Planes and Helicopters in GTA 6: Can You Fly, and Can the Weather Bring You Down?

Helicopters and small planes are all over the GTA 6 trailers, and Rockstar North told Edge that storms can buffet aircraft and even lightly damage them. Here is what is confirmed about flying in Leonida, what is not, and what GTA 5 suggests.

Planes and Helicopters in GTA 6: Can You Fly, and Can the Weather Bring You Down?

Yes, aircraft are part of GTA 6's world: helicopters and small planes appear across Rockstar's official trailers, and Rockstar North has now described how storms affect them. What Rockstar has not done is publish a list of flyable aircraft or explain how piloting works. And no, based on everything said so far, a storm is not described as something that simply knocks you out of the sky: the official description is turbulence and, if you stay in the worst of it, light damage.

With the game out on November 19, 2026, here is the full picture, split cleanly between what is official and what is an educated guess from GTA 5.

The essentials:

  • Helicopters are on screen in every major trailer, including a police helicopter hovering over Jason and Lucia in Trailer 2 (May 2025) and several helicopter scenes in the launch trailer (October 2026).
  • Small planes appear too: Trailer 2 shows Jason helping load suitcases onto a small aircraft.
  • Weather affects aircraft. In Edge magazine issue 430, Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut detailed a granular weather system in which flying into a storm buffets your aircraft, and staying in severe conditions long enough can cause light damage.
  • Not confirmed: the full roster of flyable aircraft, a flight school, a pilot skill stat, or whether fighter jets return.
  • Series precedent is strong. Every 3D-era GTA since Vice City (2002) has let you fly at least helicopters, and GTA 5 let you fly almost anything with wings or rotors.

Can you fly planes and helicopters in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not said "you can fly" in so many words, and it has not named a single aircraft. But the trailers make the intent fairly clear. Helicopters are not just background props: they appear in chase sequences, in combat and, according to press breakdowns of the launch trailer, with Lucia inside one during an action scene. That is the language Rockstar uses for things players do, not things they watch.

Planes are less settled. Trailer 2's suitcase-loading scene shows a small private aircraft on the ground, and launch trailer breakdowns describe more shots inside and around small aircraft. Large airliners in the sky can be set dressing, so they are not proof of anything on their own. The safe reading today: helicopters are near-certain to be pilotable, small planes are very likely, and anything bigger is an open question until launch.

For a broader look at what has been shown on the ground and on the water, see our breakdown of every vehicle in the GTA 6 trailers.

What the trailers actually show

TrailerAircraft on screenWhat it tells us
Trailer 1 (December 2023)Helicopters over Vice City, aerial news-style shotsAir traffic is part of the living city
Trailer 2 (May 2025)Police helicopter over Jason and Lucia; small plane loaded with suitcasesPolice use air support; planes tie into crime activities
Launch trailer (October 2026)Several helicopter scenes, including one going down behind Jason; shots in small aircraftAircraft feature in story missions

Two things stand out. First, the police helicopter: in GTA 5 a chopper overhead was the clearest sign your wanted level had escalated, and Trailer 2 suggests the same pressure returns. Second, the suitcase plane: small aircraft running cargo across a Florida-style state is a natural fit for the smuggling themes Rockstar keeps returning to.

Can the weather bring you down? What Edge revealed

This is the genuinely new information. In Edge issue 430, Aaron Garbut described GTA 6's weather as far more "granular" than GTA 5's, where conditions were, in his words, "generally speaking, either rainy or sunny or whatever." In GTA 6, clouds move individually, shaped by wind, humidity and time of day, and you can watch a storm build in the distance before you reach it.

For pilots, the key details reported from the interview are:

  • Turbulence. Fly a plane or helicopter into a storm and it gets buffeted.
  • Light damage. Stay inside particularly severe conditions long enough and the aircraft can take minor damage.
  • Boats too. Depending on where you are, your boat will either skip over rough water or "get really rocked around by it."

Notice the wording. Nothing reported from Edge says a storm can destroy an aircraft outright or that lightning strikes planes. The described consequence is light damage from lingering in the worst weather. So the honest answer to "can the weather shoot you down?" is: not on its own, based on what Rockstar has said. A storm could, however, soften up an aircraft that is already damaged by gunfire or a rough landing, and nobody outside Rockstar knows yet how the damage model handles that combination.

