How the ranking is actually tested
Top speed stats you find in the GTA Online garage menu are estimates, and they are not reliable for ranking cars against each other. The community-standard method is a straight-line run at Los Santos International Airport, fully upgraded (engine, transmission and any relevant aero parts maxed out), no slipstream, no ramps, and the number logged is the highest sustained speed the car holds for at least a couple of seconds. That is why the numbers above sometimes contradict the in-game stat bars: a car with a shorter bar can still out-run one with a longer bar once both are maxed out and tested identically.
If you are chasing records yourself, run each car at least three times and take the best clean pass. Wind, minor collisions with scenery, and even which direction you are driving on the runway can shave off a mile per hour or two.
Why the Vigilante, Scramjet and weaponized cars are not on this list
The Vigilante hits a tested 146.75 mph and the Scramjet goes even faster, but both rely on a rocket boost that only lasts a few seconds before it needs to recharge. That makes them the fastest thing on the road in short bursts, useless for anything resembling a sustained top-speed comparison, and outside the fair-race meta most GTA Online crews use. If your goal is winning a standard street race rather than a one-off drag strip flex, none of the boost vehicles belong in this ranking, and most Rockstar-created races disable weaponized vehicles anyway.
HSW upgrades: the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S wildcard
HSW, short for Hao's Special Works, is the name of the premium upgrade shop Rockstar added with the PS5/Xbox Series X|S expanded edition. It unlocks a second, much higher top speed tier for a growing list of vehicles, but only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and only after you unlock the upgrade through Hao's garage. The Banshee GTS with HSW installed reaches 172.50 mph, a jump of over 30 mph on its base statistics. Not every car in the top 15 above has an HSW variant yet, so if you play on PS4, Xbox One or PC, ignore the HSW numbers entirely and use the base ranking - it is the one that actually applies to you.
You have to upgrade the car to hit these numbers
None of the speeds above are stock. Every car in the top 15 needs a fully upgraded engine (level 4) and transmission at minimum, plus any turbo or aero part the vehicle supports, before it gets anywhere near its tested top speed. Buy the car, drive straight to a Los Santos Customs, and max out the engine and transmission first - those two upgrades alone account for most of the speed gain over a stock configuration. Race-tuned suspension and lighter armor plating help handling and durability, but do not meaningfully change top speed, so do not expect them to move you up this list.
