GTA Online Career Builder Guide: Which Criminal Career Should You Choose?

The GTA Online Career Builder is the fastest way to start a criminal empire on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Enhanced). Create a new character, or overwrite an existing one, and Rockstar hands you GTA$4,000,000 to bankroll one of four business paths: Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker. You only get this offer once, so the choice matters more than it looks.

Essentials:

  • Available only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Enhanced) versions of GTA Online, at character creation or when you overwrite a slot.
  • You receive GTA$4,000,000, but you must commit at least GTA$3,000,000 of it to properties, vehicles and weapons before you can continue.
  • You carry a maximum of GTA$1,000,000 with you into freemode once your purchases are locked in.
  • Pick one of four criminal careers: Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker. Each hands you a different starter business.
  • The Career Builder can only be used once per character. Deleting that character afterward does not give you a second run.

What Is the GTA Online Career Builder?

The Career Builder is a guided character setup that replaced the old "start from zero" experience on next-gen and PC Enhanced. Instead of grinding for your first apartment, you walk through a short questionnaire, pick a criminal path, and land in Los Santos already running a business. It exists because Rockstar wants new players (and returning players making a fresh character) to reach the "real" GTA Online economy - CEO work, bunkers, nightclubs, MC businesses - in minutes instead of hours.

It is not available if you keep an existing character from the last-gen or base PC version; it only triggers on a genuinely new or overwritten character on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC Enhanced.

How the GTA$4,000,000 Starting Budget Actually Works

The number that gets people excited is GTA$4,000,000, but you never actually walk into freemode with that much cash. The Career Builder forces you to spend it first:

  1. You choose a career path, which comes with a starter property already selected (an office, a bunker, a nightclub or an MC clubhouse).
  2. You are then walked through a shopping list tied to that business: warehouse or bunker upgrades, a personal vehicle, weapons, and sometimes a second small purchase.
  3. You must spend at least GTA$3,000,000 of the GTA$4,000,000 across these choices. You cannot skip ahead with the full amount in your pocket.
  4. Whatever you have not spent above the GTA$1,000,000 mark is capped there: the most you can carry into freemode from this initial budget is GTA$1,000,000.

In practice this means your real decision is not "which career gives me the most starting cash" (they all give the same GTA$4,000,000), it is "which shopping list gets me a business I can actually run profitably from day one."

The Four Criminal Career Paths, Compared

GunrunnerBunkerManufacturing and selling weaponsPlayers chasing the strongest long-term profit ceiling
Nightclub OwnerNightclubPassive warehouse income from other businessesPlayers who already understand the business web
BikerMC ClubhouseCocaine, meth, counterfeit cash and morePlayers with a crew for fast, repeatable deliveries

Executive: The CEO Office

You start as a SecuroServ CEO with an office in Maze Bank West and a Special Cargo warehouse. You source crates on the map, store them, then sell for a payout that scales with how many you deliver in one run. It is the most "GTA Online business owner" experience the game offers, and the one most guides point new players toward because the loop (source, store, sell, repeat) is simple to learn. Full setup and buy list are covered in our Executive Office guide.

Gunrunner: The Bunker

You get a fully equipped Bunker with core upgrades already installed, producing and selling illegal weapons. Once you invest further, it unlocks the strongest per-hour profit of any Career Builder starter business, and it is the foundation most players eventually build a Mk II weapon unlock on top of. The tradeoff is a slower first hour: upgrades and staff cost more, so it takes longer to feel like you are making real money. See our full Bunker and Gunrunning guide for supply routes and sell missions.

Nightclub Owner

You start with a Nightclub, storage space and a small staff. On paper it is a passive income hub, but that only holds true once you also own the businesses that feed it (Bunker, MC businesses, cargo warehouses). Picked as your very first and only business, it is the weakest Career Builder option, because the warehouse sits mostly empty with nothing supplying it. It becomes excellent later, which is why our Nightclub guide is worth bookmarking for when you expand.

Biker: The MC President

You take over as President of a Motorcycle Club, running product (cocaine, meth, counterfeit cash and more) through a clubhouse business. It can produce a fast first million if you have friends helping with sourcing and sell runs, since MC businesses lean on multiple people working supplies at once. Solo, the constant sourcing and delivery missions burn out quickly. Our MC Businesses guide ranks which product line to prioritize.

Which Career Builder Path Should You Pick?

  • Playing solo, brand new to GTA Online: pick Executive. Special Cargo is the easiest loop to understand, the missions are short, and it sets you up to add a Bunker or Nightclub later without wasted effort.
  • Playing with two or more friends every session: pick Biker or Gunrunner. Both scale hard with extra hands on sourcing and selling, and a crew erases their biggest weakness (the grind of running solo).
  • Optimizing purely for long-term profit and willing to be patient the first hour: pick Gunrunner. The Bunker has the best profit ceiling of the four once fully upgraded, and Mk II weapons later become one of the best money sinks-turned-money makers in the game.
  • Skip Nightclub Owner as your only Career Builder pick. It is the one path that needs other businesses to actually pay off, and you will not have them yet.

What You Can't Undo

The Career Builder and its GTA$4,000,000 are strictly one-time. If you delete the character you built it on and start over, you do not get a second Career Builder run, and you do not get a second GTA$4,000,000 grant. Whatever path you commit to during setup is the business you are stuck with until you save up in-game cash to buy the others normally. Take the extra minute to read each career's description on the selection screen before confirming.

Where to Go Next

Once your starter business is running, the fastest way to compound your GTA$1,000,000 head start is to layer a second business on top rather than switching your first one. Executive players usually add a Bunker next; Biker and Gunrunner players usually add a Nightclub once they have three or more supplying businesses to fill its warehouse. Whichever path you picked, the guides linked above cover the buy lists, sell missions and upgrade priorities you need to turn that first Career Builder business into steady GTA Online income.