If you want the background on storms in Leonida, including the "Prepare for Hurricane Roxy" sign from Trailer 2, our explainer on GTA 6's dynamic weather and hurricanes covers it in detail.

Where would you fly? Leonida from the air

Leonida is built on Florida, and that matters for flying. Florida is flat, wide and wet: long coastlines, a swamp interior and island chains to the south. That geography rewards aircraft. A helicopter turns a long drive from Vice City to the Keys or to the swamps of the Grassrivers into a short hop, and a seaplane or small plane would make sense for reaching remote islands.

The map is split into six confirmed regions of Leonida, and Rockstar has also told Edge that parts of the north are reached later in the story, so it is reasonable to expect that how far you can fly early on may follow the same progression. That last point is our inference, not something Rockstar has stated about aircraft specifically.

Florida's weather also makes the Edge details more than a gimmick. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in quickly in summer, and a world that simulates them cloud by cloud means a flight can start in sunshine and end in a squall.

What GTA 5 suggests about flying in GTA 6

Everything in this section is extrapolation from GTA 5, not a confirmed GTA 6 feature.

A pilot skill. In GTA 5, each protagonist had a Flying stat that improved with practice and through the San Andreas Flight School missions. A higher stat meant steadier handling and less turbulence. Something similar for Jason and Lucia would fit Rockstar's habit of giving its two leads different strengths, but it is unannounced.

A flight school. GTA 5 had one in story mode and, later, in GTA Online. Our Flight School gold medal guide is a good reminder of how Rockstar teaches flying: short, scored lessons for takeoff, landing, loops and formation flying.

Restricted airspace. In GTA 5, flying over Fort Zancudo brought instant military attention. A restricted military zone in Leonida would be a logical equivalent, but none has been confirmed.

Speed and variety. GTA 5 shipped with jets, cargo planes, crop dusters, seaplanes and a wide range of helicopters. If you want a sense of how far that went, our rankings of the fastest helicopters in GTA 5 and the fastest planes in GTA Online show the breadth Rockstar built up over a decade. GTA 6 will almost certainly launch with a smaller, more grounded selection and grow from there, but that is a pattern, not a promise.

How the series has handled flying

  • GTA Vice City (2002): helicopters such as the Maverick and Sparrow, plus the Skimmer seaplane. No full planes.
  • GTA San Andreas (2004): the big leap, with planes, jets and a full flight school.
  • GTA 4 (2008): helicopters only, a deliberate step back for a dense, grounded Liberty City.
  • GTA 5 (2013): planes, helicopters, jets, blimps and parachutes, with weather that mostly changed visuals rather than flight.

GTA 6 sits closer to GTA 5 in scope, and its trailers already show more aircraft than GTA 4 ever had. The new ingredient is weather that actually pushes back.

Tips for when the game launches

Once GTA 6 is out, a few habits from GTA 5 should carry over well:

  1. Watch the horizon. Since storms form visibly in the distance, route around them rather than through them, especially in a damaged aircraft.
  2. Do not loiter in the worst weather. The Edge description ties damage to staying in severe conditions, so cross storms quickly or wait them out on the ground.
  3. Keep a landing spot in mind. Florida-style terrain means water and swamp everywhere. A helicopter can set down almost anywhere; a plane cannot.
  4. Expect the police to fly too. Trailer 2's helicopter suggests air support will join serious chases, so breaking line of sight under bridges or into covered areas should matter.

We will update this guide with the actual list of aircraft, controls and any flight school details once the game is in players' hands.

FAQ

Is flying confirmed in GTA 6? Helicopters and small planes appear in official trailers, but Rockstar has not published a list of pilotable aircraft. Helicopters are near-certain to be flyable.

Can a storm destroy your plane in GTA 6? Not according to what Rockstar North told Edge. Storms cause turbulence, and lingering in severe weather can cause light damage. Nothing reported describes storms destroying aircraft on their own.

Are fighter jets in GTA 6? Unknown. None has been confirmed in the trailers or by Rockstar.

Will there be a flight school? Not announced. GTA 5 had one, so it is a reasonable expectation, nothing more.
