GTA 5 Enhanced vs Legacy on PC: Differences, Save Migration and Which Version to Choose
GTA 5 now exists twice on PC. Here is what separates Enhanced from Legacy, how to move your Story Mode save and GTA Online character, and which version to play.

If you open your PC library today you will find two copies of GTA 5: Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto V Legacy. Same game, same map, same story, but they are not interchangeable. Enhanced is the modern build with ray tracing and fast loading; Legacy is the original 2015 PC release kept alive for older machines. This guide explains what actually separates them, how to move your Story Mode save and your GTA Online character across, and which one you should play.
The essentials
- Enhanced launched on PC on 4 March 2025 and is a free upgrade for anyone who already owned GTA 5 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Games Launcher).
- Legacy is the original PC version. It still runs and still gets fixes, but new GTA Online content lands on Enhanced.
- Enhanced needs a much newer PC: an SSD, a DirectX 12 graphics card with 4 GB of VRAM minimum, and 8 GB of RAM.
- The two versions do not share a player pool. You cannot join a friend's GTA Online session if they are on the other version.
- You can migrate one Story Mode save and your GTA Online profile from Legacy to Enhanced, once, on PC only. It does not work in reverse, and it does not work between PC and console.
Enhanced vs Legacy: what is actually different
Enhanced is essentially the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version of GTA 5 brought to PC, with a few PC-only extras on top. Rockstar's official support pages and the Steam store listings describe the same set of upgrades.
| GTA 5 Enhanced | GTA 5 Legacy | |
|---|---|---|
| Released on PC | 4 March 2025 | April 2015 |
| Price for existing owners | Free upgrade | Already owned |
| Ray tracing | Ray-traced shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and global illumination | None |
| Upscaling | NVIDIA DLSS 3, AMD FSR 1 and FSR 3 | None |
| Loading times | Much shorter (SSD and DirectStorage) | Original load times |
| Storage | SSD required | Works on a hard drive |
| GTA Online content | All new updates, plus Hao's Special Works, Career Progress and GTA+ | No new-gen exclusive content |
| Player pool | Enhanced players only | Legacy players only |
Graphics and performance
The headline is ray tracing. On a capable graphics card, Enhanced adds ray-traced shadows and reflections, ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, which changes how Los Santos looks at night and in tight alleys. Support for DLSS 3 and FSR 3 frame generation helps keep frame rates high when those settings are on. Enhanced also supports higher resolutions, ultrawide aspect ratios and higher frame rates than Legacy.
The second big change is loading. Thanks to SSD-only storage and DirectStorage, the trip from the main menu into Story Mode or a GTA Online session is dramatically shorter than on Legacy, where long loading screens were part of the experience for ten years.
Content
In Story Mode, the missions, characters and map are identical. Enhanced brings the visual upgrades and some quality-of-life tweaks, not new campaign missions.
GTA Online is where the gap widens. Enhanced has everything the console new-gen version has: Hao's Special Works vehicle upgrades, the Career Progress tracker and access to the GTA+ membership. Legacy players keep their existing content, but those new-gen features are not coming to them.
Online: two separate worlds
This is the part that catches most groups of friends out. Enhanced and Legacy are treated as two different games online. A player on Legacy cannot join, invite or be invited by a player on Enhanced. If your crew plays together, everyone needs to be on the same version.
System requirements
According to the GTA V Enhanced Steam listing, as summarized by Corsair, these are the official targets. Rockstar also warns on the store page that requirements may change with future content updates.
| Minimum (Enhanced) | Recommended (Enhanced) | |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 (latest updates) | Windows 11 |
| CPU | Intel Core i7-4770 / AMD FX-9590 | Intel Core i5-9600K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| RAM | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | NVIDIA GTX 1630 / AMD RX 6400 (4 GB) | NVIDIA RTX 3060 / AMD RX 6600 XT (8 GB) |
| Storage | 105 GB on an SSD | 105 GB on an SSD (DirectStorage compatible) |
Legacy keeps the original 2015 requirements, built around DirectX 10 and 11-era graphics cards and happy to run from a hard drive. If your PC is old enough that Enhanced will not start or runs badly, Legacy is the version made for it. Thinking about the future? Our estimate of the GTA 6 PC requirements shows how far above Enhanced the next game is likely to sit.
