PS Plus or Game Pass Essential for GTA 6? What You Actually Need to Play Online
GTA 6's story mode needs no subscription on PS5 or Xbox. Online play will almost certainly require PS Plus Essential or Game Pass Essential (the old Game Pass Core). Prices, differences and which one to pick.

You do not need PS Plus or Game Pass to play GTA 6. The story mode, Jason and Lucia's run through Leonida, works on a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S without any subscription. A paid membership only becomes necessary the day Rockstar switches on an online multiplayer mode, and Rockstar has not said when that will be. So the real question is not "which one do I need on November 19" but "which one will I need later, and how much will it cost me". Here is the short, honest answer, with the current prices in the US.
The essentials:
- Single-player GTA 6 needs no subscription on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Buy the game, play the story.
- Online multiplayer will almost certainly require one: PlayStation Plus Essential on PS5, Xbox Game Pass Essential on Xbox. That is how GTA Online works today on both consoles.
- Game Pass Core no longer exists. Microsoft renamed it Game Pass Essential in October 2025. If you see "Core" in an old guide, read "Essential".
- Current US prices: PS Plus Essential is $10.99 a month for new subscribers (since May 20, 2026), $27.99 for three months, $79.99 for a year. Game Pass Essential is $9.99 a month.
- GTA 6 itself is not in either catalog. Take-Two has ruled out a day-one release on PS Plus or Game Pass. Neither subscription gives you the game.
- GTA+ is a different thing. It is Rockstar's own membership, it does not unlock online play on its own.
Do you need a subscription to play GTA 6?
Not to play the game Rockstar is actually shipping on November 19. Every official description so far, from the pre-order pages to the PlayStation Store listing, frames GTA 6 as a single-player experience. Single-player games on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have never required PS Plus or Game Pass, and nothing suggests GTA 6 will be the exception.
What is not confirmed is the multiplayer side. As we covered in our explainer on GTA 6 multiplayer at launch, Rockstar has not announced an online mode for day one. History points to a staggered rollout: GTA 5 came out on September 17, 2013, and GTA Online followed on October 1. Red Dead Online arrived about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. If GTA 6 follows that pattern, you could spend your first weeks with the game without needing any subscription at all.
There is one nuance worth knowing. A subscription is about online multiplayer, not about being connected to the internet. Downloading the day-one patch, syncing trophies or achievements, or using cloud saves does not require PS Plus or Game Pass. Cloud save storage is a PS Plus perk on PlayStation, but local saves work fine without it.
Will GTA 6 online require PS Plus or Game Pass?
This is an expectation based on how both consoles work, not something Rockstar has confirmed for GTA 6. But the precedent is strong:
- On PS5, Sony requires a PlayStation Plus membership for online multiplayer in paid games. GTA Online on PS5 requires PS Plus, and has since it launched on the console in March 2022.
- On Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft requires Game Pass Essential (or a higher tier) for online multiplayer in paid games. Since 2021 Microsoft has exempted free-to-play games, but GTA Online on Xbox has never been free-to-play, and GTA 6 is a paid game.
The only scenario where GTA 6's online mode would escape this rule is if Rockstar spun it off as a separate free-to-play title. Nothing official points to that, and Take-Two has every reason to keep online tied to the full game. Plan as if you will need a membership the day multiplayer goes live.
PS Plus Essential vs Game Pass Essential: the comparison
Your console decides for you: PS Plus only works on PlayStation, Game Pass Essential only on Xbox (and PC). Still, it helps to know what you get for the money, especially if you have not bought your console yet.
| PS Plus Essential (PS5) | Game Pass Essential (Xbox) | |
|---|---|---|
| Online multiplayer | Yes | Yes |
| Price per month (US) | $10.99 (new subscribers) | $9.99 |
| Price for 3 months (US) | $27.99 | Not sold as a plan by Microsoft |
| Price for 12 months (US) | $79.99 | Not sold as a plan by Microsoft |
| Games included | Monthly games to claim | 50+ game catalog (console, PC, cloud) |
| Cloud saves | Yes | Free on Xbox for everyone |
| GTA 6 included | No | No |
Prices were checked in early November 2026. Sony raised the monthly and quarterly price of Essential for new subscribers on May 20, 2026; existing subscribers kept their old rate as long as the membership stays active.
