GTA 5 Story Missions in Order: Every Mission and the Choices That Change What Comes Next
All GTA 5 story missions in order, act by act, from the Prologue to the three endings, with every choice that changes the rest of the run: heist approaches, crew picks, the stock market trick and the final decision.

GTA 5 story mode has 69 main missions on the in-game counter, but you never play exactly 69: heist approaches add or remove setup jobs, and a single run lands around 74 missions depending on your picks. This guide lists every GTA 5 story mission in order, act by act, and flags each choice that changes what comes next, from the Jewel Store approach to the three-way ending.
The essentials
- 69 story missions count toward completion, plus heist setups that depend on the approach you choose.
- Five big decisions shape the run: the Jewel Store, Merryweather, Bureau Raid and Big Score approaches, then the final choice between three endings.
- Crew picks matter: cheap gunmen, drivers and hackers can die or lose loot, while survivors gain skill for later heists.
- The order is flexible: Michael, Franklin and Trevor run parallel storylines, so several missions unlock at once and can be played in any order.
- One money trick depends on the story: Lester's assassination missions move the stock market, so invest before playing them.
How the order works
Rockstar's story is a single spine with three strands woven around it. Big story beats (the heists, the FIB jobs, the finale) force a fixed sequence, but between them the map often shows two or three mission markers, one per character. The order below follows the standard progression used by most walkthroughs, notably GTABase's mission list. The numbers below are a reading guide, not the in-game counter: setups are folded into rows and the finale is one mission with three versions. If a mission appears earlier for you, that is normal.
Act 1: Franklin, Michael and the Jewel Store
| # | Mission | Character | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prologue | Michael, Trevor | North Yankton, 2004 |
| 2 | Franklin and Lamar | Franklin | |
| 3 | Repossession | Franklin | |
| 4 | Complications | Michael, Franklin | Unlocks Michael |
| 5 | Father/Son | Michael, Franklin | |
| 6 | Chop | Franklin | |
| 7 | Marriage Counseling | Michael, Franklin | Triggers the debt to Martin Madrazo |
| 8 | Daddy's Little Girl | Michael | |
| 9 | Friend Request | Michael | |
| 10 | The Long Stretch | Franklin | |
| 11 | The Good Husband | Michael | Family mission |
| 12 | Casing the Jewel Store | Michael | Choice: Smart or Loud |
| 13 | Bugstars Equipment / BZ Gas Grenades | Michael, Franklin | Smart setups |
| 13b | Carbine Rifles | Michael, Franklin | Loud setup |
| 14 | The Jewel Store Job | Michael, Franklin | First heist |
Choice 1: Smart or Loud at the Jewel Store
The Smart approach has you pose as Bugstars exterminators and gas the store, so it needs two setups (the Bugstars van and the BZ grenades). The Loud approach is a straight armed robbery and needs only the carbine rifles. The payout ceiling is similar; what really changes is the crew. A skilled hacker shortens the window you have, a bad driver can crash and lose part of the take, and every crew member who survives gains experience for the next heist. Our Jewel Store Job breakdown covers the best crew for each approach.
Act 2: Trevor arrives and Merryweather
| # | Mission | Character | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | Mr. Philips | Trevor | Unlocks Trevor |
| 16 | Trevor Philips Industries | Trevor | |
| 17 | Nervous Ron | Trevor | |
| 18 | Crystal Maze | Trevor | |
| 19 | Friends Reunited | Trevor, Michael | |
| 20 | Fame or Shame | Michael, Trevor | |
| 21 | Dead Man Walking | Michael | |
| 22 | Three's Company | All three | |
| 23 | By the Book | Michael, Trevor | |
| 24 | Hood Safari | Franklin, Trevor | |
| 25 | Did Somebody Say Yoga? | Michael | |
| 26 | Scouting the Port | Trevor | Choice: Offshore or Freighter |
| 27 | Minisub | Any of the three | Setup, both approaches |
| 27b | Cargobob | Any of the three | Setup, Offshore only |
| 28 | The Merryweather Heist | Michael, Franklin, Trevor | |
| 29 | The Hotel Assassination | Franklin | First Lester contract |
Choice 2: Offshore or Freighter
Freighter sends Michael aboard a cargo ship to plant sticky bombs while Franklin covers him with a sniper rifle, and needs only the Minisub setup. Offshore has Michael carry the minisub under a Cargobob so Trevor can locate the device underwater, and needs both setups. Neither changes the ending; Freighter is shorter, Offshore is less of a firefight.
The money choice nobody tells you about
The Hotel Assassination is the first of Lester's contracts, and each one moves a company on the in-game stock market. Invest with Franklin, and ideally Michael and Trevor too, before you play it. The other four contracts unlock after the finale, which is why most players save their big trades for the very end. The full method is in our stock market and assassinations guide.
Act 3: Blitz Play and the FIB
| # | Mission | Character | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | Boiler Suits | Any of the three | Blitz Play setup |
| 31 | Masks | Any of the three | Blitz Play setup |
| 32 | Trash Truck | Any of the three | Blitz Play setup |
| 33 | Tow Truck | Any of the three | Blitz Play setup |
| 34 | Blitz Play | All three | Armored truck heist |
| 35 | I Fought the Law... | Franklin, Trevor | |
| 36 | Eye in the Sky | Franklin, Trevor | |
| 37 | Mr. Richards | Michael | |
| 38 | Caida Libre | Michael, Trevor | |
| 39 | Deep Inside | Franklin | |
| 40 | Minor Turbulence | Trevor |
Blitz Play has no approach choice: you always hit the armored truck with the garbage truck. Getting all four setups done is simply the price of entry.
