GTA 6 at The Game Awards 2026: Eligible, but Can It Win Game of the Year?

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. The Game Awards cutoff is November 20 at 9 p.m. PT. That one-day margin means Rockstar's open world is officially in the running for Game of the Year at the December 10 ceremony in Los Angeles. Being eligible and being nominated are two different things, though, and winning is a third. Here is what the rules actually say, what history suggests, and what could stand in the way.

The essentials

• Eligible: yes. The Game Awards FAQ says games must be "commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT". GTA 6 is out on November 19.
• No special treatment. The cutoff sits in the same late-November window as previous years. Rockstar did not get an exception.
• Ceremony: Thursday, December 10, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Geoff Keighley.
• Nominees: chosen by a jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets, expected in mid-November.
• Winners: 90% jury vote, 10% public fan vote. Fan voting closes on December 9 at 6 p.m. PT.
• The catch: jurors will have very little time with a game this size before they vote.

What the eligibility rule says

For years, fans worried that a mid-November GTA 6 release would land on the wrong side of The Game Awards cutoff and push the game into the 2027 ceremony. That worry is now settled. The official FAQ for the 2026 show sets the deadline for every category at Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT, and it gives the fan-voted Players' Voice category until November 30.

GTA 6 unlocks at midnight in each store region's own time zone on November 19 (see what time GTA 6 unlocks in your timezone). Even the last regions to unlock are well inside the window. In plain terms, the game clears the bar with a day to spare.

Kotaku and ActuGaming both point out that this is not a rule written for Rockstar. The 2025 deadline was November 21, and earlier shows used similar late-November cutoffs. GTA 6 simply happens to ship right before the line.

How nominees and winners are chosen

This is where eligibility stops being the whole story. According to the official FAQ:

The key point: the nominee ballots are filled in before most of the world has played GTA 6. Nominees are traditionally announced in mid-November, about a month before the show. With a November 19 launch, jurors either vote on GTA 6 with early access, or they vote on faith, or they leave it off.

The real obstacle: time with the game

Rockstar open worlds are long. Red Dead Redemption 2's story alone runs dozens of hours, and GTA 6 is expected to be at least as large. A juror who receives the game on launch day has roughly three weeks before the final vote, and even less if they are also writing a review.

That makes the question of early copies central. As we explained in how GTA 6 reviews could work without classic review codes, Rockstar has not publicly detailed a review program, and nothing official confirms when or whether outlets get the game early. Press previews such as Edge's 90-minute hands-off demo are a look at the game, not a full playthrough. Until Rockstar says more, treat any claim about review codes as unconfirmed.

Two scenarios are realistic:

1. Early access for the press. If outlets get the game ahead of launch, GTA 6 is likely to make the Game of the Year shortlist on the strength of reviews, as its predecessors did.
2. No early access. Jurors could still nominate it on the basis of a few days of play, or hold off. Either way the debate about whether it "deserved" a slot would follow the show.

What history says: GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar's last two big launches give a mixed but useful picture.

• GTA 5 (2013) won Game of the Year at the Spike VGX 2013, the predecessor of The Game Awards, along with Best Soundtrack. It beat a very strong field that included The Last of Us, which took several other prizes that night.
• Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) went into The Game Awards 2018 as a favorite and won four awards: Best Narrative, Best Score/Music, Best Audio Design and Best Performance (Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan). It tied the record for most wins at the time. But Game of the Year went to God of War, which also took Best Game Direction.

The lesson from 2018 is that a late-October Rockstar release can sweep the craft categories and still lose the top prize to a game the jury had lived with for months. GTA 6 is launching even later than RDR2 did.

GTA 6 also has a track record at the show without even being out: it won Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards 2025, the same night Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took Game of the Year with a record nine wins.

Who GTA 6 is up against

Without a published nominee list, any field is speculation. Going by coverage up to early November, the names that come up most are:

• Resident Evil Requiem, released February 27, 2026, and the contender most outlets single out as the alternative if GTA 6 falls short.
• Control Resonant, Pragmata, Crimson Desert, Phantom Blade Zero and Saros, all cited in GOTY prediction lists.

Several outlets describe 2026 as an open year with no runaway critical favorite, which plays in GTA 6's favor if jurors get enough time with it. Kotaku also reported that prediction markets had GTA 6 as the favorite to win. Betting odds are not a source of truth, but they show how the conversation is leaning.

Which categories could GTA 6 realistically land?

Based on what Rockstar has shown in trailers, and on what RDR2 won in 2018, these are the categories where GTA 6 would make most sense as a nominee. None of this is confirmed.

The trailer music alone has already drawn attention: the launch trailer's track, Flower in a Hurricane, shows how central licensed music is to the presentation.

Online categories are a different story. Rockstar has not given a launch date for a GTA 6 online mode, so any multiplayer-specific category looks unlikely for 2026.

Key dates to keep in mind

Our take

GTA 6 is eligible, and on paper it is the favorite. But The Game Awards is a jury show, and the jury votes on nominees before launch and on winners three weeks after it. If Rockstar gets the game into critics' hands early, a Game of the Year nomination looks likely and a win is very possible. If not, 2018 is the warning: Rockstar can dominate the craft awards and still miss the big one.
