Can You Play GTA 6 From an External Hard Drive? SSD, M.2 and Expansion Card Guide

You cannot play GTA 6 from a USB external hard drive. That is the short answer, and it applies to both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA 6 is a current-generation game, and both consoles only run current-generation games from fast internal storage: the built-in SSD, an M.2 SSD in the PS5's expansion slot, or an official expansion card on Xbox. An external USB drive is still useful, though, as a parking lot for everything else you want to keep installed. With launch on November 19, 2026 and an install that is widely estimated at 150 GB or more, now is the time to sort out your storage.

The essentials

  • External USB drive (HDD or SSD): cannot run GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. It can store other games and run PS4 or Xbox One titles.
  • PS5 M.2 SSD: yes, GTA 6 can be installed and played from a compatible PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive in the expansion slot.
  • Xbox storage expansion card: yes, the Seagate or WD_Black cards behave exactly like the internal SSD.
  • Official install size: not announced by Rockstar as of late October 2026. Most estimates sit between 150 and 200 GB, with a day-one patch on top.
  • The physical box changes nothing: it holds a download code, not a disc, so every copy is a full download.
  • Best move today: move older games to a USB drive and free at least 250 GB on internal storage before preload opens.

Why an external hard drive will not run GTA 6

Both console makers made the same choice this generation: games built for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S rely on the speed of the internal SSD to stream the world in, so they are not allowed to launch from a USB drive.

On PS5, Sony's own support page is explicit: PS5 games "can't be played directly from USB extended storage". You can store them there, but you have to copy them back to console storage before playing. On Xbox, games optimized for Series X|S need the Xbox Velocity Architecture, which only the internal SSD and the official expansion cards provide. A standard USB drive can play Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, and can hold Series X|S games as cold storage, nothing more.

GTA 6 is a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S exclusive at launch, with no PS4 or Xbox One version (see our breakdown of the platform question). That means there is no older, USB-friendly version to fall back on: the game has to live on fast internal storage.

How much space GTA 6 will need

Rockstar has not published an install size yet, and the figure usually appears on the stores around the time preload opens. Until then, every number is an estimate based on precedent. Red Dead Redemption 2 needed around 105 GB on PS4 at launch and more than 150 GB on PC. GTA 6 has two protagonists, a denser map and native current-gen assets, so the common estimate is 150 to 200 GB for the base game, plus a day-one patch that could add 30 to 50 GB. Our full breakdown is in the GTA 6 file size estimate.

Be wary of the screenshots claiming a 600 GB-plus install: those have been debunked, and such a figure would not even fit on a launch PS5.

Here is roughly what each console gives you after the system software takes its share:

ConsoleAdvertised storageUsable space (approx.)
PS5 (launch model)825 GBabout 667 GB
PS5 Slim1 TBabout 848 GB
PS5 Pro2 TBabout 1.8 TB
Xbox Series X1 TBabout 802 GB
Xbox Series S (512 GB)512 GBabout 364 GB
Xbox Series S (1 TB)1 TBabout 800 GB

The 512 GB Xbox Series S is the tight one: a 200 GB install would take more than half of its usable space. If you are on that console, our Series S expectations guide covers the rest of what to plan for.

Option 1: add an M.2 SSD to your PS5

Every PS5 model has an internal M.2 expansion slot, and a game installed there runs exactly like one on the built-in drive. This is the cleanest way to give GTA 6 room without deleting anything. Sony's requirements are strict, so check them before buying:

  • Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, M.2 Key M. SATA M.2 drives do not work.
  • Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
  • Speed: sequential read of 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended.
  • Form factor: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
  • Size with cooling: up to 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick in total.
  • Cooling: a heatsink is required. Many drives sold as "PS5 compatible" come with one already fitted; do not add a second.

How to install it

  1. Update your PS5 system software first.
  2. Power the console off completely and unplug it.
  3. Remove the cover (the method differs between the launch model and the Slim/Pro, Sony's guide shows both) and unscrew the expansion slot cover.
  4. Slide the SSD in, secure it with the screw and put everything back together.
  5. Turn the PS5 on: it will prompt you to format the drive. The whole drive is formatted, so back up anything on it first.
  6. In Settings > Storage > Installation Location, choose the M.2 SSD for PS5 games if you want GTA 6 to land there automatically.

A 1 TB or 2 TB drive is the sweet spot for most players. Prices for SSDs moved a lot in 2026, so compare a few retailers rather than trusting a "list price".

Option 2: the Xbox storage expansion card

Xbox Series X and Series S have a dedicated storage expansion port on the back. The officially licensed cards, made by Seagate and WD_Black (the C50), plug in like a memory card and run Series X|S games at full speed, GTA 6 included. They come in 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB versions.

You cannot use a generic M.2 SSD on Xbox: only these licensed cards are supported in that port. If the console does not see the card, check Settings > System > Storage, reseat it after 30 seconds and restart.

Option 3: use an external USB drive the smart way

Even though it cannot run GTA 6, an external drive is the cheapest way to make room for it. The idea is to move everything else off the internal SSD.

On PS5, the drive needs SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, a capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB, and a direct connection (no USB hub). Once formatted as USB extended storage, you can:

  • move PS5 games there to store them, and copy them back later in a few minutes instead of redownloading;
  • install and play PS4 games directly from it;
  • keep GTA 6 on the internal SSD or M.2 drive.

On Xbox, a USB 3.0 drive of 128 GB or more works the same way: Xbox One and older games play from it, Series X|S games are stored there and moved back when you want them.

Copying a game back from USB is usually far faster than downloading it again, especially for big titles like Call of Duty or GTA 5.

How to free up space before November 19

If you would rather not buy anything, a quick clean-up often does the job:

  1. Check what is eating your storage. On PS5: Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, sorted by size. On Xbox: My games & apps > Manage.
  2. Delete or archive the biggest games you are not playing. Your saves stay in the cloud (PS Plus or Xbox cloud saves) and on the console, not inside the game install.
  3. Clear media. Screenshots and video clips can quietly take tens of gigabytes on PS5.
  4. Remove optional add-ons. Some games let you delete campaign or multiplayer packs you no longer use.
  5. Aim for 250 GB free on the drive where GTA 6 will go, to cover the base game, the day-one patch and some breathing room for updates.

Our pre-launch console checklist covers the rest of the prep: system updates, account checks and download settings.

When to do it

Do it before preload opens. Preload is the moment to download the game files ahead of launch, so they are ready to unlock in your store region (see our GTA 6 preload guide). If your console is full at that point, the download will stall and you will be clearing space in a hurry. Sort the storage now, and preload becomes a simple overnight download.

FAQ

Can I play GTA 6 from an external SSD plugged into USB? No. Speed is not the issue: even a fast external SSD over USB is blocked from running PS5 and Xbox Series X|S games. It can only store them.

Is a PS5 M.2 SSD slower than the internal drive for GTA 6? With a drive that meets Sony's recommended 5,500 MB/s, you should not notice a difference. Sony notes that some games may not match the internal SSD exactly, so stick to a well-reviewed drive with a heatsink.

Does the physical edition save space or download time? No. The box contains a download code, so you download the full game either way.

Can I move GTA 6 to a USB drive after launch to make room for something else? Yes, you can store it there and copy it back later. You just cannot play it while it sits on the USB drive.
