GTA 6: Do You Need a Rockstar Games Account, and What Happened to Social Club?
Social Club is now the Rockstar Games account, with the same login. Here is what the GTA 6 store page says about account registration, what GTA 5 suggests for story and online play, and how to secure your account before 19 November.

Short answer: Rockstar has not published a dedicated rule for GTA 6, but its own store page already warns that the game "may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration (minimum age varies)". Based on how GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 work today, expect the story to boot without one on PS5 and Xbox, and expect every online and community feature to ask for it. As for Social Club, it has not vanished: it was renamed and folded into the Rockstar Games account you will log in with on 19 November 2026.
The essentials
- Social Club is now the Rockstar Games account. Rockstar's support site confirms the rename. Your old Social Club ID became a Rockstar Games ID, with the same email and password, and nothing to migrate.
- GTA 6 lists account registration as a possible requirement. The legal line on the official Rockstar Store page mentions an internet connection, a Rockstar Games account and a single-use serial code. "May require" is standard wording, not a confirmation that the story is locked behind a login.
- On console, the GTA 5 precedent says story first, account for online. GTA 5 story mode runs without a linked account; GTA Online, crews, rewards and character transfers need one.
- On PC, the account has always been mandatory. Every PC Rockstar game since 2019 runs through the Rockstar Games Launcher, even when bought on Steam or Epic. GTA 6 has no PC date yet.
- The account is free. It is separate from PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass and GTA+, which are paid subscriptions.
What happened to Social Club?
Social Club was Rockstar's account and community layer for more than a decade: profiles, stats, crews, Snapmatic photos, the Newswire and the account settings for GTA Online. If you played GTA 5 online, you almost certainly have one, even if you never typed the password.
From late 2023, players noticed the wording changing across Rockstar's sites: "Social Club member" became "Rockstar Games account". Rockstar then made it official on its support site in an article titled "Changes to Rockstar Games Social Club". The key points:
- the Social Club brand is retired and its services now live on the main Rockstar Games website;
- your Social Club ID is now your Rockstar Games ID;
- you sign in with the same username, email and password;
- you do not need to do anything for the switch.
Over 2025 and 2026, press reports describe the old Social Club pages redirecting to rockstargames.com and the account settings moving to the main site. In other words, the community hub that GTA 5 players knew is now simply "your Rockstar account", and that is the identity GTA 6 will use.
Does GTA 6 need a Rockstar Games account?
Here is what is official, and what is not.
Official. The Rockstar Store page for Grand Theft Auto VI carries this legal disclosure: the game "may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration (minimum age varies)" and a "single-use serial code". The physical edition is a code in a box (no disc), which fits that last line. Pre-load starts on 12 November 2026, a week before launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Not official. Rockstar has not said whether the GTA 6 campaign can be started without signing in. There is no FAQ entry, no Newswire post and no platform listing that settles it. Anything you read that says "GTA 6 is always online" or "GTA 6 needs no account at all" is a guess.
Our reading, based on GTA 5 and RDR2. The same "may require" disclosure has sat on Rockstar's store pages for years, including for games whose story mode runs perfectly offline on console. It is a catch-all that covers online modes, bonuses and PC versions. The likely picture at launch:
| Feature | Rockstar account likely needed? | Why we think so |
|---|---|---|
| Starting the story on PS5 / Xbox | Probably not | GTA 5 and RDR2 story modes run without a linked account on console |
| Online multiplayer (if and when it arrives) | Yes | GTA Online and Red Dead Online both require one |
| Pre-order and in-game bonuses | Very likely | Bonuses on Rockstar titles are tied to your Rockstar ID |
| Crews, friends, stats and photo sharing | Yes | These have always been Social Club features |
| A future PC version | Yes, always | Every PC Rockstar game uses the Launcher and its account |
On the offline question specifically, we cover the details in Can You Play GTA 6 Offline Without an Internet Connection?.
What GTA 5 teaches us
GTA 5 is the best guide we have, because GTA 6 is built by the same studio on the same business model.
Story mode. On PlayStation and Xbox, you can play the GTA 5 campaign from start to finish without ever linking a Rockstar account. The game offers to link one; you can skip it.
GTA Online. The moment you go online, Rockstar asks you to sign in or create an account and link it to your PSN or Xbox profile. It powers your character, your crew, your weekly bonuses and your stats on the website.
Transfers. When GTA 5 moved from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the only way to bring your GTA Online character across was through your Rockstar Games account. If Rockstar ever offers any form of carry-over to GTA 6, it will go through the same account. Do not count on it, though: see Will Your GTA Online Money and Characters Transfer to GTA 6?
PC. On PC, no Rockstar account means no game at all, even for the Steam and Epic versions. If you are waiting for a PC release, the account is non-negotiable.
Rockstar account, PSN, Xbox, GTA+: who does what
Four different accounts and subscriptions get mixed up in forums. Here is the split.
- PlayStation Network or Xbox account. Mandatory. It owns your copy of GTA 6, handles the pre-order, the download and the pre-load.
- PlayStation Plus or the entry Xbox Game Pass tier. Paid. Sony and Microsoft require it for online multiplayer on their consoles, not for single-player.
- Rockstar Games account (ex Social Club). Free. Your identity with Rockstar: online modes, bonuses, crews, support tickets.
- GTA+. Paid, optional, Rockstar's monthly membership for online perks. PlayStation pre-orders include a free month that renews automatically, so read GTA 6 Pre-Order Bonus: The Free GTA+ Month That Auto-Renews before it bills you.
The Rockstar account never replaces your console account. You link the two, once.
When will GTA 6 have online?
Rockstar has not dated an online mode for GTA 6, and GTA Online itself arrived about two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013. We track every statement in Will GTA 6 Have Multiplayer at Launch?. Whenever it arrives, it will run on your Rockstar Games account, so setting it up now costs nothing.
How to get your account ready before 19 November
If you want a smooth launch night, do this before pre-load on 12 November:
- Find your old login. Go to rockstargames.com and sign in with the email you used for Social Club. If you have forgotten the password, reset it now rather than at midnight on launch day, when Rockstar's servers will be busy.
- Check the email address. An old address you no longer read is the most common way to get locked out. Update it in the account settings.
- Turn on two-step verification. Rockstar offers it in the security settings. A GTA launch is prime time for phishing, and a hijacked account can carry your online progress with it.
- Check the linked platforms. In the account settings, see which PSN or Xbox profiles are linked. If you play on a new console account, you can link it from the game when prompted.
- Mind the age rules. Rockstar sets a minimum age for accounts, and it varies by country. For a younger player, the console's family settings matter more than the Rockstar account: see GTA 6 Parental Controls on PS5 and Xbox.
Watch out for fake "Social Club" emails
The rename is a gift to scammers. Expect emails and DMs saying your "Social Club account will be deleted before GTA 6" or that you must "verify your account to unlock early access". Rockstar's own guidance on the change is clear that existing users had nothing to do. Never type your password on a page you reached through a link in a message: go to rockstargames.com yourself. No real beta or early download exists, and no official message will ask for your password.
Bottom line
You do not lose anything with the end of Social Club: your account simply became a Rockstar Games account with the same login. For GTA 6, Rockstar's store page lists account registration as a possible requirement, and the GTA 5 precedent suggests the story will run on console without it while everything online, social and bonus-related will ask for it. With the account free and five minutes to secure, the sensible move is to sign in once before launch week, reset what needs resetting and turn on two-step verification. We will update this page as soon as Rockstar publishes launch-day details.
