth, Flying, Driving, Lung Capacity and Special Ability. Each one sits on a 0-100% scale, and each one quietly makes you better at the thing it governs - you run further without gassing out, your bullets group tighter, your getaway feels less like a coin flip. None of them cap your progress the way a mission does; they just move in the background every time you do the matching action, and they max out fastest if you deliberately farm them instead of hoping they climb on their own.

The essentials

  • Eight stats total: Stamina, Strength, Shooting, Stealth, Flying, Driving, Lung Capacity, Special Ability.
  • Check them anytime via the interaction menu (hold the touchpad/view button) -> Stats.
  • Each stat raises through the matching in-game action; some (Strength, Stealth) reward repetition, others (Flying, Driving) reward sustained time or skill checks.
  • Special Ability recharges automatically and is not "trained" the way the other seven are.
  • With a focused session per stat, most players max every skill in under 6-8 hours total.

Where to check your stats

Open the interaction menu, go to Stats, then Character. You will see a percentage bar for each of the seven trainable stats plus your Special Ability meter. There is no in-game notification when a stat maxes out, so check back here every session or two if you are actively grinding.

Stamina: run, don't drive

Stamina governs how long you can sprint before your character gets winded, and it rises the more you run instead of hopping in a vehicle.

  • Sprint anywhere on foot; the game tracks distance covered while running, not walking.
  • The classic AFK trick: find a safe loop (a beach, a rooftop, a circular corridor), hold the sprint button down, and let your character jog in circles while you step away. A rubber band or a taped-down analog stick works on controller; on PC, some players bind sprint to caps lock.
  • Swimming and climbing also contribute, but running is the fastest single source.
  • Stamina affects sprint duration and how quickly you recover breath after exertion, which matters in firefights and heist escapes where you are on foot.

Strength: go punch people at the pier

Strength increases your melee damage and your resistance to being knocked down, and it is one of the fastest stats to max because it rewards raw repetition: roughly every 20 landed punches adds about 1% to the bar.

  • The fastest known method is the Pier Pressure random event area near the Del Perro Pier. NPCs respawn quickly there, and you can punch them repeatedly without racking up a wanted level as long as you do not use weapons.
  • Alternate spot: any beach or crowded pedestrian area with fast NPC respawns works the same way, just slower.
  • Expect roughly 1-2 hours of continuous punching to take Strength from 0% to 100%.
  • Strength also slightly increases your max health pool over time, so it is worth maxing before you start grinding harder combat content like the Diamond Casino Heist.

Shooting: Ammu-Nation and headshots

Shooting improves your accuracy, weapon sway, and reload speed, and it climbs fastest through landed hits - especially headshots - rather than just firing your gun.

  • The shooting range at any Ammu-Nation store is the most efficient method: complete the timed challenges repeatedly, since the game scores you on accuracy and headshots, both of which feed the stat directly.
  • Shooting Range Gold medals also give a flat percentage bump per completion, so replay the range rather than only firefighting NPCs on the street.
  • Combat missions and heist setups where you land headshots on enemies count too, just less efficiently per minute than the range.
  • Once you are near max Shooting, weapon handling noticeably tightens up, which is worth having before ranking your loadout - see our breakdown of the best weapons in GTA Online by category to pick what to practice with.

Stealth: crouch-walk in circles

Stealth reduces how easily enemies detect you while crouched and increases stealth takedown effectiveness. It rises through two actions: distance covered in Stealth Stance (about 1% per 40 yards walked crouched) and successful stealth takedowns (about 1.5% per two takedowns).

  • Enter Stealth Stance (the crouch button, held or toggled depending on your control scheme) and walk in a loop, the same way you would AFK-grind Stamina. This is the most reliable method since it does not depend on finding NPCs to take down.
  • If you prefer active grinding, missions and heist setups with patrolling guards - the kind you will meet in the Cayo Perico Heist - let you rack up takedowns naturally while you play.
  • Stealth is worth maxing before attempting a full-stealth heist approach, since detection radius scales directly with this stat.

