Can You Enter Buildings in GTA 6? What Rockstar Told Bloomberg About Interiors

Can You Enter Buildings in GTA 6? What Rockstar Told Bloomberg About Interiors

Will GTA 6 finally let you walk into the buildings you drive past? For the first time, Rockstar has answered on the record. In a behind-the-scenes feature published by Bloomberg on October 16, 2026, the studio told reporter Jason Schreier that the game has "hundreds" of small interiors to explore. That is a real statement, and it is a big one. But it is also a lot vaguer than the numbers you will see shared on social media. Here is what Rockstar actually said, what the official trailers show, what stays a rumor, and what we can reasonably expect when the game unlocks on November 19.

The essentials:

  • What Rockstar said: "There's so many of these little interiors - hundreds of them - that you can go and explore," according to Bloomberg's report.
  • Who said it: Rockstar's head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe and development leads Aaron Garbut, Phil Hooker and Rob Nelson spoke to Bloomberg for the feature.
  • What was demoed: a gym, a bank the player chose not to rob, and a gas station back office where an alarm was disarmed.
  • What is NOT confirmed: an exact number of enterable buildings, a percentage of the map, or that every building can be entered.
  • Our rule: precise counts circulating online come from unverified sources, not from Rockstar. We do not repeat them.

What Rockstar told Bloomberg

The Bloomberg piece is a newsletter feature built around a studio visit and a hands-on demonstration. Several outlets, including GamingBolt and MP1st, summarized it within days, and they agree on the key line: Rockstar describes "so many of these little interiors - hundreds of them - that you can go and explore."

Two words in that sentence matter.

  • "Hundreds" is an order of magnitude, not a count. It could mean 150 or 900. Rockstar chose not to give a figure, and nothing in the report narrows it down.
  • "Little" is a hint about scale. Rockstar is not promising that every skyscraper in Vice City has 40 furnished floors. It is talking about shops, bars, offices, back rooms and homes: the kind of spaces you step into for a minute, look around, and leave.

That is still a major change for the series. In GTA 5, the vast majority of Los Santos was a facade. You could enter a recurring set of businesses (24/7 stores, Ammu-Nation, clothing shops, barbers, tattoo parlors, Los Santos Customs), your safehouses, and a handful of places tied to missions. Most of the rest of the city was a wall with a door painted on it.

What the demo showed

According to the coverage of the Bloomberg feature, Rob Nelson played the demo with a controller as Jason, called Lucia to hang out, and moved the pair through a string of everyday locations:

  • A gym, where Jason did squats while Lucia ran on a treadmill.
  • A bank, which the player scouted and decided not to rob because there were too many guards.
  • A gas station, where the pair slipped into the back office, disarmed the alarm and took the cash without alerting anyone.

The point of that sequence is not the loot. It is that each place was a functioning interior you can walk into from the street, look around, and make a decision in. The bank scene is a good example: the interior exists before any mission asks you to rob it, and the guards inside are what make you change your mind. That idea connects directly to the hold-up system we covered in our guide to store and gas station robberies in GTA 6.

"Every room" was thought about: the Garbut angle

In separate press coverage this autumn, Rockstar North's Aaron Garbut described how much attention goes into each room, down to "who's sitting where, what they're drinking, the marks that are left on the table." Reports of a New York Times interview add that every room in the game had someone thinking about it individually, rather than being filled by a generic template.

Take that for what it is: a statement of intent about craftsmanship, quoted second-hand. It does not tell us how many rooms there are, and it does not say that every one of them is open to the player at all times. What it does suggest is that Rockstar is applying the hand-built approach of Red Dead Redemption 2 to a modern city, which matches what the official trailers have shown since 2023.

What the official trailers already showed

You do not need a leak to see that interiors are a bigger deal this time. Rockstar's own videos are full of them:

  • Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 spent plenty of time indoors: a convenience store hold-up, nightclubs, homes and other everyday spaces.
  • The Extended Look, released in late August 2026 and captured in-game on PS5, showed the hold-up system playing out inside a store with counters, cameras and several exits, plus a dense flow of ambient life. We broke down that footage in our article on random world events in the Extended Look.
  • The launch trailer, released on October 15, mixed interior and exterior shots in its 90 seconds. Our launch trailer breakdown lists everything it shows.

What none of these videos prove is how you get inside. Trailers are edited, and a cut can hide a loading screen. Bloomberg's account of the demo, where the characters moved between locations without cutting to a menu, is the best hint we have that the transitions are seamless. It is a hint, not a technical guarantee.

What remains a rumor

Since 2022, figures have circulated claiming a precise number of enterable buildings, or a percentage of the map you can walk into. Some sites present those numbers as confirmed. They are not.

  • No Rockstar statement gives a count. The only official word is "hundreds."
  • Rockstar has never said that every building is enterable. Expect plenty of closed doors, especially on residential streets and tall towers.
  • Rockstar has not said whether every interior is open in free roam. In GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, some interiors only opened during missions or activities, and some only at certain times of day.

Some of those figures are attributed online to the 2022 leak of early development footage. 6cheats does not report on leaked or datamined material: it was shown without Rockstar's consent, it reflected a build years from release, and it is not a reliable guide to the final game.

What to expect, based on GTA 5 and RDR2

Everything in this section is expectation, not fact. It is based on how Rockstar's last two open worlds worked and on what has been shown officially.

Businesses will be the backbone

Shops, diners, bars and gas stations are the most likely interiors to be enterable at any time, because they serve gameplay: buying, eating, robbing, hiding from the police. The demo's gas station and bank fit that pattern. Expect a large share of the "hundreds" to be places where you can spend or take money.

Homes and properties will be curated

Rockstar has not detailed how property ownership works. In GTA 5, safehouses and a short list of purchasable businesses had interiors. If GTA 6 lets you buy real estate, those interiors will matter a lot more. We look at the possibilities in our guide can you buy houses in GTA 6.

Some places will be mission-only

Big landmark interiors, like a bank vault or a mansion, are expensive to build and easy to break in free roam. Rockstar has often kept them locked until a mission needs them. Expect the same here, especially for heist targets. Our article on how GTA 6 heists could work goes through that logic.

The map is bigger, so density is relative

Hundreds of interiors spread across Vice City and the rest of Leonida will not feel like a building-by-building simulation. Rural regions will have fewer, and downtown more. For context on the scale involved, see our comparison of the GTA 6 map size vs GTA 5 and RDR2.

The bottom line

The question "can you enter buildings in GTA 6?" now has an official answer: yes, a lot more than before, with "hundreds" of interiors according to Rockstar. The exact number, which buildings, and when they are open are still unknown, and anyone giving you a precise count is relying on something other than Rockstar. The real answer arrives with the game on November 19, 2026, at midnight in your store's time zone. We will update this guide with what we can confirm once it is out.
