GTA 5 and GTA 4 Characters Who Could Return in GTA 6
Rockstar has been reusing characters across the GTA universe for two decades. Here's what the franchise's own history, not leaks, says about who from GTA 5 and GTA 4 could show up in GTA 6.

Grand Theft Auto has never really killed off its old world. Lazlow Jones has hosted a radio show in every single 3D and HD-era game since 2001, Weazel News has been broadcasting since Liberty City, and Rockstar has spent two decades dropping quiet nods to characters from games that are, on paper, set in a different universe. So when the question comes up for GTA 6, the honest answer is not "will old characters show up" - it is "which ones, and how much." Nothing here is confirmed. This is a look at the pattern Rockstar has built over 25 years, read against what the GTA 6 trailers have actually shown.
The essentials:
- GTA 6 protagonists Jason and Lucia are new characters; Rockstar has never made a returning protagonist the lead of a mainline game.
- Packie McReary from GTA 4 already crossed over once, appearing as a recruitable heist crew member in GTA 5, and referencing Niko Bellic directly.
- Voice actor comments (not official confirmations) have fueled speculation about Franklin and Trevor specifically.
- The confirmed trailer nods so far point to background references and rebranded props, not walk-on cameos.
- Category: this is speculation grounded in franchise history and public trailer footage only, never leaks or datamines.
Why Rockstar keeps recycling faces
Since GTA 4, Rockstar has treated its "HD universe" (GTA 4, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and now GTA 6) as one loosely shared continuity, distinct from the older 3D-era games. Lazlow Jones is the clearest example: he moved from Chatterbox FM in the 3D era into Integrity 2.0 on GTA 4's Liberty City radio, then resurfaced as a Weazel talent-show host in GTA 5, all while making in-joke references to his own past. Weazel News, Ammu-Nation, and brands like Patriot beer have followed the same path, appearing across multiple games as reliable connective tissue. That habit is the strongest evidence that GTA 6 will reuse pieces of Los Santos and Liberty City lore even though the new setting is Leonida, a fictionalized Florida built around Vice City. The GTA 5 trio: Michael, Franklin and Trevor
Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips are the obvious names fans bring up, and each has a different case.
Michael is the one GTA 5 protagonist who has never reappeared anywhere since 2013, which some fans read as Rockstar keeping him in reserve rather than retiring him for good. Franklin's voice actor, Shawn Fonteno, posted a cryptic line online along the lines of "if I told y'all, I'd get in trouble," which plenty of fans took as a tease, though it has never been backed by an official statement from Rockstar. Trevor is the least likely of the three: actor Steven Ogg has said in interviews that he thinks it would actually make a good story beat to have Trevor killed off before GTA 6 even starts, which reads more like an actor musing about his own character than a leak.
None of this is a confirmation of anything. Rockstar has historically kept its mainline protagonists locked to their own game rather than carrying them forward as playable leads, and Jason and Lucia are described as the sole protagonists of GTA 6. A background cameo, a radio mention, or a newspaper headline is far more plausible than any of the three showing up as a mission-giver. If you want the full picture on the confirmed leads, our guide to who Jason and Lucia are covers what Rockstar has actually locked in.
The supporting cast with a real shot
Below the three protagonists, GTA 5's "Strangers and Freaks" roster and its inner circle are actually a better bet for cameos, because Rockstar has used side characters this way before.
- Lamar Davis, Franklin's best friend, is popular enough that fans regularly ask for him specifically, and side characters have crossed games before Michael or Trevor ever would.
- Lester Crest, GTA 5's hacker and heist planner, already namedrops Niko Bellic in dialogue, showing Rockstar is comfortable using him as a bridge between games rather than a protagonist who needs closure.
- Tracey and Jimmy De Santa, Michael's kids, have been floated by fans analyzing trailer shots, including a much-discussed theory that a background character nicknamed "Mud Girl" resembles a grown-up Tracey. Nothing here has been verified by Rockstar.
- Chop, Franklin's dog, got a fan theory boost after a "Beware Of The Dog" sign in the GTA 6 trailers showed an animal that looks similar, though the resemblance is circumstantial at best and the character himself returning is considered unlikely by most trailer analysts.
Our full catalogue of GTA 5's Strangers and Freaks is a good primer on which of these side characters actually have the kind of arc Rockstar likes to revisit.
The GTA 4 survivors
GTA 4's Liberty City cast has already proven it can travel. Packie McReary is the standout: he shows up in GTA 5 committing a robbery in Strawberry early in the story and can later be recruited as a heist gunman, and he explicitly brings up Niko Bellic and the Three Leaf Clover bank job while riding with the player. Niko himself never appears in person in GTA 5, but Rockstar built at least one direct Easter egg for him: a house on the western edge of Harmony contains a wanted poster using the exact art style Rockstar used to promote GTA 4, and both Lester Crest and Packie mention him by name in dialogue.
That precedent matters more for this article's premise than anything involving GTA 5's own trio, because it is the one instance where a GTA 4 character physically walked into a later game rather than just getting name-checked. If Rockstar repeats that trick for GTA 6, side players like Packie, Little Jacob, or one of the McReary brothers are more plausible walk-ons than the state's overexposed lead characters.
What the trailers have actually shown so far
Trailer analysis has to be handled carefully here, because "Easter egg" and "confirmed character" are not the same thing, and unconfirmed leaks or datamined files are not a legitimate source for anything in this piece. What the two official trailers do show:
- A rebranded can of Patriot beer, carried over visually from both GTA 4 and GTA 5, suggesting the in-game brand universe survives into Leonida.
- An Ammu-Nation commercial featuring a mulleted pitchman, which a lot of outlets have connected to Phil Cassidy from the older 3D-era games rather than anyone from GTA 5 or GTA 4 specifically, and even that reading is disputed since the character in the ad has both arms.
- A "Beware Of The Dog" sign with an animal that resembles Chop, which is circumstantial at best.
- A boat visible from Jason's house that some fans have tried to match to the boat Michael owns in GTA 5, a theory Rockstar has neither confirmed nor denied.
None of that amounts to a confirmed GTA 5 or GTA 4 character walking on screen. It does confirm that Rockstar's art and prop team is still drawing from the same well of in-universe brands, which is exactly the kind of connective tissue that has carried Lazlow, Weazel News and Ammu-Nation across every game since 2008.
The bottom line
Expect background nods before named cameos. Rockstar's own history says returning protagonists almost never get playable roles again, so Michael, Franklin and Trevor showing up as anything more than a radio mention or a framed photo would be a first for the series. Side characters with an existing cross-game precedent, especially anyone from the McReary family, have a much stronger case, and the brand-level Easter eggs (Patriot, Ammu-Nation, Weazel) are close to a certainty given they have never skipped a mainline game. Until Rockstar confirms anything directly, treat every "spotted" character in a screenshot as a theory, not a fact.
