In 1975, Vinewood starlet Leonora Johnson was murdered, and her dismembered remains were found near the Land Act Dam. Her killer, Vinewood director Peter Dreyfuss, wrote a confession letter to his friend David Richards, admitting the crime and justifying it as an act of artistic obsession. David tore the letter into 50 pieces rather than turn it over to police, and scattered them across the state.

Decades later, those scraps of paper are still lying around Los Santos and Blaine County, waiting for Michael, Franklin or Trevor to stumble across them. Picking one up adds a fragment of the confession to your collection, viewable from the pause menu under Collectibles.

How to start collecting Letter Scraps

Letter Scraps do not appear in the world from the start of the game. You need to complete the story mission Repossession, which happens fairly early in the main campaign while playing as Michael. Once that mission is done, all 50 scraps spawn permanently at their fixed locations and can be collected in any order, with any character, in any session (story mode only - this hunt does not exist in GTA Online).

Tips for finding all 50 fast

• Listen for rustling paper. Every scrap plays a distinct paper sound when you are close, even before it appears on screen.
• Use Chop. While playing as Franklin, his dog Chop will bark and point toward nearby scraps - useful for the trickier hidden spots.
• Fly for the remote ones. A handful of scraps sit on cliffs, islands or rooftops. Trevor's flying skill and a cheap helicopter save a lot of time versus climbing or swimming.

What happens after you collect all 50

Once the 50th scrap is in your inventory, the mission A Starlet in Vinewood unlocks on the map, playable only as Franklin. He travels to Peter Dreyfuss' house in Vinewood Hills and confronts him with the confession. Dreyfuss panics and tries to flee - the choice to let him go or kill him is yours, but a Gold Medal completion specifically requires killing him.

Finishing the mission awards the A Mystery, Solved achievement/trophy, one of the rarer completions in GTA 5 story mode simply because so few players know the Letter Scraps hunt exists without a guide. It also counts toward full completion if you are chasing 100% in GTA 5, alongside the rest of the Strangers and Freaks missions.

Who killed Leonora Johnson? (Spoilers)

The confession identifies Peter Dreyfuss, a Vinewood film director, as Leonora Johnson's killer.
