Can Two People Play GTA 5 on the Same Console? Split-Screen, Local Co-Op and Alternatives
GTA 5 has no split-screen and no local co-op, on any platform. Here is what actually works for two players: GTA Online on two consoles, shared accounts, passing the controller, and the compatibility traps to avoid.

Short answer: no. GTA 5 has never had split-screen, on any platform, in Story Mode or in GTA Online. Two people can still enjoy it together in the same room, but not on one screen with two controllers at once. Here is what actually works, what each option costs, and the traps to avoid before you buy a second copy.
The essentials
- No split-screen, no local co-op. Not on PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC. Rockstar never added it in any update.
- Playing together means GTA Online, with one console or PC per player, one copy of the game per player and, on console, an online subscription each.
- Both players must be on the same version. No crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC, no cross-gen between PS4 and PS5, and on PC the Enhanced and Legacy editions run separate sessions.
- On one console, the realistic option is taking turns in Story Mode, ideally by splitting the three protagonists.
- GTA 6 has not confirmed split-screen either. Nothing official says it will have it.
Why GTA 5 has no split-screen
Split-screen means rendering the world twice, from two cameras, every frame. In a dense open world like Los Santos and Blaine County, that roughly doubles the work on streaming, traffic, pedestrians and lighting. When GTA 5 launched in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, the game was already pushing those consoles to the limit, and Rockstar built its multiplayer around GTA Online instead: one player per screen, many players per session.
The re-releases on PS4, Xbox One, then PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022 improved resolution, frame rate and loading times, but they kept the same design. No patch has ever added a local two-player mode.
The last Grand Theft Auto with real couch co-op was GTA San Andreas on PlayStation 2 in 2004: a second player could join on the same screen through special icons scattered on the map, with a shared camera rather than a true split. That mode was never carried over to GTA 4 or GTA 5.
Option 1: GTA Online with two consoles (the only real co-op)
If you want to play at the same time, this is the only official way. In practice it means:
| What you need | PlayStation | Xbox | PC |
|---|---|---|---|
| One machine per player | 2 consoles | 2 consoles | 2 PCs |
| One copy per player | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Online subscription | PlayStation Plus for each account | Xbox paid online tier for each account | Not required |
| Two screens | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Once both of you are online, one player opens the pause menu, goes to the friends list and sends an invite, or you join each other's session from the console's own friend list. From there you can run contact missions, heists such as the Cayo Perico Heist, races and free-roam together. To manage your character, vehicles and passive mode quickly, learn how to open the interaction menu.
Two consoles in the same living room is the classic "LAN party" setup: two TVs, or a TV and a monitor, side by side. It is the most expensive option, but it is the only one where both players are in the same session.
The compatibility traps
Before buying a second copy for a friend or a sibling, check that both of you will land on the same version. GTA Online splits its players in several ways:
- PlayStation, Xbox and PC do not play together. There is no crossplay in GTA Online, whatever the generation.
- PS4 and PS5 are separate. The PS5 version (and the Xbox Series X|S version) has its own player pool since the March 2022 release. A PS4 player and a PS5 player cannot share a session.
- On PC, Enhanced and Legacy are separate. Since the 2025 Enhanced update, Rockstar keeps players on the two editions in different sessions. Both of you must launch the same one. If you are not sure which to pick, our guide to GTA 5 Enhanced vs Legacy on PC explains the differences.
Option 2: two accounts on one console (taking turns)
With a single console, you can still make GTA 5 a two-person game, just not simultaneously.
- Create a user profile per person. Each profile gets its own Story Mode saves and its own GTA Online character, so nobody overwrites anyone.
- Share the game on the console. On PS5, with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on the account that owns the game, other users of that console can launch it. On Xbox, setting the console as your Home Xbox does the same thing. Only one person can play at a time.
- Check the online side. Depending on the platform and your settings, the subscription of the main account can cover online play for other users of the same console. Read Sony's or Microsoft's support page for your exact setup before relying on it.
This is ideal for a household where two people want their own progress without buying the game twice.
Option 3: pass the controller in Story Mode
GTA 5 is unusually well suited to shared single-player because of its three protagonists. A few ways to make it fun as a duo:
- One character each. One person plays Michael, the other Franklin (and you fight over Trevor). Switch players every time the story switches characters.
- Mission by mission. Alternate after each main mission or each heist setup. During the heists, the planner can choose the approach while the other plays the job.
- Challenge nights. One player picks a goal (a stunt jump, a chase, a gold medal), the other tries it, then swap.
- Free-roam chaos. The Story Mode cheat codes are perfect for passing the controller: one player enters a code, the other has to survive the result. Remember that cheats disable trophies and achievements for that session, and they only exist in Story Mode, never in GTA Online.
It is not true co-op, but on a single screen it is the closest thing GTA 5 offers.
Option 4: remote solutions (not local, but sometimes useful)
A few console features are sometimes presented as "2-player GTA 5", so it is worth being clear about what they do:
- PS5 Share Play lets a friend watch your game online and, with the "visitor plays as you" mode, take over your controller remotely. The host needs PlayStation Plus. It is still one player at a time, and sessions last one hour.
- Remote Play lets you play your own console on another device. It does not add a second player.
Neither of these creates split-screen. They are ways to share or move a single-player session, not to play co-op on one console.
What about GTA 6?
The natural next question is whether GTA 6 will finally bring couch co-op. As of today, Rockstar has not announced any split-screen or local co-op mode for GTA 6, and the trailers show nothing of the kind. Based on GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, which both skipped it, the safe expectation is that multiplayer will again be online, one player per screen. We cover what is known in our article on GTA 6 split-screen and local co-op, and whether players on different consoles will meet in GTA 6 crossplay.
FAQ
Can two people play GTA 5 on the same PS5 or Xbox at the same time? No. GTA 5 has no split-screen or local co-op mode. Two people can only play at the same time on two separate consoles, in GTA Online.
Is there a GTA 5 split-screen mod on console? No. Consoles do not run mods. Anything claiming to unlock split-screen on PS5 or Xbox is a scam.
Do we need two copies of GTA 5 to play together? Yes, one copy per player and per machine, plus an online subscription for each account on PlayStation and Xbox.
Can a PS4 player and a PS5 player play GTA Online together? No. The PS4 and PS5 versions have separate player pools, just like PlayStation and Xbox.
Which GTA game has local co-op? GTA San Andreas on PlayStation 2 had a two-player mode on the same screen. No later main GTA game brought it back.
