Do GTA 5 Cheats Still Work in 2026? Every Platform Checked

Yes. Thirteen years after launch, every classic GTA 5 cheat code still works exactly as it did in 2013 - on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and the 2025 Enhanced & Expanded Edition. Rockstar has never removed or rebalanced the cheat system, and nothing in recent patches has touched it.

The essentials:

• Cheats only work in Story Mode. They have never worked in GTA Online, on any platform, at any point.
• The phone numbers, button combinations and PC console keywords are unchanged since the original 2013 release.
• The 2025 Enhanced & Expanded Edition ported the cheat system over untouched - same codes, same menus.
• Using a cheat disables Trophies/Achievements for the rest of that play session (a fresh reload restores them).
• Cheats carry zero ban risk, because they never touch the online, server-side game.

Why a 13-year-old cheat system never breaks

GTA 5's cheats are hard-coded into the single-player build of the game - they are not a network feature, a live-service system, or something tied to a backend Rockstar can patch out from under you. Punching in PAINKILLER on the phone or typing a keyword into the PC console triggers a local script that has shipped, unchanged, in every version of the game since September 2013.

Compare that to GTA Online, where Rockstar constantly closes money glitches and modded-lobby exploits (see our breakdown of GTA Online's glitch history and how Bad Sport punished cheaters starting in 2013). Those are patched aggressively because they affect a shared economy and other players. Story Mode cheats affect nobody but you, so there has never been a reason for Rockstar to touch them.

Does the Enhanced & Expanded Edition change anything?

No. When Rockstar shipped the Enhanced & Expanded Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the classic cheat menu came with it - same phone numbers, same controller inputs, same effects (invincibility, weapon sets, vehicle spawns, weather and gravity changes). The upgraded lighting and traffic density didn't touch the underlying cheat scripts at all. If you're moving from PS4/Xbox One to the Enhanced version, every code you already know still applies without modification.

The PC version behaves the same way: press the key to the left of "1" (usually the tilde ~) to open the developer console, type the cheat keyword in capital letters, and hit enter. It's the same console that's existed since the original PC release in 2015.

How to enter cheats on each platform, quickly

• PS4 / PS5: hold the button combination during active gameplay, without pausing, or dial the number on the in-game phone (press up on the d-pad to bring it up).
• Xbox One / Xbox Series X|S: same idea - button combo mid-gameplay, or dial the phone number.
• PC: open the console with the tilde key and type the keyword, or use the phone the same way console players do.

What still doesn't work (and never will)

• GTA Online, ever. No cheat code has functioned in the online mode since it launched in October 2013. This is by design, not an oversight - Online runs against Rockstar's servers, and any code that altered money, weapons or stats there would break the shared economy instantly.

• Saving mid-cheat. Some cheats block you from saving while active; turn them off first if you want to keep your progress.

Any risk to using them?

None, as long as you stay in Story Mode. Cheats are a local, offline feature - there's no server call, no flag on your account, and no ban risk. The only real cost is losing Trophy/Achievement progress for that session, which resets the moment you reload a save. That's a completely different situation from third-party trainers or mods, which can alter save files in ways the game doesn't expect and are outside the scope of what we cover here.
