GTA 5 Peyote Plants: Every Location and All 27 Playable Animals
Every peyote plant location in GTA 5 story mode, sorted by land, bird and sea animal, plus how the transformations actually work and where to find the golden ones.

GTA 5 hides 27 peyote plants across Los Santos and Blaine County. Eat one in story mode and your character hallucinates into an animal you can freely control - a dog, a bird, a shark, even a Sasquatch if you go for the golden versions. Here is every location, sorted by the kind of animal it turns you into, plus how the transformation actually works.
The essentials
- 27 regular peyote plants exist in GTA 5 story mode: 15 turn you into a land mammal, 6 into a bird, and 6 (all underwater) into a sea creature.
- They only work in single-player, as any of the three protagonists - not in GTA Online.
- Finding all 27 counts toward the "Cryptozoologist" achievement/trophy and the game's 100% completion checklist.
- After 100% completion (and The Last One stranger mission), golden peyote plants appear one at a time, at specific times of day, and turn you into Bigfoot.
- The animal is not fixed to the plant - each location draws from a pool for its category, so replaying it can give you a different species.
What peyote plants actually do
Every peyote plant looks like a small, spineless cactus sitting somewhere unremarkable - a porch, a rock ledge, a riverbed. Walk up and interact with it, and the game cuts to a first-person hallucination sequence before dropping you into full control of an animal, with its own movement, senses and abilities. Land animals run and jump, birds fly with a real flight model, and sea creatures swim and dive. You stay in that body until you die, dismount by pressing the exit prompt, or simply wait out the trip.
None of it affects your protagonist's stats or story progress. It exists purely for exploration and for the collectible-hunting side of the game, alongside things like the letter scraps and spaceship parts scattered across the map.
Peyote plants were new to GTA 5 - nothing like them existed in GTA 4 - and the feature came back, expanded, once GTA Online added its own much larger set of plants years later. This guide only covers the 27 story-mode locations; the online version uses a separate, longer list that resets and rotates.
Why the animal you get is not always the same
This trips people up: two players who visit the exact same plant do not always become the same animal. Each of the 27 locations belongs to one of three pools - land mammal, bird, or sea creature - and the game picks a species from that pool rather than hard-wiring one animal to one plant. During a collection run it tends to prioritize animals you have not played as yet, which is exactly what you want if you are chasing the achievement, but it also means you cannot treat this list as "plant #9 is always a coyote." Come back to the same spot later in the save and you may get a different member of the same category.
Land mammal locations (15 plants)
These are the ground-level plants, hidden in bushes, on porches, beside rocks, or tucked into small camps. The pool for this category covers Boar, Cat, Cow, Coyote, Deer, Mountain Lion, Pig, Rabbit, and the seven playable dog breeds (Husky, Poodle, Pug, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, West Highland Terrier).
- Raton Canyon, at the East Alamo View lookout.
- Galileo Park, in the rest area near the observatory tunnel.
- Mount Gordo, beside a small pond, next to a tree.
- Grand Senora Desert, by the farmhouse near the Redwood Lights Track.
- El Burro Heights, in the car park at the south-coast overlook.
- Mirror Park, on the rear porch of a house near Utopia Gardens.
- La Puerta, next to the B.J. Smith Recreation Center.
- Los Santos International Airport area, by the bus wreck behind Los Santos Customs.
- Mount Josiah, in the valley north of Fort Zancudo.
- Tongva Hills, near the waterfall at Two Hoots Falls.
- Grand Senora Desert, among the oil pumps west of Trevor's airfield.
- Vinewood Hills, along the ranger-station trail.
- RON Alternates Wind Farm, in the trailer park on the northern edge.
- Paleto Bay, in North Point park.
- Vinewood Hills, by a storm drain behind North Sheldon Avenue.
Bird locations (6 plants)
These sit up high - on rooftops, ledges and mountain faces - which is the game's way of telegraphing "this one flies." The pool covers Chickenhawk, Cormorant, Crow, Hen, Pigeon and Seagull.
- Gentry Manor Hotel, on the rooftop.
- The Venetian hotel, in the roof garden.
- Mount Chiliad, on the northern face of the mountain.
- Mount Chiliad, at the summit, near the gondola station.
- The small island in the Pacific Ocean near the NOOSE headquarters.
- Raton Canyon, on a rock outcrop.
Underwater / sea creature locations (6 plants)
Every single one of these is submerged, so you will need to dive to reach them. The pool covers Dolphin, Killer Whale, Hammerhead Shark, Tiger Shark, Stingray and reef fish.
- Alamo Sea, on the lake bed.
- Del Perro Pier, in the water beneath the pier.
- Pacific Ocean, east of Los Santos International Airport.
- Pacific Ocean, east of Humane Labs.
- Pacific Ocean, off the coast near Paleto Bay.
- Pacific Ocean, at the mouth of the Zancudo River.
Golden peyote plants and Bigfoot
Once you have 100% completion and have played through The Last One, a single golden peyote plant appears somewhere on the map each day, but only during a narrow early-morning window (roughly 5:30 to 8:00 AM) and only in foggy or snowy weather. Eat one and you become Bigfoot - part of the long-running Sasquatch easter egg that has haunted the Grand Theft Auto series since San Andreas. The location rotates by day of the week, and you need to eat them in order from Sunday through Saturday to complete the set.
Tips for finding all 27 efficiently
- Do this after finishing the main story. Several plants sit inside restricted areas (Fort Zancudo, the airport) that are easier to reach once heat from earlier missions has died down, and you will already be exploring the map for other collectibles.
- Switch characters to speed up ground travel between clusters - Trevor's rural safehouses put him close to the Blaine County plants, while Michael and Franklin start closer to the Los Santos and Vinewood plants.
- Bring a submarine or diving gear for the six underwater locations; swimming there from the surface every time wastes a lot of playtime.
- If you are also chasing 100% completion, tackle peyote plants alongside other map-wide collectibles like the 10 secret locations - you will cross paths with several plants without going out of your way.
- The Fort Zancudo area holds two plants close together (Mount Josiah and the wind farm to its west), covered in more depth in the Fort Zancudo military base guide if you want a full map of that zone, including the wanted-level risk of trespassing.
- Save your game before eating a plant in a dangerous spot. Nothing carries over between the animal and your protagonist, but dying as the animal ends the trip immediately and you will need to walk back.
How many peyote plants do you need for 100% completion?
All 27 regular plants count. The golden peyote plants that turn you into Bigfoot do not count toward completion - they are a reward for reaching 100% and finishing The Last One, not a requirement to get there. Check the full breakdown in the 100% completion checklist if you are tracking every requirement at once.