How to migrate your Story Mode save
Rockstar's official process uses the Social Club cloud: you upload a save from Legacy and download it in Enhanced.
- Link your accounts. Make sure the Rockstar Games account you sign in with is linked to your PC platform account (Steam, Epic or Rockstar Games Launcher).
- Launch GTA 5 Legacy and load Story Mode.
- Open the Pause Menu, go to the Game tab and choose Upload Save Game.
- Pick the save you want and confirm. An alert asks you to confirm this is the Story Mode save you want to migrate.
- Launch GTA 5 Enhanced, open the Pause Menu and download the uploaded save from the Game tab.
Rules to know before you start:
- Only one save can be uploaded per account. You can replace the uploaded save as often as you like, until you start the download in Enhanced.
- Once the download succeeds, the migration is used up. No further Story Mode migrations are available on that account.
- Your Legacy save stays where it is, but anything you do in Legacy afterwards does not sync to Enhanced.
- PC only. Moving a save between PC and PlayStation or Xbox is not supported.
Tip: pick your most complete save, ideally one with all three protagonists' properties bought and the stock market money already made. Some players report the upload option only appears when Legacy is still installed, so do not uninstall it before uploading.
Cheat codes work the same way in both versions, with the same consequences for achievements. See our complete list of GTA 5 Story Mode cheats and why cheats disable achievements before you load a save you care about.
How to migrate your GTA Online character
GTA Online uses a separate, one-time migration of your whole Online profile: characters, money, properties, vehicles and progress.
- Launch GTA 5 Enhanced.
- Start the migration from the GTA Online landing page, or from the Pause Menu by selecting Online, then Migrate Profile.
- Choose the Legacy profile you want to bring across and confirm.
- Wait. While the migration runs you cannot enter GTA Online in either Legacy or Enhanced. Rockstar says it can take time depending on your character and server load.
What to keep in mind:
- Eligibility is not guaranteed. Rockstar lists account suspensions or bans, and profiles with illegitimate or insufficient progress, as reasons a profile cannot migrate. Players who see "not eligible for migration at this time" are told to contact Rockstar Support.
- Migrating overwrites existing Enhanced Online data. If you already started fresh on Enhanced, the migration replaces that profile.
- Your Legacy profile is kept, but from then on progress does not sync between the two versions.
- PC only, like Story Mode. Console characters cannot be moved to PC this way.
Mods, cheats and anti-cheat
For Story Mode modding, Legacy has ten years of tools and mods built around it, and plenty of them were never updated for Enhanced. If a mod you rely on has no Enhanced build, that is a genuine reason to keep Legacy for single player. Our guide to installing GTA 5 mods on PC covers how to keep mods away from GTA Online and avoid bans.
GTA Online on PC is protected by BattlEye anti-cheat. Modding or using third-party tools online is against Rockstar's rules and can get your account banned, on either version. Keep mods to Story Mode, on a clean copy of the game files, and never take them online.
One side effect of the anti-cheat: Rockstar does not support GTA Online on Steam Deck and Linux. Story Mode is a different matter, so check the current situation before buying for a handheld.
Which version should you choose?
Pick Enhanced if:
- Your PC has an SSD and a graphics card at least on par with a GTX 1630 or RX 6400.
- You play GTA Online and want new updates, Hao's Special Works and the Career Progress tracker.
- Your friends have already moved to Enhanced.
- You want the best-looking version of Los Santos and much shorter loading screens.
Stay on Legacy if:
- Your PC is older, has no SSD, or Enhanced simply will not run well on it.
- You rely on Story Mode mods that only exist for Legacy.
- Your whole crew is still on Legacy and nobody wants to move.
For most players with a reasonably recent gaming PC, Enhanced is the right call: it is free, it looks better, it loads faster and it is where GTA Online is going. Migrate your best Story Mode save and your Online character, keep Legacy installed only if you have a specific reason to, and you are set.
What about GTA 6 on PC?
GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Rockstar has not announced a PC version yet, and history suggests one comes later. Our GTA 6 PC release date estimate breaks down what GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 tell us about the likely wait. Until then, GTA 5 Enhanced is the closest thing to a current-gen Rockstar open world on PC.
