GTA 5 Mount Gordo Ghost: How to Find Jolene Cranley-Evans

Between 23:00 and 00:00 in-game time, a translucent woman in a white dress floats above a cliff on Mount Gordo in GTA 5. She vanishes if you get too close, but she is real, repeatable, and tied to one of the game's darkest side stories: the murder of Jolene Cranley-Evans.

Essentials

  • Location: Mount Gordo, the northeasternmost peak in Blaine County, San Andreas.
  • Time window: 23:00 to 00:00 (11pm to midnight), in-game clock.
  • Marker: A flat rock near the summit with "JOCK" written on it in blood.
  • How to view her: Aim down sights (a sniper scope works best) or use the phone camera - she disappears if you walk straight up to her on foot.
  • Who she is: Jolene Cranley-Evans, wife of media personality and 2013 gubernatorial candidate Jock Cranley.

Where is Mount Gordo?

Mount Gordo sits in the far northeast corner of the map, past Paleto Bay, overlooking the coastline and the El Gordo Lighthouse below. It is one of the more remote spots in GTA 5's secret locations, which already makes it an odd place to build a road up to - until you learn why the developers picked it.

The fastest way in is by helicopter or dirt bike, since the summit trail is rough. A Sanchez dirt bike handles the climb well if you would rather ride up than fly.

How to trigger the ghost

  1. Reach the summit area of Mount Gordo before 23:00.
  2. Find the flat rock with "JOCK" scrawled on it in what looks like dried blood - this only appears while the ghost is active.
  3. Wait for the clock to hit 23:00. Sleeping in a nearby safehouse or simply idling and letting time pass both work.
  4. Look toward the cliff edge near the rock. A pale, translucent female figure with long black hair and a white dress will fade into view, floating just above the ground.
  5. Do not walk directly at her - she fades out as you approach on foot. Instead, aim down the sights of any weapon (a sniper rifle gives the clearest look) or raise your phone camera. Both let you close the distance without breaking the illusion.
  6. At 00:00 she disappears until the next in-game night.

She never interacts with the player and cannot be killed, spoken to, or photographed for any in-game reward - this is pure atmosphere, not a mission trigger.

Who is Jolene Cranley-Evans?

The apparition is confirmed, in-fiction, by an article in the Senora Beacon, one of the game's satirical in-world newspapers. According to that story, Jolene Cranley-Evans and her husband John "Jock" Cranley were hiking the cliffs above the El Gordo Lighthouse in 1978 when an argument turned violent. Jock wanted to leave Blaine County for Los Santos to chase a stuntman career; Jolene wanted to stay and care for her ailing father. During the hike, Jock pushed her off the cliff. She died from the fall, and Jock was briefly taken into custody before being released without charge.

Jock Cranley went on to become a stunt double in 1980s TV and film, later reinventing himself as a media personality and, by the time of GTA 5's story in 2013, the conservative candidate in the state's gubernatorial election. The game never states outright that he murdered his wife - it is left as an open, in-universe rumor confirmed only by tabloid reporting and this one recurring apparition on the mountain where it happened. It is one of the more layered pieces of environmental storytelling in the game, on par with the Mount Chiliad mystery a few miles south.

Is the Mount Gordo ghost a myth or confirmed?

Unlike some GTA urban legends that never pan out, this one is fully verifiable in a single play session: load into the game, fly to the coordinates, wait for 23:00, and the ghost appears every time under the right conditions. It is listed as a "proven" case on fan wikis specifically because it is repeatable and consistent, unlike rumors that rely on unverifiable player reports.
