GTA Online Christmas Guide: How the Snow Works and How to Get Every Holiday Gift (Festive Surprise)

Every December, Los Santos does something it never does the rest of the year: it snows. Palm trees under a white blanket, snowball fights on Vinewood Boulevard, free presents in your inventory and a few seasonal monsters to hunt. This is the GTA Online holiday event, born in 2014 as the Festive Surprise and back every winter since. Here is how the snow really works, how to grab every gift, and what to expect for Christmas 2026.

The essentials:

  • You cannot switch the snow on yourself. Rockstar turns it on server-side for a few days around Christmas and New Year, in every session at once.
  • Gifts are tied to login windows. Play on the right days (usually Christmas Day, then around New Year) and the presents land in your inventory automatically.
  • The recurring activities: Snowmen collectibles, the Gooch, the Yeti Hunt and snowball fights, plus discounts and boosted payouts.
  • 2026 dates are not announced yet. Based on recent years, expect the holiday update to land in mid to late December.

How to "activate" the snow in GTA Online

This is the most searched question about the event, so let's answer it plainly: there is no setting, no cheat and no in-game switch that makes it snow in GTA Online. The weather in multiplayer is controlled by Rockstar's servers. When the holiday event starts, Rockstar pushes a change (a "tunable") that turns the weather to snow for everyone, in public, invite-only and solo sessions alike.

What that means in practice:

  • Log in during the snow window. If the event says snow falls from a given date, you only need to start GTA Online on that day. If you were already connected when it switched on, a session change usually picks it up.
  • The snow does not last. In past years it covered the map for a few days around Christmas, often melted, then came back briefly around New Year before disappearing until the next December.
  • Story Mode never gets it. Single-player GTA 5 has no snow outside the North Yankton prologue and its return mission. The holiday weather is an Online-only event.
  • Mods are a no-go. On PC, trainers can force snow in Story Mode, but anything that alters the game while you are connected to GTA Online risks a ban. We do not cover or link to such tools.

A short history of the GTA Online Christmas event

The holiday event has changed a lot since its first edition. A few milestones worth knowing:

YearHighlight
2014The first Festive Surprise: snow on selected days, snowballs, winter clothing, Christmas morning gifts and the Firework Launcher for New Year
2015Gifts delayed: PlayStation Network and Xbox Live went down on Christmas Day, so Rockstar extended the window to claim them
2018Released alongside Arena War, with the Bomb Ball mode and daily gifts from 25 December, including a free Vapid Clique
2022The Gooch appears, a festive thief who robs players in free roam
2023The Yeti Hunt arrives, plus a free Snowball Launcher from the Happy Holidays Hauler
2024-2025Snowmen, the Gooch, the Yeti Hunt and snowball fights all return, alongside a new holiday vehicle each year (the Progen Luiva in 2025)

The formula has settled into a reliable pattern: one holiday update in December, snow over the Christmas period, gifts for logging in, and a set of seasonal activities that each reward an exclusive outfit.

How to get the free Christmas gifts

Holiday gifts are the easiest part of the event. You do not need to buy anything or complete a mission:

  1. Play during the gift window. Rockstar publishes the dates on its Newswire. In 2025, gifts were spread across a window from 23 December to 7 January.
  2. Open your inventory. Clothing usually lands in your wardrobe, weapons and ammo in your weapon wheel, and vehicles in your garage or via a mechanic.
  3. Check the Interaction Menu. Masks and accessories are worn from there. If you never use it, our guide on how to open the Interaction Menu covers every platform.

Typical gifts over the years include holiday sweaters, festive masks, pajamas, fireworks, the Snowball Launcher and occasionally a free vehicle. A gift you miss is usually gone for good, or returns only in a later year.

The seasonal activities, one by one

Snowmen collectibles

While the snow falls, 25 Snowmen are scattered across Los Santos and Blaine County. Destroy one to collect it: each pays $5,000 and 1,000 RP, and finishing all 25 unlocks the Snowman Outfit plus a cash bonus. After the first one, the rest appear in the Collectibles section of the Interaction Menu. Listen for the jingle of sleigh bells: it means a Snowman is close.

The catch is the time limit. In 2025, Snowmen were only available from 23 to 29 December, so plan a session or two that week.

The Gooch

The Gooch is a green, festive thief who targets a random player in a free roam session. He knocks you down and steals your cash and snacks. You then have about two minutes to chase him down. Kill him and he drops a present containing the Gooch mask and outfit plus some cash. Only the player who was robbed can pick it up.

To make him show up, guides agree on a few conditions: be in free roam (not in a mission or interior), carry cash on you rather than in the bank, and play in a small session, since he picks one target from the whole lobby. An invite-only session with a friend works best.

The Yeti Hunt

Introduced in 2023, the Yeti Hunt starts with a text from Tanner. You need to find five clues in the wilderness around Mount Chiliad and Raton Canyon: a deer carcass, a bloodied tent, body parts, a car wreck and a torn shirt, in any order. Each clue pays out, and once all five are found, the Yeti appears at night (in-game, roughly 9 PM to 6 AM) if you stay in the area. Defeat it to unlock the white Yeti Outfit.

Snowball fights

Whenever the ground is white, you can pick up snowballs by standing on snow and using the on-screen prompt. You can carry up to nine. They do little damage, but they are perfect for messing with friends, and some years Rockstar has offered bonuses for snowball kills.

Making the most of the event

The holiday weeks are also one of the best times of the year to earn money, because Rockstar stacks discounts and boosted payouts on top of the festivities.

  • Buy during the sales. Properties and vehicles are often discounted in December. If you are planning a big purchase, our ranking of the best GTA Online businesses helps you choose.
  • Keep your daily streak alive. Daily Objectives still count during the event. Our guide to the 28-day streak explains how to bank up to $750,000.
  • Stack the methods. Combine the Snowmen and Yeti payouts with your usual routine from our list of the fastest ways to make money in GTA Online.
  • Drive carefully. Snow reduces grip, so heavy cars and four-wheel drive vehicles feel much more stable than supercars on the white roads.

If you enjoyed the October festivities, the Christmas event follows the same logic as the GTA Online Halloween events: limited-time hunts, exclusive outfits, and rewards that disappear when the season ends.

What to expect for Christmas 2026

As of late October 2026, Rockstar has not announced this year's holiday update. A few things are safe to assume based on the pattern of the last several years:

  • A December update. Rockstar has released a holiday update every year since 2014, usually in the first half of December, with the festive content activated a little before Christmas.
  • The returning activities. Snowmen, the Gooch, the Yeti Hunt and snowball fights have come back every year since their introduction. Nothing confirms it for 2026, but it would be a surprise to see them dropped.
  • A busier season than usual. GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026, a month before the holidays. GTA Online is not shutting down when it does: Take-Two has said it will keep supporting the game, as explained in our article on whether GTA Online will close after GTA 6. How much Rockstar invests in this year's festive content is the open question.

We will update this guide as soon as Rockstar publishes the 2026 dates on its Newswire.

FAQ

Can you make it snow in GTA Online whenever you want? No. Snow is controlled by Rockstar's servers and only appears during the holiday event. There is no cheat or setting for it.

When does snow come to GTA Online? Usually for a few days around Christmas, sometimes with a short return around New Year. The exact dates change every year and are published by Rockstar.

Is there snow in GTA 5 Story Mode? Only in North Yankton, during the prologue and one later mission. Los Santos never gets snow in single-player.

Can I still get the Snowman, Gooch and Yeti outfits? Only while the holiday event is running. If they return in December 2026 as they have in previous years, that will be your chance.
