The Altruist Cult in GTA 5: Cannibals, a Secret Camp and Trevor's Betrayal

GTA 5 hides one of its darkest secrets not in a mission, but in a random event tucked into the wilderness northwest of Los Santos: the Altruist Cult. Deliver enough strangers to their walled camp and they will pay Trevor Philips in cash - and eat every one of them. Here is where to find the camp, how the encounter plays out, and what the game's lore actually says about the cult's cannibalism.

Essentials:

  • The Altruist Camp sits in the Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness, west of Mount Chiliad and north of Raton Canyon.
  • Only Trevor Philips can trigger the event; the Altruists are hostile to Michael and Franklin.
  • The cult pays for "lost souls" (random strangers) it picks up around Blaine County, then implies it eats them.
  • After the fourth delivery, the Altruists betray Trevor - triggering a shootout worth up to $100,000 and a free RPG.

Who Are the Altruists?

The Altruist Cult is a fictional doomsday sect introduced in GTA 5's Strangers and Freaks content. According to the game's own lore, its members are elderly technophobes, self-styled alien hunters and anti-ageists who blame every generation after their own for ruining the world. They believe they can reclaim their youth by consuming "young blood" - a premise the game never spells out directly, but strongly implies through dialogue and environmental storytelling.

The mission chain starts with Nervous Ron, a paranoid conspiracy theorist who becomes the Altruists' unwitting middleman. After Trevor finishes Ron's introductory mission, Ron starts texting him with requests: the cult wants "lost souls" and will pay cash for them. That text is the trigger for the whole random event.

Where to Find the Altruist Camp in GTA 5

The camp is deep in the Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness, on a hilltop that sits west of the Great Ocean Highway, south of Paleto Forest and east of Raton Canyon. It is deliberately hard to stumble into - there's no road sign pointing at it, and the surrounding forest is thick enough that most players only find it by following a marker during the random event or hunting for it after reading about the easter egg online.

The compound itself looks like a self-built survivalist settlement: wooden shacks, a water mill, scavenged furniture and tall perimeter walls that block outside view. Cult members in tattered robes (some fully naked, which the game plays for uncomfortable dark comedy) wander the grounds, and the walls are covered in scrawled symbols that fed years of fan theories about a bigger conspiracy - most of which the developers never confirmed.

How the Random Event Works

Once Ron's text arrives, the event plays out like this:

  1. Drive around Blaine County and Los Santos looking for random hitchhikers and lost-looking strangers - the game marks eligible NPCs as pickup targets near Trevor.
  2. Load one into a vehicle and drive them to the Altruist Camp.
  3. Drop them off. The cult pays Trevor in cash on the spot, and the stranger walks into the compound, never to be seen again.
  4. Repeat for a total of four strangers.

Ron's dialogue during these trips is where the game gets most of its dark humor, and also its clearest hint at what is actually happening: he cheerfully admits the cult "just wants them for dinner" and is obsessed with "young blood." Nothing on screen shows an act of cannibalism directly - GTA 5 leaves it as text and subtext, never a cutscene - but the implication is unmistakable once you have delivered a few "lost souls" and watched the cult celebrate each one.

The Betrayal: Trevor's Final Confrontation

After the fourth delivery, the tone flips. The Altruists turn on Trevor: he's ambushed at gunpoint and marched to a cliffside inside the compound, where the cult leader begins some kind of ritual instead of paying attention to their prisoner. That distraction is the opening - Trevor grabs a weapon and turns the tables, fighting his way through the entire camp.

Clearing the camp rewards players with:

  • Four briefcases worth $25,000 each, for a total of $100,000 scattered around the compound.
  • A free RPG, one of the better rocket launchers available in story mode.
  • The satisfaction of wiping out every Altruist, including the cult leader, who never gets a name in the game's credits or dialogue.

It's one of the few random events in GTA 5 that escalates into a full firefight, and it rewards players who follow through on all four deliveries rather than stopping partway.

The Cannibalism Angle, Explained

Rockstar never shows a body being eaten, and the Altruists are never officially labeled "cannibals" in a mission title or a loading-screen tip. Everything players know comes from context: Ron's comments about the cult wanting people "for dinner," the fact that delivered strangers are never seen leaving the compound, and the broader in-universe description of the Altruists as a doomsday cult obsessed with youth and blood. Fan wikis and lore breakdowns treat the cannibalism as effectively confirmed by the writing, even without an on-screen kill.

That ambiguity is deliberate. GTA games routinely use suggestion instead of graphic depiction for their darkest jokes, letting the player's imagination fill the gap - which is exactly what turned the Altruist Camp into one of the most talked-about GTA 5 easter eggs for over a decade.

The Cult's Symbols and Graffiti

Part of what keeps the Altruist Camp in fan discussions is the environmental detail scattered around it: crude murals, painted symbols and scrawled phrases on the walls and rock faces near the compound. None of it has ever been officially explained by Rockstar, and much of it reads as intentionally cryptic set dressing rather than a puzzle with a solution - similar in spirit to the graffiti players have picked apart around Mount Chiliad itself.

Could the Altruist Cult Return in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not confirmed anything about the Altruist Cult returning, and GTA 6's setting in Leonida (a fictionalized Florida) means a like-for-like Blaine County wilderness camp is unlikely. That said, Rockstar has a long history of reusing successful ideas from state to state - a new cult, wrapped around a different regional mythology, would fit the studio's pattern of hiding at least one deeply weird, quotable secret in its open worlds. Until Rockstar shows otherwise, this stays firmly in "we'll see" territory rather than confirmed content.

Take-Two and Rockstar have been protective of leaked GTA 6 material, so treat anything not shown in an official trailer as rumor, not fact.

If you want to keep exploring GTA 5's stranger corners, the Epsilon Program and its Kifflom cult is the game's other deep dive into fictional doomsday belief systems, and Trevor Philips, explained covers why he's the only protagonist the Altruists will even talk to.
