GTA 6 Load Times: What the Extended Look Shows About Near-Instant Loading

PlayStation promises near-instant load times for GTA 6 on PS5. Here is what the Extended Look actually shows, what it does not prove, and what to expect.

GTA 6 Load Times: What the Extended Look Shows About Near-Instant Loading

GTA 6 is a huge open world, and the question many players ask is simple: will we spend the launch weekend staring at loading screens? Based on what PlayStation has said and what the Extended Look footage shows, the answer looks encouraging, but it is not a guarantee. This guide separates what is stated from what is only suggested, because with GTA 6 everything beyond the official trailers and platform statements remains an expectation.

What PlayStation has actually said

The clearest statement comes from PlayStation itself. In its announcement for the game, the PlayStation Blog wrote that Grand Theft Auto VI "leverages the PS5's ultra-high speed SSD, enabling you to experience the expansive world of Leonida with near-instant load times."

That wording matters. "Near-instant" is not "zero". As Screen Rant noted, the blog does not specifically promise that loading screens will be completely absent. If one appears, it should be extremely brief. Rockstar has not published a technical document that gives load times in seconds, so treat any exact figure you see online as a guess.

What the Extended Look shows

The Extended Look gave the first sustained stretch of footage in which we can watch the game move between situations. Several moments are relevant to loading:

  • Cutscene to gameplay. The action moves from scripted scenes into player control with very little visible interruption. The small stutter that usually marks this kind of handoff is barely noticeable, and in some places absent.
  • Unbroken opening. The early minutes read as one continuous flow rather than a chain of cuts hiding a loading bar.
  • Switching between the two leads. When Lucia and Jason are in different places, the camera pulls out, shoots across the map to the other character and drops back in. According to SVG's breakdown, this takes roughly 5 to 6 seconds, comparable to how GTA 5 handled character swaps. When both are in the same car, the swap takes only a second or two.

If you want the full picture of how switching might work, see our guide to character switching between Jason and Lucia.

Why the SSD matters so much

Older consoles read data from a spinning hard drive. A game world has to be streamed in as you move, and a slow drive forces the developer to hide that work: long elevator rides, narrow corridors, black screens. A fast SSD removes most of that constraint. Textures, geometry and audio for the area around you can be loaded in the background, and a new area can be loaded in a fraction of a second.

For a game built around Leonida, with dense cities, swamps, beaches and interiors, that is the difference between a world that feels connected and one that feels cut into zones. We cover the geography in our map guide.

What "no loading screens" probably does and does not mean

It is worth being precise about the realistic expectations.

You may still see a loading moment at some points. Starting the game from the main menu, loading a save, fast traveling if the game offers it, or entering a different online session are all situations where a wait is normal. Near-instant does not mean these vanish.

Interiors are the real test. The open street is the easy case because the game can stream it continuously. Entering buildings is where many games cut to a short transition. Rockstar has shown interiors in its footage, but we have not seen enough to say how every door behaves.

First launch includes a heavier cost. The first boot after installing, and any shader or data preparation, can take longer than later sessions. Check our file size and storage estimate and the preload guide so the install is ready before launch day.

Caveats about the footage itself

The Extended Look is a curated presentation. It was carefully edited, so it shows Rockstar's best moments, not an average session on an average console. Reports also indicate it ran at 30 frames per second on a base PS5, not a PS5 Pro, which suggests the team is either being cautious or still optimizing. Our breakdown of graphics modes and frame rates goes deeper into that part.

There is also a point about different hardware. The "near-instant" claim was written for the PS5's SSD. Loading behavior on Xbox Series X and S, and on a future PC version, has not been spelled out by Rockstar in the same way. A console with slower storage or less memory, such as the Series S, could behave differently, which is why we look at what to expect on Xbox Series S separately.

How to be ready on launch day

You cannot control Rockstar's engine, but you can control your setup:

  1. Free internal SSD space. Keep comfortable room beyond the install size so the console does not shuffle data around.
  2. Install on internal storage. A fast internal drive is the safest choice for a game that streams a lot of data.
  3. Preload as soon as it is available. That keeps the first session from being slowed by an unfinished install.
  4. Update your console system software. Platform updates sometimes improve storage handling.

Our pre-launch checklist for PS5 and Xbox walks through these steps, and the comparison of PS5 versus PS5 Pro helps if you are deciding on hardware.

What we will be watching for

Between now and launch, a few things would turn expectation into fact:

  • Reviews and hands-on previews that time how long a load or a swap really takes.
  • Rockstar technical notes about streaming and storage.
  • Footage of interiors, vehicle entry and fast transitions in normal play.
  • Any difference between platforms.

Until then, the safe reading is this: PlayStation has stated near-instant load times on PS5, the Extended Look shows short and smooth transitions, and the rest is reasonable expectation based on how GTA 5 handled the same problem. For the broader recap of what the footage revealed, read our Extended Look recap.

Quick summary

  • Stated: PlayStation says near-instant load times on PS5 thanks to the SSD.
  • Shown: smooth cutscene to gameplay handoffs, 1 to 2 seconds for a same-car swap, about 5 to 6 seconds for a cross-map swap.
  • Not proven: a total absence of loading, interior behavior, and results on other platforms.
  • Our advice: install on fast internal storage, preload, and wait for independent testing before treating "no loading" as a promise.

Everything here is based on official statements and published trailers, and it will be updated when Rockstar shares more.
