The essentials
- Any 3.5 mm headset plugged into the controller works on both consoles. That is the compatibility-proof option, and it costs the least.
- A wireless dongle is not universal. On Xbox the headset has to be an Xbox-licensed model. Buying the PlayStation version of a headset for an Xbox is the single most common wasted purchase in this category.
- PS5 does Tempest 3D audio through any headset, wired or wireless. You do not need a Sony headset to get it.
- Comfort over three hours beats frequency response. You will wear this thing for whole evenings.
- The microphone only matters if you use party chat. GTA 6 ships single-player; GTA Online continues separately.
Under 50: wired, and genuinely fine
Turtle Beach Recon 70, around 40 euros. A 3.5 mm plug into either controller, 40 mm drivers, flip-to-mute mic, light enough to forget. It supports the spatial audio modes on both consoles because that processing happens in the console, not the headset.
This is the honest recommendation for most people. The step up to wireless buys convenience, not fidelity.
Around 100 to 120: wireless, the sweet spot
SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5, around 99 euros on PlayStation, around 117 euros for the Xbox twin. About 60 hours of battery, a USB-C dongle, Bluetooth alongside it for calls, and a retractable mic.

Around 300: the endgame
SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless, around 307 euros. Active noise cancellation, and a two-battery system where one charges in the base station while the other is in your head, so the headset never has to stop. The reason to pay this is the noise cancellation and never thinking about charging again, not a dramatic jump in sound.

For a game you play sitting down for long stretches, wireless is a convenience purchase. It is a good one, but be clear that is what you are buying.
Settings checklist
- PS5: Settings, Sound, Audio Output, set 3D Audio on and run the personal profile calibration. It takes two minutes and does more for positional audio than any headset upgrade.
- Xbox: install Dolby Atmos for Headphones or Windows Sonic from the Store, then enable it under Volume and audio output.
- Set the chat and game balance before you need it, not mid-conversation.
- Turn the TV speakers off rather than down. Two sources half a beat apart smear every gunshot.
- If the mic sounds distant, it is almost always mic monitoring or a boom arm sitting too far from the mouth, not the headset.