Flying: gold-medal Flight School

Flying smooths out aircraft handling and reduces how much your plane or helicopter drifts off course, and it is the one stat with a built-in shortcut: Flight School.

  • Complete all 10 lessons at Flight School with a Gold medal on each, and Flying jumps by roughly 3-5% per gold medal - enough to push the stat close to maxed after a single full run. Our Flight School guide walks through every lesson and the fastest way to gold-medal each one.
  • Without Flight School, every 10 minutes spent actively flying (not parked, not in a menu) adds roughly 1%, which is far slower.
  • Flying also affects how steady your aircraft is during cargo runs and heist getaways, so it pays to max it before leaning on air support builds.

Driving: stunt jumps and clean laps

Driving improves handling, braking distance, and how well your character recovers from near-misses, and it favors skillful driving over simply racking up mileage.

  • Stunt Jumps are the fastest source: each successful jump adds roughly 2-3% to the stat. The map has dozens scattered around Los Santos and Blaine County.
  • Sustained airtime while driving (going off a ramp and staying airborne) also adds about 1% per second in the air, so chaining jumps compounds the gain.
  • Driving cleanly - weaving through oncoming traffic without clipping cars, or completing laps without collisions - contributes more slowly but works if you are already doing delivery or cargo runs.
  • Races and time trials count too, just at a lower rate per minute than dedicated stunt-jump farming.

Lung Capacity: go underwater

Lung Capacity extends how long you can hold your breath underwater before taking damage, and it rises for roughly every 30 seconds spent submerged.

  • Equip a Scuba Suit and swim in open water, surfacing briefly every time you are about to run out of air, then diving back down. This is slow but reliable if you have nothing else to do.
  • A faster real-play option is running heists with underwater entry or escape routes - the Cayo Perico Heist has several approaches that put you underwater for meaningful stretches, so the stat climbs while you are earning money anyway.
  • Lung Capacity matters directly for any heist with a swimming segment, since running out of air mid-escape can end the run.

Special Ability: not a grind, a recharge

Special Ability is different from the other seven: it is not something you train through repetition, it is a meter that recharges over time (faster once you unlock the Los Santos Slasher-style upgrades from certain story content) and refills passively while you are not using it. There is no farming method here - just use it less aggressively if you want it topped up for a specific job, and consider Vinewood Souvenirs or Vespucci Job store-boosting perks if you want it to recharge faster long-term.

How long does it take to max every stat?

Realistically, budget one focused session per stat rather than trying to grind everything at once:

StatFastest methodRough time to max
StrengthPunch NPCs at Pier Pressure1-2 hours
StealthWalk in Stealth Stance1-2 hours
StaminaAFK sprint loop1-2 hours (can run in background)
FlyingFlight School gold medalsUnder 1 hour
ShootingAmmu-Nation shooting range1-2 hours
DrivingStunt jumps2-3 hours
Lung CapacityUnderwater swimming / Cayo Perico2-4 hours

Do the AFK-friendly ones (Stamina, Stealth) while you are doing something else in another tab or on your phone, knock out Flight School in one sitting since it is the fastest return, and fold Shooting, Driving and Lung Capacity into heists you are already running - the Fleeca Job and other early heists naturally rack up shots fired and driving distance while you make money. Strength is the one worth doing as a dedicated 90-minute session since there is no efficient way to fold it into other activities.

Do stats actually matter?

Yes, though the effect is gradual rather than dramatic. Maxed stats give you tighter weapon handling, longer sprints, steadier aircraft, and better underwater survival - all of which compound during high-stakes content like heists, where a failed stealth takedown or an empty lung meter mid-swim can blow an approach. They will not turn a bad player into a great one, but they remove a layer of friction that otherwise works against you in every session, so it is worth clearing them early rather than letting them trail behind your character level indefinitely.
