GTA 6 Hunting and Selling Pelts: What Rockstar Has Actually Confirmed

Hunting and selling animal pelts is one of the most requested GTA 6 features, but Rockstar has not announced it. Here is what the trailers and screenshots really show, and what Red Dead Redemption 2 suggests.

GTA 6 Hunting and Selling Pelts: What Rockstar Has Actually Confirmed

Few features spark as much speculation as hunting. After Red Dead Redemption 2, many players want to track an animal through the woods in Leonida, skin it and sell the pelt for cash. The short version: Rockstar has not announced a pelt-selling system for GTA 6. What exists is a set of official screenshots and trailer frames that make hunting plausible, plus a studio track record that makes it tempting to fill in the blanks. This guide separates what is shown from what is only expected.

Everything below comes from Rockstar's two official trailers and the screenshots it released. There are no leaks and no datamined material here, and every mechanic described as "expected" is a hypothesis, not a promise. GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026, and until then the honest label for any hunting system is "unconfirmed".

The essentials

  • Rockstar has not officially announced hunting, animal skinning or pelt selling for GTA 6.
  • Official screenshots of the wilderness around Mount Kalaga show deer, alligators and a cougar stalking prey, which hints at a living ecosystem.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 is the obvious template: tracking, clean kills, quality ratings and selling to a butcher or trader.
  • Anything about prices, animal quality or a pelt economy is speculation until Rockstar shows gameplay.
  • Treat any video or website claiming "confirmed hunting mechanics" with suspicion, especially if it offers a download or an early access link.

What Rockstar has actually shown

The strongest evidence is visual. Among the official screenshots, a sequence set in the Mount Kalaga area shows a cougar stalking a group of deer, an alligator in marshland, and tall pine woods that look very different from Vice City's beaches. Another set shows outdoor activities such as kayaking and dirt biking in the same region. You can find the broader picture in our list of confirmed activities from the trailers.

What this tells us:

  1. Wild animals exist outside the city. Predator and prey behaviour in a screenshot suggests animals have their own routines rather than being decoration.
  2. The terrain is built for stalking. Woods, water edges and open clearings give cover and sight lines, the same ingredients that made hunting work in Rockstar's western.
  3. Hunting is a natural fit for the setting. Florida has a strong hunting and fishing culture, and Rockstar's satire of that culture is easy to imagine.

What it does not tell us: whether you can actually shoot those deer, whether you can skin them, whether a trader will buy the result, or whether any of it is tied to progression. A screenshot of an animal is not a mechanic.

Which animals could be huntable?

Our dedicated page on every animal spotted in the GTA 6 trailers lists the sightings. For hunting purposes, the interesting ones are:

  • Deer. Shown in the Mount Kalaga screenshots and the most obvious candidate for a first hunt.
  • Alligators. Seen in backyards, pools and marshes. They are iconic for Florida, and a dangerous target would fit Rockstar's taste for risk.
  • Cougars and other predators. A cougar appears in the wilderness shots. Whether it is a threat, a prize or just scenery is unknown.
  • Birds and wading animals. Flamingos, pelicans and herons are plentiful on screen, but a bird shot in a real-world Florida context would raise legal and tonal questions for any studio.

Some fan sites already publish long animal rosters with exact numbers. Rockstar has not released an official wildlife list, so treat any precise species count as unofficial.

How RDR2 handled it, and why that matters

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the reference point because it is Rockstar's most detailed hunting system. The loop worked like this:

  1. Spot tracks or an animal using your senses.
  2. Choose the right weapon so the animal dies cleanly and the pelt keeps its quality.
  3. Skin it and carry the carcass or pelt on your horse.
  4. Sell it to a butcher or trader, and sometimes use the materials for crafting.

A hunting system in GTA 6 would not need to copy this, and it probably would not. The game is modern, set in a crowded state, and built around different tools. But the same ingredients are plausible: wildlife with behaviour, a clear reward for a clean kill, and a way to turn a successful hunt into money or progression. If you want a refresher on the older approach, our GTA 5 hunting guide shows how much simpler the GTA series version was.

Could you really sell pelts in GTA 6?

This is the heart of the question, and the honest answer is that nobody outside Rockstar knows. Here are the scenarios, ranked by how well they match what we have seen:

  • Hunting as a leisure activity with light rewards. Most likely, in our view. Think a challenge, a photo, a trophy or a small payout rather than a full economy.
  • A pelt and meat economy similar to RDR2. Possible, but it would need traders, prices and quality ratings, none of which have been shown.
  • No selling at all. Entirely possible. Animals may exist for atmosphere, danger and a few side objectives.

Money in GTA 6 will matter, so it is fair to wonder where hunting would fit. Our guide to making money fast in GTA 6 covers the sources that look most solid so far. Until Rockstar shows a trader or a shop buying animal goods, hunting should not be part of your plan for early cash.

What to expect from the tools

Another open question is equipment. In RDR2 you used bows, rifles and special ammunition. In GTA 6 you might hunt with an ordinary rifle or a dedicated weapon, and the way the game handles pickups and loot will shape whether carcasses can be looted at all. Our explainer on weapon pickups and looting shows what is known about the looting system, and it is a useful proxy for how carcasses might work.

Weapon choice might also affect how animals react. A loud shot could scatter a herd, and a suppressed one might not. That is speculation drawn from how Rockstar handled noise in earlier games, not from anything in the trailers.

Rockstar's likely guardrails

Rockstar tends to keep wildlife violence stylised and tied to a clear gameplay purpose. If hunting appears, expect:

  • Rules tied to location. Hunting grounds and parks may be the only places where it is allowed, and breaking the rules could raise your wanted level.
  • Consequences for the wrong animals. Protected species, pets and endangered animals could be off limits or carry a penalty.
  • A clear reason to do it. A reward, a challenge or a story hook, not just an open sandbox.

Again, these are expectations drawn from how Rockstar designed RDR2, not from any announcement.

How to follow future announcements

When Rockstar releases new trailers or screenshots, look for these signals that hunting is real:

  1. A character holding a rifle in a forest, with an animal in sight.
  2. A prompt or interface showing an animal quality rating or a skinning option.
  3. A shop, butcher or trader in the background with animal goods on display.
  4. A mention in the official website text or a press preview.

Until one of those appears, "GTA 6 hunting" is a well-founded hope rather than a feature. It is also worth bookmarking our map of Leonida regions so you can see where the wilderness sits compared with the big cities.

FAQ

Is hunting confirmed in GTA 6? Not officially. Rockstar has shown screenshots of wild animals and outdoor activities in the Mount Kalaga area, but it has not announced a hunting feature.

Can you sell animal pelts in GTA 6? Unknown. A pelt economy like Red Dead Redemption 2 is possible, but nothing shown so far proves it.

Where would hunting take place? The wilderness around Mount Kalaga is the most likely location based on official screenshots.

Will hunting be a good way to make money? There is no evidence yet. Plan for other income sources until Rockstar shows prices and traders.

Should I trust sites that list exact hunting mechanics? No. Anything beyond the official screenshots and trailers is speculation, however confident the wording.

Bottom line

GTA 6 hunting and pelt selling is a reasonable expectation, not a confirmed feature. The official wilderness screenshots, the predator and prey shots and Rockstar's own history with Red Dead Redemption 2 all point in that direction, but the studio has not described any mechanic. When new footage arrives, we will update this guide with whatever is actually shown.
