How to Sell a Stolen Car in GTA 6: WAINK, Fences and Trackers Explained
WAINK shows a car's resale value before you steal it, fences pay less for damage, and trackers can call the police on their own. Here is how selling stolen cars should work in GTA 6, based on the IGN and Edge previews.
Stealing a car in GTA 6 is only half the job. The other half is turning it into money, or into a car you can actually keep. Hands-on previews from IGN (August 27, 2026) and Edge magazine (October 29, 2026) describe a full chain behind every theft: the WAINK app on your phone tells you what a car is worth before you touch it, fences buy what you bring in, and GPS trackers can quietly report you to the police on the way there. Here is how selling a stolen car is expected to work at launch on November 19, 2026, what is reported, and what is still unknown.
The essentials
- WAINK scans before you steal. The phone app shows a car's security level, the tool you need, its tracker, its resale value and its registration cost.
- Fences buy stolen cars. Edge reports that WAINK lists the models fences want, and IGN reports that fences pay less for a damaged car.
- Trackers are the real threat. Previews describe trackers that react to speed and can send your position to the police even when nobody saw the theft.
- Tracker removal is not available from the start. It reportedly unlocks through fence work as you progress.
- You can keep a car instead. Store it in a garage you own, then pay the registration cost shown in WAINK to make it yours.
- Everything here comes from pre-release previews, not a Rockstar manual. Prices and limits can still change.
Step 1: scan the car with WAINK
WAINK is the car-theft app on Jason and Lucia's phone, first spotted in Rockstar's official footage and described in more detail by the press after hands-on sessions. Point it at a parked car and it returns a readout. According to preview coverage relayed by GTA BOOM, that readout includes:
| WAINK field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Security level | How hard the car is to get into |
| Required tool | Slim Jim, key cloner, or other equipment |
| Tracker tier | Whether a GPS tracker is fitted, and how aggressive it is |
| Resale value | What a fence should pay for it |
| Registration cost | What it costs to make the car legally yours |
Edge adds one more detail that matters for this guide: WAINK also lists the models fences are looking for, along with their security and tracking features. In other words, the app is not just a scanner, it is a shopping list.
One warning from IGN's preview: the value WAINK shows is an estimate, not a guaranteed payout. What you actually get depends on the state the car arrives in. We covered the rest of the phone, including Snapmatic and texting, in our GTA 6 phone and WAINK guide.
Step 2: get in and get it started
Once you have picked a target, you still have to take it. GTA 6 drops the one-button theft for parked cars. Rockstar's official footage shows two choices on a locked car: smash the window (fast, loud) or use a Slim Jim (quiet, with a short minigame). Previews add that some modern cars need a key cloner, and that getting inside does not always mean the engine starts.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has said some parked cars stay inaccessible early in the story until you acquire the right tools, while any driver can still be pulled out of a moving car the classic way. Our GTA 6 carjacking guide breaks down each tool.
For a sale, the method matters. A smashed window is damage, and damage is exactly what fences pay less for.
Step 3: deal with the tracker
This is where GTA 6 differs most from earlier games. In GTA 5, a stolen car was only a problem if someone saw you take it. In GTA 6, previews describe trackers that work on their own:
- Higher-tier trackers react to speed. Driving fast keeps them quiet; slowing down makes them beep. Stay slow for too long and the car's position is sent to the police.
- A tracker can report the theft even with no witness. A clean, quiet Slim Jim entry does not protect you if the car itself calls it in.
- Fences reportedly have a signal blocker at the drop-off, according to Edge's preview, but that only helps once you arrive. It does not cover the drive.
That creates an interesting tension. A tracker wants you to keep moving fast, while a damaged car sells for less. Driving at high speed through traffic to keep a tracker quiet is the easiest way to scratch the paint you are trying to sell.
If the tracker does call it in, the usual rules of the new wanted system apply. Our guide on how to lose the police in GTA 6 covers cameras, witnesses and changing clothes.
Step 4: deliver it to a fence
Fences are the receivers of stolen goods in GTA 6, and previews describe them as more than a drop-off point. According to the reports gathered by GTA BOOM:
- Condition affects the price. A damaged car sells for less than an intact one (IGN).
- Repairing before selling protects the value. IGN reports that fixing a stolen car before you sell it helps keep its price up. Pay'n'Spray is mentioned in previews for basic repairs and paint, linked to a vehicle's "heat".
- Fences hand out leads. IGN describes a fence supplying the access code to a police impound full of cars that can be stolen and sold.
- Fence work unlocks services. Equipment and services, including tracker removal, become available as you do more work for fences.
Some outlets describe this network as "chop shops", a term GTA Online players will know from the December 2023 Chop Shop update. Rockstar has not published an official name for every location, so treat "fence" as the reliable word for now. Exact fence locations, prices and any daily limit have not been revealed.
Sell it or keep it?
WAINK shows both numbers side by side for a reason: every stolen car is a choice between quick cash and a permanent ride.
| Sell to a fence | Keep and register | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Cash, minus any damage | A car that is legally yours |
| What it costs | Nothing up front | The registration cost shown in WAINK |
| Tracker | Signal blocker at the drop-off | Reportedly needs tracker removal first |
| Where it goes | Gone for good | Your garage |
| Best for | Common cars, early-game money | Rare or fast cars you want to drive |
Previews report that you can buy a garage, park a stolen car there and register it later once you can afford it. Storing a car does not make it yours, though. In one demo, a stolen car could not be kept yet because the player had not done enough fence work to unlock tracker removal. According to GTABase's summary, unregistered cars are temporary.
Once a car is yours, the Scooter Bros delivery app can bring it to you for a fee, and its trunk becomes your armory. That is one more reason not to keep a car with an active tracker.
How it compares to GTA 5 and GTA Online
Selling stolen cars is not new to the series, but it has never been this layered.
| GTA 5 story mode | GTA Online | GTA 6 (previews) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you sell | Simeon's export missions only | Los Santos Customs | Fences |
| Value check before theft | None | None | WAINK readout |
| Trackers | None on street cars | On your own insured cars | On stolen cars, can alert police |
| Condition and price | Not relevant | Repairs before selling | Damage lowers the fence price |
| Limits | Story-driven | One street car sale per in-game day | Not yet revealed |
GTA Online's Los Santos Customs famously capped street car sales to one every 48 real minutes and paid modest sums, which pushed players toward Import/Export for real money. GTA 6 appears to be building car theft into a progression of its own, closer to a business than a side hustle. Where it fits among other money-makers is covered in our guide to making money fast in GTA 6.
Tips for your first stolen car sale
Based on what previews describe, a few habits should pay off from day one:
- Scan everything. WAINK costs nothing to use and tells you if a target is worth it before you commit.
- Prefer cars without trackers early. A modest car with no tracker is a safer sale than an expensive one that reports your position.
- Use the Slim Jim when you can. A smashed window is damage you will pay for at the fence.
- Drive clean, not just fast. Keep the tracker quiet without wrapping the car around a lamppost.
- Repair before you sell if a cheap repair keeps the value up.
- Do fence work. It is reportedly how you unlock tracker removal, and with it the option to keep the cars you like.
What we still don't know
Rockstar has not published a dedicated feature on car selling. The fence prices, the number of fence locations, whether there is a cooldown between sales, how much registration costs per model and whether GTA 6 Online will use the same system are all unconfirmed. Our Edge preview breakdown gathers everything else revealed in the latest hands-on.
We will update this guide with real prices and fence locations once the game is out. Until then, treat every figure you see online, including ours, as a preview, not a promise.
