GTA Online Best Weapons: The Complete Ranking by Category (2026)

GTA Online has over 60 weapons, but only a handful actually win freemode fights, carry heist finales, or justify the Ammu-Nation bill. If you only remember one thing: the Special Carbine Mk II is the best all-around assault rifle, the Heavy Sniper Mk II with explosive rounds is the strongest one-shot PvP tool, and the Combat MG Mk II is the safest pick when you are not sure what you will run into next.

The essentials:

  • Best assault rifle: Special Carbine Mk II (Full Metal Jacket ammo for PvP, Armor Piercing for heists)
  • Best sniper rifle: Heavy Sniper Mk II with Explosive Rounds
  • Best machine gun: Combat MG Mk II
  • Best SMG: Tactical SMG
  • Best pistol: AP Pistol (utility) or Heavy Revolver Mk II (stopping power)
  • Best heavy weapon: Homing Launcher for vehicles, Up-n-Atomizer for player kills
  • Mk II conversions are almost always worth the Ammu-Nation fee once you own the base weapon

What "best" means in GTA Online

GTA 5 story mode ranks weapons by raw damage and handling in scripted missions. GTA Online is different: cost, rank requirement, ammo economy and what you are actually fighting all change the answer. A weapon that dominates a Freemode fistfight over a Vinewood Souvenir can be dead weight in a Cayo Perico heist where noise and juggernauts matter more than DPS. This ranking splits the arsenal by category and tells you which role each gun actually wins.

Best assault rifle: Special Carbine Mk II

The Special Carbine Mk II is the most complete rifle in the game. Its recoil pattern stays controllable well past mid-range, it kills fast without needing headshots, and the Mk II ammo types let one gun cover PvP, contact missions and heist finales without swapping loadouts. Load Full Metal Jacket rounds for player fights (they punch through cover and light armor) and Armor Piercing rounds when NPCs or armored vans are the target.

The standard Carbine Rifle and the Service Carbine are cheaper alternatives if you have not unlocked the Mk II yet, but neither matches its accuracy at range once the Mk II attachments are online.

Best sniper rifle: Heavy Sniper Mk II

Fitted with Explosive Rounds, the Heavy Sniper Mk II can one-shot a player and disable a vehicle's engine in the same hit, which makes it the single most feared weapon in Freemode. It is slow to reload and useless up close, so it rewards positioning over reflexes. The Marksman Rifle Mk II is the better choice if you want a sniper that also holds up in closer engagements, thanks to its faster handling and the Heavy Barrel attachment for extra long-range damage.

Best machine gun: Combat MG Mk II

The Combat MG Mk II combines a very high fire rate with tight accuracy and low recoil, which is rare for a weapon in its class. It chews through armor, keeps working at ranges where most automatics fall off, and it is the gun to bring when you genuinely do not know what the next fight will look like. The trade-off is ammo cost and a slower draw speed than an SMG or pistol.

Best SMG: Tactical SMG

The Tactical SMG has replaced the Micro SMG and the Mini SMG as the category's default pick. It hits harder per bullet, fires faster, and keeps its accuracy at ranges where older SMGs spray wildly. Use it for drive-bys, interiors, and any fight where mobility matters more than long-range precision.

Best pistol: AP Pistol and Heavy Revolver Mk II

Two pistols cover different jobs. The AP Pistol's fire rate and magazine size make it the best all-purpose sidearm, and it can take a suppressor for stealth sections of a heist setup. The Heavy Revolver Mk II is the opposite tool: slower, but Full Metal Jacket rounds let it strip light vehicle armor and punch through bulletproof glass, which the AP Pistol cannot do.

Best heavy weapon: Homing Launcher and the Up-n-Atomizer

Against vehicles, the Homing Launcher is still the reference: it locks on automatically and drops most cars, bikes and helicopters in one or two hits. Against players, the Up-n-Atomizer (a Doomsday Heist Elite Challenge reward) is a slept-on pick: its blast radius and fast recharge make it brutal in tight interiors, even though it cannot be bought at Ammu-Nation.

Mk II conversions are bought at the Weapon Workshop in your bunker once the base weapon is unlocked. Expect the Special Carbine Mk II conversion to run about $135,000, the Heavy Sniper Mk II around $165,375, and the Combat MG Mk II near $119,000. All three pay for themselves the first time they save a heist finale.

Best loadout for Freemode PvP

Carry the Special Carbine Mk II as your primary, the Heavy Revolver Mk II or AP Pistol as backup, and a Homing Launcher on your Oppressor or in your vehicle's trunk for anyone who tries to fight you from the air. Snipers should swap the Carbine for the Heavy Sniper Mk II once they can hold angles from a rooftop.

Best loadout for heists and solo public lobbies

Heist finales reward accuracy and armor penetration over raw fire rate: bring the Special Carbine Mk II with Armor Piercing rounds for guards, and keep the Combat MG Mk II in reserve for juggernauts and reinforced doors. Read this site's GTA Online Bunker and Gunrunning guide if you have not built the Weapon Workshop yet, since every Mk II upgrade in this ranking runs through it. If Cayo Perico is your target, the GTA Online Cayo Perico Heist guide covers which loadout the compound guards actually punish, and the Diamond Casino Heist guide does the same for the vault approach.

Budget picks for new players

Before you can afford Mk II conversions, the base Special Carbine, the AP Pistol and the Micro SMG cover most early fights for a fraction of the cost. If you still remember the story-mode arsenal, our GTA 5 best weapons ranking breaks down the same categories for single player, where prices and rank requirements do not apply. Cheat codes only work in story mode, but if you are curious what the console arsenal looked like, the GTA 5 weapon cheat codes list has every code.

How this changes when GTA 6 launches

Rockstar has already shown a smaller, more deliberate weapon wheel for GTA 6, with weapons picked up and dropped on the ground rather than stored forever in a bottomless inventory. Expect GTA Online's era of stockpiling 15 weapons at once to end there, which should make categories like "best sidearm" and "best rifle" matter even more once the online mode for GTA 6 arrives.
