GTA 5 Chop: Everything You Can Do With Franklin's Dog

Chop is Franklin Clinton's Rottweiler in GTA 5, and he is one of the few animal companions in the series you can actually control. You can pet him, walk him, play fetch, track a target through his nose, and for a while you could train him through a companion app that changed his behavior in the main game. Here is everything Chop can do, on every platform.

Essentials:

  • Chop is a Rottweiler, originally owned by Lamar Davis, who hands him to Franklin after the mission "Hood Safari"
  • Basic interactions are petting, walking, and playing fetch with a ball
  • The "Chop the Dog" iFruit companion app once let you train him and unlock extra tricks and outfits, but Rockstar shut its servers down on December 12, 2022
  • Chop plays a starring, playable role in the mission "Chop," where you switch to his point of view to track a target by scent
  • A dog resembling Chop appears on a "Beware of the Dog" sign in the first GTA 6 trailer, though Rockstar has not confirmed any connection

Who is Chop?

Chop is a black-and-tan Rottweiler wearing a green collar. He belongs to Lamar Davis, Franklin's best friend, but Lamar decides Chop will be safer living with Franklin, so the dog effectively becomes a fixture of Franklin's household for the rest of the story. Chop follows Franklin between his properties as the story progresses, including the upgraded home in Vinewood Hills once Franklin's fortunes improve.

Unlike most animals roaming Los Santos, Chop is not just scenery. He has his own animation set, his own mission, and his own AI behavior tied to a "happiness" meter that determines how responsive and playful he is at any given moment.

How to interact with Chop

Chop can usually be found at whichever Franklin house is currently active. Walk up to him and the game offers a short interaction prompt. The exact button depends on your platform:

  • PlayStation: hold L2 to enter aim/interact mode near Chop, then tap R1 to trigger the current action. Cycle which ball or item you are holding through the weapon wheel.
  • Xbox: hold LT near Chop, then press RB to trigger the walk or play prompt.
  • PC: approach Chop, hold the right mouse button to aim/focus on him, then left-click to trigger the interaction, including calling him for a walk.

With Chop's happiness maxed out, more commands appear when you interact with him, including letting him off the leash or starting a short training session on the spot. Rockstar recommended visiting him every three or four in-game days to keep his mood high; a neglected Chop is slower to obey and less playful.

The iFruit app and Chop's training system

At launch, Rockstar shipped a companion app called iFruit that doubled as a Tamagotchi-style pet sim for Chop. Feeding him, playing fetch, walking him, and running him through mini-games in the app all fed back into the main game as a synced save. A well-cared-for Chop obeyed commands faster, performed more tricks on request, and was reportedly better at pointing you toward nearby collectibles.

That system is gone now. Rockstar shut down the original iFruit and iFruit LS Customs servers on December 12, 2022, which means the app-based training, unlockable collars, and outfit rewards can no longer be accessed. Chop still exists in the game world and still responds to basic petting, walking, and fetch, but the deeper training loop that used to run through the app is retired. If you are chasing a completionist run of the base game, factor that limitation into your 100% completion checklist.

Chop's playable mission

Chop's biggest moment in the story comes in the mission "Chop," given by Lamar early in Franklin's arc. After a chase goes wrong and the target D flees on foot into a train yard, Franklin lets Chop out of the van to help track him down. Once the trail runs cold, the game lets you switch control directly to Chop, using his heightened sense of smell to sniff out D's scent while Franklin investigates the areas Chop points you toward. It is the first time in the series you play from an animal's perspective rather than a human character's, and it doubles as a light introduction to how the three-way character-switching mechanic works before you get Michael, Franklin, and Trevor's full toolkit.

If you want the fuller picture of how switching works across the story's three leads, see our breakdown of GTA 5's special abilities for Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Chop's mission is a preview of the same input logic, just with a dog instead of a human protagonist.

Chop and Los Santos' side content

Chop does not headline his own strand of side missions the way some of the Strangers and Freaks characters do, but he shows up around Franklin's world throughout the story and in ambient scenes at the house. If you are working through everything else Los Santos has to offer between story missions, our guide to every Strangers and Freaks side mission is the next stop, and Chop makes a good excuse to revisit Franklin's properties while you are at it.

Could Chop return in GTA 6?

Nothing is confirmed, but fans have already been picking apart the first GTA 6 trailer frame by frame, and one detail stood out: a "Beware of the Dog" sign on a house door around the 49-second mark features a dog that closely resembles Chop's black-and-tan Rottweiler coloring. It could be a deliberate nod, or it could just be a common dog design reused for a background prop. Rockstar has not commented on it either way, and no Rottweiler has been directly confirmed as a playable or named companion in Leonida.

Given how many other GTA 5 faces and references have already turned up in the marketing, a returning Chop, or at least a wink to him, would not be out of character. We track every one of those callbacks in our guide to every nod to older GTA games hidden in the GTA 6 trailers, and we keep a running list of GTA 5 and GTA 4 characters who could return in GTA 6. Until Rockstar confirms anything, treat the sign as a fun spot, not a leak.

Common questions about Chop

Is Chop essential to finishing GTA 5? No. He is entirely optional outside of his one dedicated mission, "Chop," which is a required story mission for Franklin. Everything else (petting, walking, fetch) is flavor content you can ignore without affecting progress.

Does Chop's happiness still matter without the iFruit app? The core happiness system tied to petting, walking, and fetch still functions using in-game interactions alone. What's gone is the deeper training loop and reward unlocks that used to sync from the app.

Can Chop die? Chop can be hurt like any other NPC if he wanders into danger or gets hit by a vehicle, though Rockstar generally keeps him out of harm's way during scripted sequences. He is not required to survive for you to finish the story.

Where does Chop live? He is tied to Franklin's current residence rather than a fixed location, so you will find him at whichever Franklin house is active as the story progresses, from the starter home in Chamberlain Hills to the mansion in Vinewood Hills later on.

Bottom line

Chop is a genuine companion character, not just an ambient animal: you can pet him, walk him, and play fetch any time he's around, and his one big story mission puts you directly in his paws to sniff out a fleeing target. The iFruit training layer that once deepened his behavior is gone since the app's December 2022 shutdown, but the core interactions still work exactly as they did in 2013. Whether he makes any kind of comeback in GTA 6 is speculation for now, resting on a single background sign that fans are reading a lot into.
