GTA 6 Underwater Diving Explained: Oxygen, Shipwrecks and Marine Life

Scuba diving is confirmed for GTA 6, and it is not a leak - it comes straight from Rockstar. The Extended Look at Grand Theft Auto VI shows a diver swimming through open ocean, and the studio's own Leonida Keys reveal image puts two scuba divers on a coral reef, crossing paths with a sea turtle and a moray eel. What is not confirmed yet is exactly how oxygen management, shipwreck exploration and marine life spawns will work under the hood. Here is everything the trailer and official artwork actually show, plus what GTA 5's diving system suggests is coming next.

The essentials

  • Scuba diving is confirmed through official Rockstar footage and artwork, not through datamines.
  • The Extended Look includes a diver in open water and a montage clip of swimming alongside dolphins.
  • Rockstar's Leonida Keys postcard shows two divers on a reef with a sea turtle, a moray eel and schools of fish.
  • Full underwater exploration - reefs, wrecks and caves - looks set to build on the system introduced in GTA 5, not replace it.
  • Oxygen management and treasure hunting in wrecks are the logical next step for the mechanic, though Rockstar has not detailed how the meter will work in GTA 6.

Is scuba diving actually confirmed for GTA 6?

Yes, and the distinction matters. GTA 6's marketing has been unusually tight, so most map and mechanic details before the Extended Look came from trailer freeze-frames rather than confirmed features. Diving is different: Rockstar chose to show it twice, in two separate pieces of official material released months apart. The first trailer already hinted at deep water with a shot of a diver near the ocean floor. The Extended Look, the 26-minute gameplay-style breakdown Rockstar published to walk through every confirmed activity in the trailers, goes further and places diving alongside basketball, base-jumping and jet skiing as one of Leonida's headline side activities.

What Rockstar's Extended Look shows underwater

The clip itself is short but specific. A protagonist is shown descending in full scuba gear, kicking past a school of fish in clear, sunlit water rather than a murky lake. A separate montage section of the same video cuts to a diver swimming alongside dolphins, which lines up with reporting that the ocean around Leonida is "teeming with life" rather than being empty set dressing. Rockstar also shows a glimpse of an underwater cave-like formation, which is the strongest hint yet that diving will not be limited to open water and will let players swim into enclosed spaces.

None of this footage shows a HUD, an oxygen meter or an inventory screen, so the systems layer underneath the visuals is still an open question. What we do have is a strong visual signal that diving is a built-out activity, not a two-second flourish.

The Leonida Keys: Rockstar's clearest hint yet

If the Extended Look confirms that diving exists, the Leonida Keys artwork confirms that Rockstar wants players to actually do it. The Leonida Keys are the tropical island chain at the southern tip of the map, GTA 6's answer to the real Florida Keys, and they sit inside the wider archipelago covered in the map of Leonida's confirmed regions. Rockstar's official postcard image for the Keys is not a landscape shot. It is a reef scene: two divers gliding over coral, a sea turtle identified by fans as a hawksbill, a moray eel tucked into the rocks, and multiple schools of fish. Studios do not usually spend a hero image on an activity that is a throwaway feature, so this is being read as a statement that diving and the marine ecosystem are a real pillar of the Keys specifically.

How diving worked in GTA 5 (and why it matters for GTA 6)

GTA 5 is the template Rockstar is almost certainly iterating on, so it is worth knowing exactly how it worked. Swimming underwater without gear drained a stamina-like oxygen meter in the bottom right of the screen, and running out of air started to damage the player. Diving deeper or staying down longer required either holding your breath carefully or collecting a scuba suit, which characters equipped automatically when they left a submarine or a Dinghy while in the water. Wearing the suit let players dive indefinitely without watching the meter at all, in exchange for exploring further from the surface. GTA 5 then used that system to gate a real side activity: sunken wrecks and downed planes scattered across the map hid weapons, cash and collectibles, discoverable by players willing to dive down and search them, as covered in our guide to GTA 5's shipwrecks and hidden underwater treasures. That loop, dive down, manage air, find loot, is the most likely starting point for GTA 6 rather than a system built from scratch.

Oxygen management: what to expect in GTA 6

Rockstar has not shown or confirmed an oxygen mechanic for GTA 6. Given that the studio kept GTA 5's meter for over a decade of updates and that diving is being marketed as a bigger activity this time, not a smaller one, the safest expectation is that oxygen management returns in a similar or expanded form rather than disappearing. A few things point that way: the Extended Look shows a diver in full gear rather than free-diving, which suggests equipment-gated depth the same way GTA 5's scuba suit was; the underwater cave shot implies confined spaces where surfacing for air is not always an option, which is exactly the kind of scenario that makes an oxygen meter meaningful instead of decorative; and Rockstar's character-progression systems elsewhere in the trailers (stamina, swimming speed) suggest stats that could plausibly extend to lung capacity again. Treat any specific number, upgrade path or unlock tied to oxygen as speculation until Rockstar confirms it directly.

Shipwrecks and underwater caves: does treasure hunting return?

The Extended Look's brief cave shot is the detail worth watching. GTA 5 had wrecks but nothing as enclosed as a proper cave system, so if that shot holds up in the full game it would be a genuine upgrade to underwater exploration rather than a reskin. Combined with Leonida's setting, a state built around swamps, the Everglades and a coastline dense with keys and inlets, there is plenty of room for wrecks, sunken planes and flooded structures the way GTA 5 scattered them across Los Santos's coastline. Nothing here is confirmed as a specific reward system yet: no leaked mission names, no loot tables, nothing beyond the visual. The realistic read is "expect wreck exploration to exist in some form," not "expect a specific treasure hunt questline."

Marine life confirmed so far

Unlike the mechanics, the animals themselves are already partly confirmed on screen. Dolphins appear in the Extended Look's swimming montage. The Leonida Keys artwork adds a sea turtle and a moray eel on the reef itself, plus unnamed schools of reef fish. Manatees and stingrays have also been spotted in wider trailer footage of Leonida's waterways, fitting the Florida-inspired setting, and are covered in full in our roundup of every animal and creature confirmed in the GTA 6 trailers. None of this is a complete list. Rockstar has historically kept a large chunk of its wildlife roster hidden until launch, so expect the underwater cast to grow past what has been shown so far.

What we still do not know

Rockstar has not said whether diving requires a purchased or found scuba suit, whether there is a stat or upgrade system for lung capacity, whether wrecks carry unique collectibles tied to 100% completion, or how deep the map's water actually goes. All of that will most likely come out in patch notes, previews or the strategy guide closer to launch on 19 November 2026. Until then, treat everything beyond "scuba diving exists and the ocean has wildlife" as an informed expectation built on GTA 5's precedent, not a confirmed feature.
