How Long to Beat GTA 5: Main Story, Side Missions and 100% Completion

GTA 5's story mode takes about 32 hours if you stick to the main missions, around 51 hours if you mix in a healthy share of side content, and roughly 89 hours if you chase the full 100%. Those are the averages players have logged on HowLongToBeat, the crowd-sourced database most outlets quote, and they line up well with what the game itself asks of you: 69 story missions, a long tail of side activities and a 100% checklist that is lighter than its reputation.

Here is what each playstyle actually involves, what eats the most time, and how to plan your run so you do not waste a single evening.

The essentials:

  • Main story only: about 32 hours (69 missions, one of three endings)
  • Main story + extras: about 51 hours (heists done properly, Strangers and Freaks, a few hobbies)
  • 100% completion: about 89 hours on average, with the slowest logged runs past 130 hours
  • All playstyles combined: about 45 hours
  • Biggest time sink: the 100 collectibles (50 Spaceship Parts and 50 Letter Scraps)
  • Best time saver: picking Ending C so nothing becomes missable

Averages from player submissions on HowLongToBeat, read in October 2026. They shift slightly as new runs come in, and your own time will depend on how much you drive around between missions.

The gap between the first two lines is the interesting one. Almost twenty hours separate a player who only follows the yellow markers from one who stops to do Franklin's side jobs, a couple of races and the odd random event. That is not padding: a lot of what people remember about GTA 5 lives in that middle band.

Main story: about 32 hours

The campaign is made of 69 missions, from the snowy Prologue in North Yankton to the three-way finale. Every one of them has to be cleared to see the credits, including Lester's assassination contracts and the setup missions for each heist. If you want the full sequence and the choices that change what comes next, our list of every GTA 5 story mission in order maps it out.

What makes the 32-hour figure move:

  • Heist preparation. Each big job has a planning board and one or more setup missions. Taking the longer approach (the smart route on the Jewel Store Job, for instance) adds time but often pays better.
  • Travel. GTA 5 has no fast travel in the classic sense. Taxis help, and skipping the ride costs a few dollars, but most players drive. That alone accounts for hours.
  • Retries. A handful of missions, especially flying and chase sequences, are where most players lose time. Gold medal hunting can add several hours on its own.
  • Switching characters. Swapping between Michael, Franklin and Trevor shows you what each is doing, and you often get pulled into their latest scene. It is part of the fun, and part of the clock.

A focused player who skips cutscenes on retries and uses taxis can get close to 25 hours. A relaxed first playthrough, with plenty of free roaming, easily passes 40.

Your ending choice does not change the length of the story, since all three finales are a single mission. It matters later, though: Endings A and B lock content. More on that in our guide to GTA 5's three endings.

Main story + extras: about 51 hours

This is the most common way people play GTA 5, and the one we recommend for a first run. On top of the campaign, a typical "extras" playthrough includes:

  • Strangers and Freaks. There are 66 of these side missions across the three characters. They range from Barry's very strange errands to the Epsilon Program and the paparazzi jobs. Our Strangers and Freaks guide lists them all.
  • Hobbies and Pastimes. Flight School, the Shooting Range, street races, triathlons, tennis, golf and darts. Flight School and the Shooting Range are worth doing early: they raise flying and shooting stats permanently, which makes later missions easier.
  • Lester's assassinations and the stock market. Not side content strictly speaking, but timing them properly (and waiting for the market to move) is where many players spend extra in-game days.
  • Property buying. Businesses like the Los Santos Customs garage or the Vanilla Unicorn generate weekly income and come with short missions of their own.

Twenty extra hours sounds like a lot, but they spread naturally across the campaign. Most players do not sit down to "do side content": they drive past a blip, get curious, and suddenly it is 2am.

100% completion: about 89 hours

Hitting 100% means filling five weighted categories on the pause menu completion screen. The good news: you do not need to clear every single activity in the game. The targets are lower than the totals available.

CategoryWhat you need
Storyline missionsAll 69
Strangers and Freaks20 (Franklin's chain, which means playing all 24 of his regular ones)
Hobbies and Pastimes42 of 61
Random Events14
Miscellaneous16 of 30 tasks, including all 50 Spaceship Parts and all 50 Letter Scraps

Every requirement, and the tricks to tick them off faster, are in our GTA 5 100% completion checklist.

Where the extra 40 hours go

  • Collectibles (around 10 to 15 hours). The 50 Spaceship Parts and 50 Letter Scraps are the single biggest time sink. Some sit underwater, some on rooftops, some in the far corners of Blaine County. Doing them with a map, in one organised sweep per area, is much faster than hunting blind.
  • Hobbies and Pastimes (around 10 hours). You need 42 of 61, so you can skip whole activities you dislike. Golf and tennis are the usual casualties.
  • Strangers and Freaks (around 5 to 8 hours). Some of Franklin's only appear after certain story missions, which means checking back regularly.
  • Random Events (around 3 to 5 hours). Only 14 count, and they trigger naturally while you drive. The trap is waiting too long and having to go looking for them at the end.
  • Mopping up. Stunt jumps, under-the-bridge flights, knife flights and the last properties fill the remaining Miscellaneous slots.

The slowest completionist runs on record go past 130 hours. That usually comes from playing without a guide, missing a requirement and having to backtrack, or from going far beyond 100% (every stunt jump, every barrel of nuclear waste, every gold medal).

Does platform change how long GTA 5 takes?

Not really. The content is identical on PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. What changes is load time. The PS5 and Xbox Series versions, and the PC Enhanced edition, load much faster than the 2013 consoles, which shaves a little off every death, retry and fast travel by taxi. Over a full 100% run, that adds up to an hour or two at most.

Cheats are the other variable. They can speed up some activities (spawning a fast car, for example), but cheats disable trophies and achievements for the session, and they are best avoided on a save you care about.

How to finish GTA 5 faster (without skipping the good parts)

  1. Do Flight School and the Shooting Range early. Better stats mean fewer retries on the hardest missions.
  2. Use taxis for long trips. Skipping the ride is cheap and saves minutes every time.
  3. Keep Franklin's Strangers and Freaks up to date. Check his map after each story beat so you never have to backtrack.
  4. Pick Ending C if you want 100%. It keeps all three characters alive and nothing becomes permanently missable.
  5. Save collectibles for last, and do them by area. Two passes over the map beat a hundred separate trips.
  6. Do not chase gold medals on a first run. You can replay missions from the pause menu later.

At the other extreme, speedrunners finish the whole campaign in a fraction of the time, using routing, mission skips and glitches. Our piece on GTA 5 speedrun records and techniques explains how they do it.

And GTA 6?

GTA 6 is due on 19 November 2026, and Rockstar has not said how long its story will be. Everything about its length is an estimate based on GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, which ran noticeably longer than GTA 5 for its main story. We have collected those comparisons in how long GTA 6 could be. Until Rockstar confirms anything, treat any hour count you see as speculation.

FAQ

How many missions are in GTA 5? 69 story missions, plus 66 Strangers and Freaks side missions spread across Michael, Franklin and Trevor.

Can you finish GTA 5 in a weekend? The main story, yes, if you play around 15 hours a day. For most people, two to three weeks of evening sessions is more realistic.

Is 100% in GTA 5 hard? Not hard, just long. Nothing in the checklist requires exceptional skill, and gold medals are not part of it. Organisation matters more than reflexes.

Does GTA Online count toward 100%? No. The completion percentage only tracks story mode.
