GTA 6 File Size: How Much Space to Free on PS5 and Xbox Before Pre-Load

Short answer: free 250 GB. As of October 27, 2026, Rockstar has still not published an official file size for Grand Theft Auto VI, and neither the PlayStation Store nor the Microsoft Store lists one. What is confirmed is the date you will find out: pre-loading opens on November 12, 2026, a week before the November 19 launch, and the exact download size shows up in your console's queue the moment it starts. Until then, the realistic planning figure is a 150-200 GB install plus a day-one patch, so 250 GB of free space covers every likely case.

The essentials

• Official file size: not announced as of October 27, 2026.
• Pre-load: opens November 12, 2026 for digital pre-orders, per Rockstar's own pre-order announcement. Rockstar has not given an hour.
• Physical copies: the box holds a download code, not a disc, and goes on sale on November 12 so boxed buyers can pre-load too. Everyone downloads the same files.
• Our estimate: 150-200 GB for the game, plus a day-one patch that could add tens of gigabytes.
• Space to free: 250 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X; on Xbox Series S, as much as you can, because its usable storage is only about 364 GB.
• Ignore the viral 677 GB screenshot. It is bigger than a launch PS5's entire usable drive.

When will we know the exact GTA 6 file size?

On November 12 at the latest. Rockstar's pre-order announcement of June 24, 2026 says players who pre-order digitally "will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12 to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19." Once your console starts that download, the store and the download queue show the real size, so there is no guessing left from that point.

How much space should you free on each console?

Usable storage is what the system leaves you after its own files, as reported by Sony and Microsoft's own storage screens. Your real free space is lower if other games and captures are installed.

Why 150-200 GB is the realistic estimate

Rockstar's last two open worlds set the baseline, and every one of its releases has landed bigger than the one before.

GTA 6 adds four things that push it past Red Dead Redemption 2:

• Two full protagonists. Jason and Lucia each carry their own cutscenes, dialogue and animation sets.
• A dense map. Leonida is built around detailed interiors and crowded streets, which weigh far more than empty terrain.
• Current-gen only assets. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version holding texture resolution back.
• More music and voice than ever. Rockstar calls it its biggest selection of in-game radio yet, and audio is one of the heaviest parts of any open world.

Put RDR2's 105-150 GB next to the generational jump Rockstar makes every time, and 150-200 GB is the most defensible range. Treat it as planning guidance, not a Rockstar figure.

The day-one patch: why the margin matters

Big console releases routinely ship a patch on launch day to fix what was found after the game was finalized. Its size for GTA 6 is unknown, but it lands on top of the pre-load, and a patch also needs temporary room to install. That is the whole reason to aim for 250 GB rather than 200: a console that runs out of space mid-update on November 19 is the most avoidable launch-day problem there is.

Xbox Series S: the console to worry about

With about 364 GB of usable storage, a 200 GB install would take more than half of a Series S on its own. Xbox games are often smaller on Series S because they ship lower-resolution assets for it, so the Series S download may come in below the Series X one, but Microsoft has not published anything for GTA 6 and you should not count on it. If you play on Series S:

• uninstall everything you are not actively playing this month;
• move older games to a USB drive (they can be stored there and copied back later, but Series X|S games cannot be played from a USB hard drive);
• consider a Storage Expansion Card if you want GTA 6 and other big games installed at the same time.

How to make room now

• Delete what you are not playing. Digital games stay on your account and re-download for free.
• Use extended storage for parking, not playing. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S games can be kept on a USB drive to save re-downloading, but must be moved back to internal storage (or a supported expansion) to run.
• Expand properly if you need to. PS5 takes compatible M.2 NVMe SSDs in its expansion slot; Xbox Series X|S takes official Storage Expansion Cards.

A physical copy will not save you space

The physical GTA 6 edition ships without a disc: the box contains a download code. Boxed and digital players install exactly the same files, so there is no smaller disc install to fall back on.
