GTA 5 Strangers and Freaks: The Complete Guide to Every Side Mission

GTA 5 has 66 Strangers and Freaks missions split between Franklin, Michael and Trevor, and only 24 of them (all belonging to Franklin) are required for 100% completion. Here is every chain, who gives it, and what you get for finishing it.

Strangers and Freaks are the game's optional character-driven side jobs: quirky, story-flavored encounters with San Andreas locals that exist entirely outside the main heist plot. They range from a few minutes of towing cars to multi-mission arcs that end in a unique vehicle or a six-figure payday.

The essentials

  • 66 total Strangers and Freaks missions across the three protagonists.
  • Each stranger first appears as a gray "?" blip on the map. Walk up and talk to them once to reveal their name and unlock their mission thread.
  • Only Franklin's 24 Strangers and Freaks missions count toward 100% completion; Michael's and Trevor's are optional bonus content.
  • Rewards include cash, unique vehicles (like the Space Docker), a purchasable business (the Towing Impound), and a handful of trophies/achievements.
  • Chains unlock gradually as the story progresses, so it is worth switching to each protagonist and driving past their usual haunts after every major heist.

How Strangers and Freaks work

Every Stranger and Freak is tied to one specific protagonist. You cannot trigger Franklin's missions while playing as Michael, for example. Most chains open up after a specific story mission, so if a "?" refuses to react, you likely have not reached the required point in the campaign yet. Once you meet a stranger for the first time, their name is added to that character's contacts list on the phone, and later missions in the same chain are re-triggered either by another map blip or by a phone call.

Franklin's Strangers and Freaks (required for 100%)

Franklin has more Strangers and Freaks tied to his 100% completion checklist than the other two combined, which makes him the character to focus on first.

Nervous Ron: Grass Roots and Exercising Demons

Ron Jakowski, a paranoid conspiracy theorist squatting near Sandy Shores, hands out a short two-mission chain (Grass Roots, then Exercising Demons) that has Franklin and later Trevor cleaning up Ron's mess with the local Lost MC and a fake bomb threat. Finishing the chain adds weed farmer Barry as a new contact, which opens his own separate stoner-comedy mission line.

Tonya's Pulling Favors

Tonya Wiggins needs help because her boyfriend keeps skipping his repo-man shifts. The Pulling Favors chain is a set of straightforward vehicle repossession jobs using a tow truck. Clear every Tonya mission and the Towing Impound Lot in La Mesa becomes purchasable for 150,000 dollars, generating passive income of 500 dollars per car towed automatically afterward.

Beverly Felton's Paparazzo series

Beverly is a sleazy tabloid photographer who drags Franklin into staking out celebrities across Los Santos. The chain runs Paparazzo, Paparazzo - The Sex Tape, Paparazzo - The Partnership, Paparazzo - The Highness, Paparazzo - The Meltdown and finishes with Paparazzo - Reality Check. Each job pays a few hundred dollars, and the finale can net an extra 2,000 dollars if you search Beverly's body before he drives off.

Omega's Far Out (the spaceship parts)

Omega is a Sandy Shores prophet convinced that alien technology is scattered across the state. His Far Out strand only truly resolves once you have collected all 50 Spaceship Parts collectibles as any character and returned the final piece as Franklin. Doing so unlocks the Space Docker, a neon-lit UFO buggy, along with the Beyond the Stars achievement/trophy.

Michael's Strangers and Freaks

The Epsilon Program (The Truth)

Michael can join the Epsilon Program, a not-so-subtle cult parody, through a sequence of donation and ritual missions that make up The Truth mission series. The final job forces a choice: hand over 2.1 million dollars in "apocalypse funds" to Epsilon's helicopter pilot for a rusty tractor and the cult's blessing, or gun down the cult's security and keep the cash. Neither option is required for 100%, but the chain is one of the better character moments in the whole side-mission roster.

Michael's Fame or Shame stranger job also opens the door for Franklin's Far Out strand with Omega, so it is worth clearing early if you are chasing the Space Docker.

Trevor's Strangers and Freaks

Maude's Bail Bonds

Bounty hunter Maude Eccles sends Trevor after four bail-jumpers scattered across Blaine County: Ralph Ostrowski in a Davis Quartz quarry, Larry Tupper at a barn southwest of Harmony, Glenn Scoville on Mount Chiliad, and Curtis Weaver at Dignity Village. Capture each one alive for 10,000 dollars, or kill them for half that, up to 40,000 dollars total if you play it clean.

Vinewood Souvenirs

Collectors Nigel and Mrs. Thornhill send Trevor stalking Vinewood celebrities for personal items: Love Fist guitarist Willy, actor Tyler Dixon's stolen wardrobe, a dog collar belonging to starlet Kerry's pet, golfer Mark Furstenburg's club (which requires killing him), and washed-up actor Al Di Napoli, before a final confrontation closes out the chain.

Josh Bernstein's real estate jobs

Failing realtor Josh Bernstein hires Trevor for a string of odd jobs after his business gets squeezed out by a rival agent, paying out in small cash rewards as the chain plays out at a Vinewood motel.

Civil Border Patrol and Minute Man Blues

The self-styled Minute Men militia, a Civil Border Patrol splinter group led by a man named Chad Mulligan, use Trevor for a run of vigilante busywork that wraps up with Minute Man Blues, the last mission in the strand.

Which Strangers and Freaks count toward 100% completion?

Only Franklin's Strangers and Freaks missions register on the in-game 100% completion checklist, even though the game's own tracker sometimes displays a misleading count. If you are chasing the platinum trophy or the Xbox achievement for full completion, see our full GTA 5 100% completion checklist for every other requirement, including collectibles, hobbies and story missions. Michael and Trevor's chains are still worth finishing for the unique rewards and character writing, they just will not move the completion percentage on their own.

Tips for finding every stranger and freak

Strangers and Freaks unlock in waves tied to story progress, so the most reliable method is to switch through all three protagonists after finishing any major heist and fly, drive or swim past their usual territory: Sandy Shores and Grand Senora Desert for Trevor's crew, Vinewood Hills and Rockford Hills for Beverly and the Paparazzo jobs, and Strawberry or South Los Santos for Tonya and Ron. Pair this checklist with the GTA 5 special abilities guide to make the driving and combat-heavy chains (like Maude's bounties) far less painful, and check our list of GTA 5's secret locations since several strangers spawn near spots most players never visit. If you enjoy this kind of off-the-beaten-path content, our complete GTA 5 easter eggs guide covers the game's other hidden secrets, from Mount Chiliad's mural to the Kraken myth off the coast of Los Santos.

Strangers and Freaks were one of GTA 5's most ambitious side-content systems back in 2013, and they still hold up as some of the best written detours in the game. Whether you are chasing 100% with Franklin or just want the Space Docker, working through these chains is worth the detour from the main story.
