Best controller for GTA 6, and when not to buy one

GTA 6 arrives on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Both consoles come with a controller in the box, so the honest starting point for this guide is that you probably do not need to buy one at all.

What follows is for the three cases where a purchase is actually justified: a second pad, a pad whose sticks have started to drift, and the jump to a pro controller. Prices were read on 1 September 2026 and move, so treat them as brackets.

The essentials

• The pad in the box plays GTA 6 perfectly. Everything below buys comfort, durability or a spare.
• Rockstar has published no controller feature list. Expect the DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers to be used, on the strength of the studio's recent PS5 work, but treat that as an expectation and not a confirmed fact.
• Battery is the real daily difference: a DualSense runs about 8 hours, an Xbox pad about 40 on AA batteries.
• Stick drift is the one problem money genuinely solves, and only the DualSense Edge solves it properly.
• A pro controller will not make you better at GTA. It makes long sessions more comfortable, which is a smaller claim and a truer one.

The DualSense is the more interesting piece of hardware and the more annoying one to live with: you will be plugging it in mid-session unless you buy a dock. The Xbox pad is the opposite, unremarkable and impossible to catch out on battery.

When a pro controller is worth the money

Three features justify the price, and only two of them matter in GTA 6.

• Back paddles. Real gain. In a game that constantly mixes driving, shooting and looking around, mapping handbrake or cover to a paddle means your thumbs never leave the sticks.
• Replaceable parts. Real gain, and the reason the Edge exists.
• Hair trigger locks. Marginal here. They shorten trigger travel for shooters, but GTA spends most of its time driving, where you want the full analogue range.

DualSense Edge, around 199 euros

The only mainstream controller whose stick modules unscrew. When a stick starts drifting, you replace a module for a fraction of a new pad instead of throwing the whole thing away, which over a console generation is the argument. The catches are real too: it costs nearly three times a standard DualSense, and its battery life is worse, not better.

Xbox Elite Series 2, around 179 euros

Four paddles, adjustable stick tension, swappable thumbsticks and D-pads, a rechargeable battery good for about 40 hours, and a case that makes it the obvious travel pad. It is the more complete package of the two; it is also the one you cannot repair when a stick goes.

Before launch day

1. Update the controller firmware. On PS5 it is under Accessories, on Xbox through the Xbox Accessories app. Both fix real connection and drift-adjacent bugs.
2. If your sticks already drift, deal with it now. Deadzone tweaks hide it; they do not fix it.
3. Charge everything the night before. A 90 GB download and a flat pad make for a poor launch evening.
