GTA 6 Parental Controls on PS5 and Xbox: How to Limit Access and Spending Before Launch

GTA 6 arrives on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and in plenty of homes the console it lands on is shared with a teenager. Whether you have decided your 15-year-old can play it or that they should wait, the tools that actually enforce your decision are not in the game: they are in the console's family settings. Here is how to set them up on PlayStation and Xbox before launch night, so the rules are in place before the download finishes.

Essentials

  • Expected rating: GTA 6 was widely reported in early October 2026 as PEGI 18 in Europe and M (Mature 17+) from the ESRB, with an "In-Game Purchases" notice. Check the official rating sites before relying on it.
  • Both consoles can block it automatically for a child account, based on its age rating, and let you approve it as a one-off exception if you choose to.
  • Spending is the big one: on PS5 a child account's monthly limit defaults to 0; on Xbox you switch on "Needs adult approval to buy things".
  • Online is separate from the game: voice chat, text and multiplayer each have their own switch, independent of whether the game itself is allowed.
  • Do it before 19 November. Pre-loads, launch-night hype and a fresh store page are exactly when unplanned purchases happen.

Step zero: the child needs their own account

Every control below only works on a child account that belongs to a family group. If your teenager plays on your profile, or on an adult account they created with a made-up birth date, none of it applies.

  • PlayStation: create a family in Account Management (or on the PS5 under Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management) and add the child as a family member. Sony notes that the child should verify their email and be signed in to PSN on the console, or the controls may not take effect.
  • Xbox: add the child to your Microsoft family at family.microsoft.com, or through the free Xbox Family Settings app on your phone.

If the account they already use has the wrong birth date, fix that first. It is the single most common reason parental controls "don't work".

PS5: the settings that matter for GTA 6

Everything lives in one place: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, then select your child. You can do the same from a browser in Account Management, which is handy when the console is in their bedroom.

1. Age level for games

PS5 offers presets (Child, Early Teens, Late Teens or Older). For PS5 games, every preset blocks titles rated above the child's age. In practice, an 18-rated game simply will not start on a 15-year-old's account. Changing any single line switches the profile to Customize, which is fine.

2. Allowed Games: the exception route

If you decide your teenager can play GTA 6 anyway, you do not need to lower the age level for everything. When a child launches a blocked game, they can send you a request. You approve it from the PS5 notifications, from Family Management > Allowed Games, or from the email Sony sends. That way GTA 6 is allowed and the rest of the 18-rated catalogue stays locked.

3. Monthly spending limit

By default, a child account's Monthly Spending Limit is 0, and purchases draw on the family manager's wallet. Leave it at 0 if you want to approve every purchase, or set a small monthly budget. Keep in mind that anyone you add as a guardian can change it too.

4. Communication and user-generated content

Set to Restrict, this disables text messages and voice chat with other players, and hides other people's user-generated content. It is restricted by default in all three presets. If GTA 6's online mode follows the GTA Online model, this is the switch that decides who can talk to your child.

5. Playtime settings

You can set daily playtime, with a different allowance for each day of the week, and decide whether the console warns them or logs them out when time runs out. A school-night cap is worth setting before a 60-hour open world shows up.

6. Lock it down

Change the console restriction passcode so the settings can't be undone from the console itself. Several guides note it ships as 0000 on many consoles, which every teenager knows.

Xbox Series X|S: the settings that matter for GTA 6

The easiest route is the Xbox Family Settings app on your phone: changes apply to the console without walking to it. The same options exist at family.microsoft.com and on the console under Settings > Account > Family settings.

1. Content restrictions

In the app, select your child, then Content Restrictions, turn on Filter Inappropriate Content and confirm their age. On the console, the same setting is a numeric scale: a value of 11, for example, allows E10+ games but blocks T and M. An M-rated GTA 6 is blocked for anyone under 17 by default.

You can also allow or block an individual title regardless of its rating, which is the Xbox equivalent of Sony's Allowed Games.

2. Purchases: "Needs adult approval to buy things"

Switch it on, and every purchase triggers a request you approve or deny by email or at account.microsoft.com/family. One important caveat from the ESRB's own guide: gift cards and money already added to the child's account are not blocked by this setting. If you want full control, don't load their account with gift card balance.

3. Online communication and multiplayer

Under Social, "Manage online communications" lets you choose Everyone, Friends only or No one. Under Multiplayer you can block online play entirely, and a separate switch covers cross-network play. These are worth setting on day one, because GTA 6's online component has not been detailed yet.

4. Screen time

The app sets a schedule per day, a time limit and a time window. When they ask for more, you can extend it from your phone.

Purchases: what to expect in GTA 6

Rockstar has not detailed GTA 6's in-game economy yet, so treat the following as an educated expectation based on GTA 5. In GTA Online, real money bought Shark Cards (in-game cash), and Rockstar runs a paid subscription, GTA+. The pre-order bonus includes a free month of GTA+ that renews automatically, which is exactly the kind of charge that surprises parents a month later. We cover how to cancel it in our GTA+ free month guide, and what Take-Two has said about microtransactions in our Shark Cards explainer.

The console-level spending controls above catch all of it: Shark Card-style purchases, subscriptions and add-ons all go through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.

Scams aimed at teenagers

Launch season brings fake "free GTA 6 money" sites, fake betas and phishing pages that ask for a PSN or Microsoft password. A child account with no stored card and purchase approval switched on limits the damage, but a quick conversation helps too. Our guides on spotting fake GTA 6 betas and early downloads and avoiding pre-order scams list the usual tricks.

Should a teenager play GTA 6?

That decision is yours, not the console's. The PEGI 18 label is a recommendation in most of Europe rather than a law, as we explain in our GTA 6 age rating guide. The controls above simply make whichever decision you take stick: allow it as a single exception, keep chat and spending locked, and cap the hours.

A five-minute checklist before 19 November

  1. Make sure your teenager has their own child account with the right birth date, inside your family group.
  2. Keep the age filter on, and decide now whether GTA 6 gets an exception.
  3. Leave spending at 0 (PS5) or turn on purchase approval (Xbox), and don't load gift card balance.
  4. Restrict voice chat and messages to friends, or turn them off.
  5. Set playtime limits for school nights.
  6. Change the console passcode.

While you're at the console, our pre-launch checklist for PS5 and Xbox covers storage, updates and pre-loading, so launch night goes smoothly for everyone in the house.

Menu names come from PlayStation's support pages and the ESRB's parental control guides, read in October 2026. Sony and Microsoft rename menus from time to time, so the exact wording on your console may differ slightly.
