GTA 6 Rare and Legendary Animals: What We Know About the 170+ Species

GTA 6 will not just have animals in the background. According to Game Informer's cover story, published on 29 September 2026 and confirmed by Rockstar, Leonida is home to more than 170 animal species, and some of them are classed as Rare, Discoverable or Legendary. That is the first time a Grand Theft Auto game has borrowed this kind of wildlife system from Red Dead Redemption 2. Here is what has actually been confirmed, what is still unknown, and what the Red Dead template suggests about how rare and legendary animals could work when the game launches on 19 November 2026.

The essentials

  • More than 170 species live in Leonida, according to Game Informer's reporting with Rockstar.
  • The roster includes more than 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and marine life.
  • Some animals fall into three categories: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Rockstar has not said which species belong to which.
  • Named species include alligators, pelicans, flamingos, manatees, armadillos, feral cats, rhesus macaque monkeys, green iguanas, cane toads, octopuses, turtles, jellyfish and whales.
  • An in-game list fills up as you observe new species, and a zoo is one of the places you can visit.
  • Rockstar has not named a single Legendary animal. Any list of "the legendary animals of GTA 6" online is guesswork.

Where the 170 species figure comes from

The number was first reported in Game Informer's GTA 6 cover story, which went live at the end of September 2026. Outlets including Dexerto, Notebookcheck and ActuGaming relayed the same breakdown from that issue. Rockstar's VP of dynamic art, Michael Kane, explained the thinking behind it: "Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida."

That matters because, until then, everything we knew about GTA 6 wildlife came from frame-by-frame readings of the trailers. Our earlier roundup of every animal confirmed in the GTA 6 trailers listed around a dozen creatures, from the alligator in the backyard pool to the raccoon in the trash can. The Game Informer figure multiplies that by more than ten.

For scale, GTA 5 shipped with only a few dozen animal types, most of them in the countryside of Blaine County. Red Dead Redemption 2 was promoted in 2018 with more than 200 species. GTA 6 sits much closer to the western than to its own predecessor.

The breakdown: birds, mammals, reptiles and sea life

Rockstar has not published a full list, but the reporting gives the main groups.

GroupWhat has been reportedExamples named so far
BirdsMore than 60 typesFlamingos, pelicans, seagulls
Land mammalsMore than 30 speciesArmadillos, feral cats, rhesus macaques, deer, cougars
Reptiles and amphibiansCount not givenAlligators, green iguanas, cane toads
Fish and sea lifeCount not givenOctopuses, turtles, jellyfish, whales, manatees

A few points stand out:

  • Birds are the biggest single group. With 60 or more types, birdwatching looks like it could be a real pastime rather than a curiosity, which fits Florida's reputation as one of the best birding states in the US.
  • The ocean is populated. Turtles, octopuses, jellyfish and occasional whales point to a lot of life below the surface. If you plan to explore the reefs, our guide to underwater diving in GTA 6 covers oxygen, shipwrecks and marine life.
  • Deer and cougars were already in the screenshots. Rockstar's official images of the Mount Kalaga area show a cougar stalking deer, which is the clearest sign that predators and prey interact.

Invasive species: Florida's real wildlife problem, in game form

One detail shows how closely Rockstar studied the real state. Several of the confirmed animals are invasive species in Florida:

  • Rhesus macaques. Florida has had a wild population since the 1930s. The Silver Springs colony descends from a handful of monkeys released by a boat tour operator, according to a University of Florida fact sheet.
  • Green iguanas, which are so common in South Florida that they famously drop out of trees during cold snaps.
  • Cane toads, a toxic species that is a real danger to pets.
  • Feral cats, which live in cities and suburbs alike.

This is the kind of detail Rockstar usually turns into satire. A monkey troop raiding a tourist spot or an iguana falling onto a parked car would be very on-brand for Leonida. That is speculation for now, but the species themselves are confirmed.

Rare, Discoverable and Legendary: what the three categories mean

This is the most interesting part of the reveal, and also the vaguest. The reporting says players can track animals classed as Rare, Discoverable or Legendary, and that Rockstar has not yet said which species fall into each. Nothing more official has been shared since.

So what can we reasonably expect? The labels match systems Rockstar built for Red Dead Redemption 2, which is the best guide we have.

Discoverable animals

In Red Dead Redemption 2, the Compendium filled in as you saw, studied or killed new species. GTA 6 has a confirmed equivalent: an in-game list that fills as you observe new species. "Discoverable" most likely refers to the animals that count towards that list, which would make spotting all 170 or more a long-term completion goal, similar to collectibles.

Rare animals

"Rare" suggests species that only spawn in specific places, at certain times of day or in certain weather. In Florida terms, the obvious candidates are animals that real people go out of their way to see: manatees in warm springs, roseate spoonbills in the wetlands, or a Florida panther in the deep interior. None of those has been confirmed as Rare in GTA 6. They are simply the kind of animal the category seems built for.

Legendary animals

Red Dead Redemption 2 had 16 Legendary animals in its story mode, each a unique, oversized creature found in one region and tied to a reward. If GTA 6 follows that model, a Legendary animal would be a one-off: a huge alligator in the swamps, a giant shark off the keys, or a famous local creature from Leonida's own folklore. Again, Rockstar has named none of them, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What we would watch for at launch:

  1. Whether Legendary animals are tied to a mission giver, as with the trapper and hunter characters in Red Dead.
  2. Whether they appear only in the wilderness or also in Vice City itself.
  3. Whether photographing them counts, or whether they have to be hunted.

Can you hunt rare animals in GTA 6?

This is where caution matters. Game Informer's reporting mentions new hair and fur systems for coats and pelts, and the screenshots show predators and prey in the wild. That makes hunting plausible, but Rockstar has not detailed a hunting or pelt-selling system. We break down the evidence in our guide to hunting and selling pelts in GTA 6.

If GTA 6 does follow GTA 5, hunting at least has a precedent: the old game already had a hunting side activity with Cletus. Our GTA 5 hunting guide covers how that worked, and it gives a sense of what a modern version might build on.

It is just as possible that many rare animals will be about observation rather than killing. A zoo is confirmed, petable dogs are confirmed, and the species list fills up when you observe wildlife. Rockstar seems to want players to look at animals as much as chase them.

Where to look for wildlife in Leonida

The reporting says wildlife spans urban and rural areas, inland and ocean waters, and wetlands such as swamps and the Everglades-style Grassrivers. Based on the regions Rockstar has shown, here is where we expect the most variety:

  • Grassrivers and the swamps: alligators, wading birds, turtles and probably many of the reptiles.
  • Mount Kalaga: deer, cougars and woodland species, the closest thing to Red Dead territory.
  • The Leonida Keys and the coast: sea birds, manatees, dolphins, sharks and the marine life listed above.
  • Vice City itself: feral cats, iguanas, raccoons, pigeons and the zoo.

Our map guide to the six confirmed regions of Leonida explains each area in more detail.

Watch out for fake "legendary animal" lists

With launch two weeks away, expect a wave of videos and websites claiming to know every Legendary animal and where it spawns. Before launch, none of that can come from Rockstar's official material, which has not named a single one. A list that looks too precise is either a guess or comes from leaked material, and we do not cover leaks. Be especially careful with anything that asks you to download a file or "unlock" an animal early: that is a scam, not a guide.

We will update this page with real locations once the game is out and the categories can be verified in play.
