Will GTA 6 Have Split-Screen or Two-Player Local Co-op?
Rockstar has never confirmed split-screen for GTA 6. Here is what we actually know, what GTA 5 did, and what to expect on launch day.

Couch co-op is one of the oldest questions in gaming, and with GTA 6 launching on 19 November 2026, it is one of the most common ones fans ask. Can two people sit on the same sofa, with one console and two controllers, and play GTA 6 together? Short answer: Rockstar has not announced it, and nothing in the official material suggests it. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is educated guesswork, based on how Rockstar built its previous games.
Everything below about GTA 6 multiplayer is speculation unless it is tied to an official Rockstar trailer or statement. We do not use leaks or datamined material here, and we flag every guess as a guess.
What Rockstar has actually confirmed
The official reveal material, trailers 1 and 2 and the press screenshots released since, shows a single-player story built around two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, in the state of Leonida. We cover them in detail in Who Are Jason and Lucia? GTA 6's Protagonists Explained.
What the official material does not contain is just as important:
- No mention of split-screen or local multiplayer.
- No mention of a two-player campaign.
- No detailed description of an online mode at the level of a feature list.
When coverage of the reveal described the "co-op" on display, it was the story switching between Jason and Lucia, not two real people playing at once. Journalists who attended previews have not reported any local multiplayer either. In short, the honest status today is "unannounced", which is not the same thing as "ruled out".
What GTA 5 did, and why it matters
Rockstar's most recent mainline precedent is the best predictor we have. Grand Theft Auto V never offered local split-screen on any platform. The story mode is strictly single-player, and all multiplayer lives in GTA Online, which requires a connection and a separate session for every player. Two people in the same room need two consoles, two copies or accounts, and two screens, or at least two profiles playing online side by side.
That was not an oversight. Rockstar has consistently chosen to put its engineering budget into one high-fidelity view per player rather than splitting the screen. Their recent games render dense crowds, long draw distances, detailed weather and large simulated worlds. Rendering that twice on a single console is expensive, and Rockstar has historically preferred not to compromise the picture.
Older games in the series were different. Several earlier entries and spin-offs offered shared-screen modes, but those belong to a technical era with far smaller worlds. They are a weak guide to a game that Rockstar is building for the current generation.
Why split-screen is a hard sell for GTA 6
Some technical and design reasons make local co-op unlikely, though none of them is proof.
The world is enormous and dense
GTA 6 is set across a large fictional state with multiple regions, and we break them down in GTA 6 Map: All 6 Confirmed Regions of Leonida. The scale question is covered in Is the GTA 6 Map Bigger Than GTA 5 and RDR2?. A bigger and denser world means more streaming, more characters on screen and more simulation work. Two cameras that can move anywhere in the world at vehicle speed double the streaming load. That is the usual reason studios drop split-screen.
Performance targets are already tight
Console performance is a recurring topic around this release. If the base consoles are already working hard to hold a stable frame rate in a single view, a second view makes the problem worse. Our look at the rumors is in GTA 6 at 30 FPS or 60 FPS?.
The camera and the characters do not fit a shared screen
In a traditional split-screen game, both players stay in the same place or at least in the same view. In an open-world Rockstar game, one player may drive across the map while the other stays in town. Splitting a screen for two independent players is possible, but it has very rarely been done well in an open-world game of this size.
The strongest argument for local co-op
To be fair to the optimists, there is a real argument in favor. A game with two playable leads is an obvious fit for a two-player mode, and fans have been asking for it since the first trailer. Jason and Lucia are a duo, they work together on the story, and they are even tied together by a relationship system. We explain that in GTA 6's Jason and Lucia Romance: How the Relationship Mechanic Works.
There is also a precedent outside the series for studios adding shared-screen play late in development. But there is no sign that Rockstar plans anything like it, so treat this as hope rather than expectation.
Co-op in the story: switching, not sharing
The closest official feature to co-op is character switching. Whether GTA 6 lets you swap between Jason and Lucia as freely as GTA 5 let you swap between Michael, Franklin and Trevor is still not fully answered. Our full breakdown is in Will GTA 6 Let You Switch Characters Like GTA 5?. Even if switching is available, that is one player controlling two characters, not two players.
What about online co-op?
If local co-op is unlikely, online co-op is a much more realistic scenario. GTA 5 shows how this works: GTA Online lets you team up with friends over the internet, run heists together and do jobs as a crew. Rockstar has not detailed what the online side of GTA 6 will look like or when it arrives. We discuss how heists might work in GTA 6 Heists: How They Could Work, and whether your GTA Online progress carries over in Will Your GTA Online Money and Characters Transfer to GTA 6?.
For playing with someone in the same room, the practical setup today is the same as for GTA 5. Each person needs their own console or PC, their own account and their own screen, and both join the same online session. That is the path to expect if an online mode exists at launch or arrives later.
Realistic scenarios for launch
Based on what Rockstar has done in the past, here is how we rank the possibilities. These are our own estimates, not information from Rockstar.
- No local multiplayer at all, online only (most likely). Matches GTA 5 and GTA Online, and keeps the engineering focus on one high-quality view per player.
- Online co-op added after launch. Rockstar has a record of supporting online content for years after release.
- A limited local mode of some kind (unlikely). Possible in theory, but nothing official points to it.
What to do now
- Do not pre-order or buy hardware on the assumption that split-screen exists. It has not been announced.
- If you plan to play with a partner or family member, plan for two consoles or two PCs and an online mode.
- Follow only official sources: Rockstar Newsroom, Rockstar's social accounts and the official trailers. Treat anything claiming insider knowledge of a local mode as unconfirmed.
- Remember that GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026. If Rockstar wants to announce multiplayer features, the coming weeks are when we would expect more details.
FAQ

Can two people play the GTA 6 story together? No official two-player campaign has been announced. The story features two protagonists, but a single player controls them.
Did GTA 5 have split-screen? No. GTA 5 and GTA Online never had local split-screen on any platform.
Will GTA 6 have online co-op? Rockstar has not detailed the online mode. Given GTA Online, an online component is plausible, but it is unconfirmed.
Where can I get official news? On Rockstar's official newsroom and its verified social channels. We update this guide whenever something is announced.
Bottom line
Based on all the official material to date, there is no confirmed split-screen or two-player local co-op in GTA 6. The precedent of GTA 5, the size of the world and the performance demands all point away from it, while the two-protagonist story keeps the hope alive. Plan for online play if you want to team up, and check back here once Rockstar says more.
