How to Keep a Stolen Car in GTA 6: Garages, Registration and Pay 'n' Spray

Stealing a car in GTA 6 does not make it yours. According to hands-on previews published before the November 19, 2026 launch, keeping a stolen car takes three steps: hide it in a garage you own, get rid of its tracker, then pay to register it. Skip a step and the car stays temporary. Here is what previews from IGN, Edge and TheGamer describe about garages, registration, Pay 'n' Spray and license plates, what carries over from GTA 5, and what Rockstar has not confirmed yet.

The essentials

  • A garage is the first step, not the last. Previews report you can store a stolen car in a garage you bought, but storing it does not make it yours.
  • Registration makes it permanent. The WAINK app on your phone shows each car's registration cost before you even steal it.
  • Trackers block registration. A car with a tracker reportedly has to have it removed first, and tracker removal unlocks through fence work, not from the start.
  • Unregistered cars are temporary. GTABase reports they eventually disappear if you never register them.
  • Pay 'n' Spray is back in some form. Previews describe basic repairs and paint tied to a vehicle's "heat", not a full custom shop.
  • License plates are unconfirmed. Rockstar has not said whether registering a car changes its plate, or whether plates can be swapped.
  • All of this comes from pre-release previews, not from a Rockstar manual. Prices, limits and unlock order can still change at launch.

How do you keep a stolen car in GTA 6?

The short answer: garage, tracker, registration, in that order. The long answer depends on where you are in the story.

Early on, the previews describe a frustrating but deliberate limit. In one demo reported by TheGamer and relayed by GTA BOOM, the player stole a car they wanted to keep and could not, because tracker removal had not been unlocked yet. The car could be stored, but not made legal. That is the design: Rockstar seems to want you to earn the right to keep high-value cars, rather than grabbing a supercar in the first hour and driving it for the whole game.

The good news is that the garage works as a waiting room. GTABase writes that even a valuable car stolen early can sit in your garage until you are able to remove its tracker and register it. So if you find something rare before you can afford it, the move is to park it, not to sell it.

Step 1: get the car to a garage you own

Both Jason and Lucia can own several personal vehicles, and previews say the number depends on your garage space and other ownership requirements. Garages are bought, not given, and the full list of garage locations and prices has not been revealed.

Getting there is the hard part. A stolen car can carry a GPS tracker, and previews describe higher-tier trackers that react to speed: drive fast and they stay quiet, slow down for too long and the car's position is sent to the police, even if nobody saw the theft. That makes the drive to the garage a small mission of its own. If the police do show up, our guide on how to lose the police in GTA 6 covers cameras, witnesses and changing clothes.

How you got in matters too. A smashed window is damage, while a Slim Jim or a key cloner leaves the car intact. Our GTA 6 carjacking guide explains each method and which cars need which tool.

Step 2: remove the tracker

This is the gate that decides whether a car can ever become yours. Previews say tracker removal is a service you unlock by doing work for fences, the receivers of stolen goods who also buy the cars you do not keep.

SituationWhat previews describe
Car has no trackerCan go straight to registration once stored
Car has a tracker, removal not unlockedCan be stored, but not kept for good
Car has a tracker, removal unlockedRemove it, then register

WAINK shows a car's tracker tier before you touch it, so you can tell in advance whether a target is a keeper or a headache. Fences, their signal blockers and how they pay are covered in our guide on how to sell a stolen car in GTA 6.

Step 3: pay the registration

Registration is what turns a stolen car into a personal vehicle. WAINK lists the registration cost next to the resale value, which turns every theft into a simple question: is this car worth more to me on the road or as cash?

Registration prices per model have not been revealed. Expect them to scale with the car's value, since a cheap registration on a supercar would undercut the whole fence economy. Once a car is registered, previews say the Scooter Bros app can deliver it to you for a fee, much like calling the Mechanic in GTA Online.

Pay 'n' Spray in GTA 6: what previews say

Pay 'n' Spray is one of the oldest names in the series. In GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas, driving into one fixed your car, changed its color and cleared your wanted level for a fee. GTA 5 dropped the brand and folded resprays into Los Santos Customs.

For GTA 6, previews report the name is back, with a narrower role:

  • Basic repairs and colors, not the full catalog of a mod shop.
  • Tied to vehicle heat. TheGamer describes Pay 'n' Spray as a way to deal with a vehicle's heat, the trace a car carries after it has been seen in a crime.
  • Useful before a sale. IGN reports that repairing a stolen car before selling it helps protect its price at a fence.
  • Access depends on progression, according to GTA BOOM's summary, which links it to fence work and the story.

What is not confirmed: whether a respray clears a wanted level outright like in the 3D era games, how much it costs, and whether repainting a stolen car changes how the police recognize it. Treat the "instant escape" version of Pay 'n' Spray as something to verify on launch day, not a given.

For deeper customization, Rockstar has named two mod shops, Rideout Customs and One-Eyed Willie's. Both are tied to the Ultimate Edition, as explained in our GTA 6 vehicle customization guide.

License plates: what we know (and do not)

Nothing official yet. Rockstar's trailers show cars driving around Leonida, but no preview has described a plate swap, a fake plate or a plate tied to registration.

What we can say is what GTA 5 and GTA Online did, since GTA 6 often builds on them:

  • GTA 5 story mode let you pick plate styles and custom plate text at Los Santos Customs.
  • GTA Online required buying a tracker and insurance at Los Santos Customs before you could store a street car, and refused to modify cars it judged too valuable to be a "street" car.
  • Neither game used plates as part of the police search.

In GTA 6, where a tracker can report a theft on its own and vehicles carry heat, a plate change would be a logical tool. It is still speculation until the game is out.

What happens if the police take your car?

Previews reported by TheGamer describe a new twist on the impound. If the police recognize an abandoned personal vehicle, they may wait nearby before impounding it, which means you can sometimes sneak back and drive off first. Once a car is impounded, you can pay to get it back or steal it back. GTA 5 already had a paid impound lot; our GTA 5 impound guide explains how it worked there.

In GTA 5 story mode, parking a stolen car in a garage was enough to keep it, which is why so many players filled Franklin's garage on day one. GTA 6 turns that into a progression. Our GTA 5 garages guide lists how much each property held for comparison.

Tips for your first keeper

  • Scan before you steal. WAINK shows the tracker tier and registration cost up front.
  • Start with cars without trackers. They are the only ones you can likely keep before fence work unlocks tracker removal.
  • Park the rare ones. If you cannot register a car yet, store it rather than sell it.
  • Use a Slim Jim when you can. Less damage means less to repair, whether you keep or sell.
  • Do fence work early. It reportedly unlocks tracker removal, and with it most of the cars worth keeping.

What we still do not know

Garage locations and prices, registration costs per model, how many cars each character can own, whether Pay 'n' Spray clears wanted levels, and whether plates matter at all are all unconfirmed. We will update this guide with real numbers once GTA 6 is out on November 19, 2026.