The takeaway: per month, Game Pass Essential is a dollar cheaper. Over a year, PS Plus Essential's 12-month plan wins easily, at roughly $6.67 a month. If you know you will play GTA 6 online for months, the annual PS Plus plan is the cheapest way in on either console.
Which one should you pick?
You already own a PS5. Take PS Plus Essential, and wait for Rockstar to announce the online date before paying. When it does, the 12-month plan is the best value if you plan to stick around. If you only want to try the online mode for a few weeks, the monthly plan avoids locking yourself in.
You already own an Xbox Series X|S. Take Game Pass Essential at $9.99 a month. If you also want a big catalog of other games, Game Pass Premium or Ultimate cover online play too, but none of them will include GTA 6 at launch, so do not upgrade for that reason.
You have not bought a console yet. Do not let the subscription decide. The difference is a few dollars a year. What matters more is which friends you will play with: our guide to GTA 6 crossplay between PS5 and Xbox explains why you should not count on mixing both platforms in the same session.
You only care about the story. Do not subscribe at all. Keep your money until Rockstar confirms an online mode and a date.
Do not confuse PS Plus, Game Pass and GTA+
Three subscriptions, three different jobs:
- PS Plus Essential / Game Pass Essential unlock online multiplayer on the console. That is the only thing you need for GTA 6 online.
- PS Plus Extra, Premium and Game Pass Ultimate add a catalog of games on top. As we explain in whether GTA 6 will be on PS Plus or Game Pass at launch, Take-Two has said day-one subscription releases for its big games do not make economic sense. GTA 5 only joined these catalogs years after launch.
- GTA+ is Rockstar's own membership. It gives in-game perks and money in GTA Online, but it does not replace PS Plus or Game Pass: on console you still need the platform subscription to play online. If you pre-ordered on certain stores, watch out for the free GTA+ month that renews automatically.
How to save money on your subscription
- Wait for the announcement. There is no point paying for online play before an online mode exists. Subscribing on November 19 "just in case" could mean paying for weeks you will not use.
- Go annual on PlayStation. The 12-month PS Plus Essential plan costs less than eight monthly payments.
- Watch the sales. Sony regularly discounts 12-month PS Plus memberships during its big promotions, and retailers sell prepaid codes below list price.
- Check auto-renew. Both Sony and Microsoft renew memberships automatically. Turn it off in your account settings if you only want one month.
- Keep an existing membership active. On PS Plus, a lapsed membership comes back at the new price. If you are already subscribed at the old rate, letting it expire costs you.
What we still do not know
Rockstar has not announced the GTA 6 online mode, its release date, or whether it will be bundled with the main game or sold separately. It has also not confirmed whether your GTA Online money and characters will carry over. Every part of this guide that concerns online play is based on how PS5 and Xbox work today and on Rockstar's past launches, not on an official GTA 6 announcement. We will update this page as soon as Rockstar confirms how online works.
FAQ

Is Game Pass Core still available? No. Microsoft replaced it with Game Pass Essential in October 2025. Former Core subscribers were moved over automatically, and Essential still includes online multiplayer.
Will GTA 6 be free with PS Plus Extra or Game Pass Ultimate? Not at launch. Take-Two has repeatedly ruled out day-one subscription releases for its biggest games.
Do I need PS Plus to play GTA Online on PS5 today? Yes. GTA Online on PS5 requires a PlayStation Plus membership, which is the best indicator of how GTA 6's online mode is likely to work.
Does GTA+ replace PS Plus or Game Pass? No. GTA+ is a Rockstar membership with in-game bonuses. Playing online on console still requires the platform's own subscription.