Act 4: Paleto Bay and the road to the Bureau
| # | Mission | Character | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 41 | Paleto Score Setup | Michael, Trevor | |
| 42 | Predator | All three | |
| 43 | Military Hardware | Michael, Trevor | Steal the military gear |
| 44 | The Paleto Score | All three | Third heist |
| 45 | Derailed | Michael, Trevor | |
| 46 | Monkey Business | All three | |
| 47 | Hang Ten | Michael, Trevor | |
| 48 | Surveying the Score | All three | |
| 49 | Bury the Hatchet | Michael, Trevor | Back to North Yankton |
| 50 | Pack Man | Franklin, Trevor | |
| 51 | Fresh Meat | Michael, Franklin | |
| 52 | The Ballad of Rocco | Michael | |
| 53 | Cleaning out the Bureau | Michael | |
| 54 | Architect's Plans | Franklin | Choice: Fire Crew or Roof Entry |
| 55 | Fire Truck | Any of the three | Setup, Fire Crew only |
| 56 | The Bureau Raid | Michael, Franklin |
Choice 3: Fire Crew or Roof Entry
Fire Crew dresses the team as firefighters and walks them in through the front after a staged fire; it needs the Fire Truck setup. Roof Entry drops them by helicopter onto the FIB building. Both reach the same server room. Pick based on the crew you trust: a seasoned hacker from the earlier heists makes either approach smoother. Our heist gold medal guide lists the medal conditions for each version.
Act 5: the family, Devin Weston and the Big Score
| # | Mission | Character | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 57 | The Wrap Up | Michael, Franklin, Trevor | |
| 58 | Reuniting the Family | Michael | |
| 59 | Doting Dad | Michael | Family mission |
| 60 | Legal Trouble | Michael | |
| 61 | Lamar Down | All three | |
| 62 | Meltdown | Michael | Last mission before the Big Score |
| 63 | Parenting 101 | Michael | Family mission |
| 64 | Planning the Big Score | All three | Choice: Subtle or Obvious |
| 65 | Stingers and three Gauntlet setups | Any of the three | Subtle setups |
| 65b | Driller, Sidetracked, Getaway Vehicle | Any of the three | Obvious setups |
| 66 | The Big Score | All three | Final heist |
Choice 4: Subtle or Obvious
The Big Score is the Union Depository gold job and the biggest payday in the game. Subtle swaps the gold into four modified Gauntlets after a security-truck switch and has more setups. Obvious blows the vault, uses a stolen train and a helicopter lift, and plays louder. Make a save after Meltdown: you can replay the heist with the other approach later, which also helps with 100% completion.
Act 6: the final choice and the three endings
After the Big Score, Franklin gets two phone calls and a decision. This is the only choice in the game that permanently removes a character.
| Option | Mission | Character | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Something Sensible (Ending A) | Franklin | Trevor dies, you lose him for good |
| B | The Time's Come (Ending B) | Franklin | Michael dies, you lose him for good |
| C | The Third Way (Ending C) | All three | Everyone lives, the main villains go down |
Ending C keeps all three characters playable, which matters for side activities, money and the remaining Lester contracts. Endings A and B lock out the dead character and his stash. We compare all three, with the consequences of each, in GTA 5's three endings: which one should you pick?
Choices that look big but are not
- By the Book: the torture minigame lets you pick tools, but the outcome is the same.
- Friends Reunited, Crystal Maze, Nervous Ron: Trevor's chaos has no branching.
- Family missions: they repair Michael's family storyline but do not unlock alternate endings.
Tips for a clean run
- Hire good crew early. Cheap members save cash on the first heist but often fail; survivors level up for free across later heists.
- Keep a manual save before every planning board. Casing the Jewel Store, Scouting the Port, Architect's Plans and Planning the Big Score are the four branch points.
- Play the Hotel Assassination with money already invested. It is the only Lester contract inside the main story.
- Do side content in between. Many Strangers and Freaks missions unlock between story beats and close once you pass certain points.
- Track the full list with our GTA 5 100% completion checklist if you are going for every medal.
What this could mean for GTA 6
GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 with two leads, Lucia and Jason, according to Rockstar's official trailers. Nothing official confirms branching heists or multiple endings yet. If Rockstar keeps the GTA 5 formula, expect approach choices on planning boards and a crew system again, but treat that as an expectation drawn from GTA 5, not a confirmed feature.
FAQ
How many story missions does GTA 5 have? The in-game counter tracks 69 main story missions. With heist setups, a single run plays roughly 74, depending on the approaches you choose.
Can you miss a story mission in GTA 5? You cannot skip main missions, but approach choices mean you only play one branch of each heist per save. Optional setups for the other branch stay locked unless you replay.
Which ending is canon? Rockstar never stated one officially, but Ending C, The Third Way, is the one where all three survive and is the most widely recommended.
