Do You Need ID to Play GTA 6? The Age Verification Rumor, Fact-Checked
No, Rockstar has not announced any ID check to play GTA 6. But UK and Australian players may have to prove their age to use online features. What is confirmed, what is not.

Will you have to show a passport or a driving licence before you can play GTA 6? The rumor has been everywhere since the summer, usually with a scary headline about face scans. The short answer, as of 3 November 2026: no, Rockstar has not announced any ID check to play GTA 6. But in two countries, the UK and Australia, an age check is very likely to stand between you and some online features. Here is what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what you can ignore.
The essentials
- Rockstar has made no official announcement of an ID or age check for GTA 6. Nothing on the Rockstar Newswire, nothing on the store pages.
- The single-player story should not need any ID. Every report so far ties age checks to online features, not to the campaign.
- In the UK and Ireland, PlayStation and Xbox already ask adult accounts to verify their age to keep voice and text chat. That applies to every game, GTA 6 included.
- In Australia, rules in force since 9 March 2026 require age assurance for online games classified R18+. If GTA 6's online side lands in that category, Rockstar will have to check ages there.
- In France, the US and most of the world, no law currently forces a game publisher to check your ID before you play.
- An ID document is only one option among several: the platforms also accept a phone contract check or a face-based age estimate.
Where the rumor comes from
The story has three separate roots, which often get blended into one headline.
1. The GTA Online leak (August 2025). A Rockstar leaker known as Tez2 shared screenshots from the PS5 version of GTA Online showing a prompt: "Please verify your age to access online features." The leaker said it was not active yet and would roll out region by region. Rockstar never commented. Since GTA 6 will have online features, outlets such as Push Square drew the obvious conclusion that a similar check could follow. That is a reasonable guess, not a confirmation, and we do not amplify the leaked material beyond what the press already reported.
2. The UK Online Safety Act. British law now requires "highly effective age assurance" for online services where adults and children can interact. Xbox started asking UK players to verify their age in July 2025, and PlayStation followed in the UK and Ireland in 2026. These are platform rules, not GTA rules, but they will affect anyone playing GTA 6 online in those countries.
3. Australia's age-restricted material codes. In July 2026, Australian outlets reported that GTA 6 players there might need a driving licence. The background is real: since 9 March 2026, online games classified R18+ in Australia must check that users are adults, with civil penalties reported at up to AU$49.5 million. The "driving licence" part was a simplification: it is one accepted method, not a requirement.
The face scan version of the rumor ("GTA 6 will scan your face to prove your age") is the least reliable of the lot. Face-based age estimation does exist on PlayStation and Xbox in the UK, but it is an optional method offered by the console, not something Rockstar has said it will build into the game.
What is confirmed, country by country
| Country | Is there an age check? | Who runs it | What it gates |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Yes, on consoles | Sony and Microsoft (via Yoti) | Voice chat, text chat, parties, broadcasting |
| Ireland | Yes, on PlayStation | Sony (via Yoti) | Same communication features |
| Australia | Required for R18+ online games | The service itself (Rockstar, if applicable) | Access to age-restricted online content |
| France and the EU | No game-specific law | - | Nothing for now |
| United States and Canada | No federal requirement | - | Nothing for now |
This table describes the situation as we read it on 3 November 2026. Laws and platform policies move fast, so treat it as a snapshot.
What happens if you refuse to verify on PS5 or Xbox
This is the part most headlines skip. On PlayStation, Sony's own FAQ for the UK and Ireland is explicit: unverified adult accounts can still play games, use the PlayStation Store and every non-communication feature. What they lose is voice chat, messaging, parties, Discord voice through the console and broadcasting to Twitch or YouTube. Some games can also restrict their own in-game chat for unverified users.
Xbox works the same way. If you skip verification in the UK, you keep your games and your existing friends, but you can no longer talk by voice or text to players outside your friends list.
So in the UK, the realistic worst case for GTA 6 is this: you buy the game, you play the story, you probably join GTA 6's online side, but you play muted towards strangers until you verify. Nobody has reported a plan to lock the game itself behind an ID.
How the verification actually works
Both console makers use the British company Yoti. You verify once per account, and you usually get three choices:
- Mobile phone check: you confirm a contract phone number in your name. Pay as you go numbers are not accepted on PlayStation.
- Face-based age estimate: you take a selfie in good light and the system estimates your age. Sony says the facial data is deleted once the check is done and that PlayStation only receives the result.
- ID document: passport, driving licence or national ID card.
If handing over an ID bothers you, the phone check or the age estimate are the less intrusive routes. Our guide to parental controls on PS5 and Xbox covers the other side of the same settings, for parents of teenagers.
And Rockstar's own account?
You will need a Rockstar Games account to link to GTA 6, and creating one asks for a date of birth, not a document. We explain the account side in detail in do you need a Rockstar Games account for GTA 6. If Rockstar does switch on the age check spotted in GTA Online, it would most likely sit on top of that account, region by region, starting where the law demands it.
Why France is (for now) unaffected
PEGI 18, the rating GTA 6 is widely expected to carry in Europe, is a recommendation for buyers, not a legal ban on minors playing. France has passed age-verification rules, but they target adult websites, not video games. So a French player should not expect any ID prompt from Rockstar at launch. For the full picture, read our pieces on what age you can legally play GTA 6 and on whether GTA 6 is banned in France.
Online at launch: does any of this matter on 19 November?
It depends on what is actually online on day one. Rockstar has been careful about what GTA 6's multiplayer will look like at launch, and we keep track of it in will GTA 6 have multiplayer at launch. If the online side arrives later, the age-check question may only really come up then. If it is there on day one, UK and Australian players should expect the console or game prompt on their first session.
What to do before launch
- UK and Ireland: verify your PSN or Xbox account now if you want voice chat on launch night. It takes a few minutes, and you will not be fighting a queue on the 19th.
- Australia: watch for the official classification of GTA 6 and any notice from Rockstar. Until then, the driving licence headlines are speculation.
- Everywhere else: nothing to do. Ignore anyone selling "verified accounts" or asking for your ID by email or DM in the name of Rockstar: that is a scam, not a check.
Our verdict on the rumor
Partly true, mostly overblown. Nobody needs ID to play GTA 6 as a game. Some players, in some countries, will be asked to prove their age to use online communication features, and that check comes from Sony, Microsoft or local law at least as much as from Rockstar. We will update this page the moment Rockstar says anything official.
