Taking a Day Off for GTA 6: PTO, Annual Leave and the "GTA Flu" Explained

GTA 6 launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026, and a lot of people want that day off. Take-Two's own CEO saw it coming: "I think a lot of people will be calling in sick on November 19," Strauss Zelnick joked at the iicon conference in April. The good news is that you do not need a fake cough. With a little planning, a launch-day day off is one of the easiest leave requests you will ever make.

This guide covers how to take time off for GTA 6 the right way: when to ask, what the rules are in the US, the UK and France, what the surveys say about the so-called "GTA flu", and how to get the most out of the days you book.

The essentials

  • Launch day: Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game unlocks at midnight in your store's time zone, so many players can start on the night of the 18th.
  • Best combo: Thursday plus Friday off gives you a four-day weekend for one or two days of leave.
  • Ask now: the request is two weeks away. In the UK, the legal minimum notice for one day of leave is just two days, but your employer can still say no.
  • Do not fake it: calling in sick to play a game can be treated as misconduct, and in France a one-day sick note is usually unpaid anyway.
  • Pre-load first: pre-load opens November 10, so the 212 GB download is done before your day off starts.

Why everyone is talking about the "GTA flu"

The "GTA flu" is the joke name for the wave of sudden illnesses expected on launch morning. It is not new: back in 2013, an IGN reader poll about GTA 5 found that close to half of respondents had booked the day off, and roughly one in five planned to call in sick. That poll was self-selected, so treat it as a mood, not a statistic.

In 2026, the numbers are more serious, though still about intentions rather than actual absences:

SourceWho was askedKey figure
BambooHR platform data (Oct 2026)3.4 million US employeesLeave requests for Nov 19 about 13% higher than the same Thursday in 2024-2025; Friday Nov 20 about 11% higher
BambooHR survey (Oct 9-20, 2026)1,530 US full-time workers18% plan to take the day off (32% of Gen Z)
GameSquare survey (Oct 2026)1,000 US full-time employees who game10% plan to skip work; 36% of those considering time off would call in sick
One Day Agency via YouGov (UK)1,000 UK adults7% plan to book Nov 19 off; 2% expect to call in sick

BambooHR also recorded an 8.3% lift in leave requests for November 19 in the UK and 6.6% in Canada. One caveat: general leave requests rose 2-4% in 2026 anyway, so not all of that spike is GTA.

The headline you may have seen, "a $1 billion sick day with 1.5 million absent workers", is an economic projection, not a measurement. Nobody will know the real figure until after the launch, if ever.

Step 1: pick the right days

Before you send anything to your manager, decide what you actually want.

The night of the 18th. GTA 6 unlocks at midnight in your store's time zone, not at one global moment. In the US and Canada that means midnight New York time, which is 9 PM on the 18th on the West Coast. Check the exact time for your region in our GTA 6 release time by timezone guide. If you plan to play from midnight, Thursday off is less a luxury and more a necessity.

Thursday the 19th. The obvious one. Note that launch day is also when servers are busiest, so the first hours can be bumpy. Our article on what to do if GTA 6 won't launch at midnight covers the usual fixes.

Friday the 20th. The smart one. Thursday plus Friday turns two days of leave into a four-day weekend, from Wednesday night to Sunday night. The BambooHR data shows plenty of people had the same idea, which matters if your team has a cap on how many people can be off at once.

Half days and shift swaps. If a full day is impossible, a morning off after a midnight session, a late start, or a swapped shift are all easier to get approved. In the UK survey, more people planned to adjust their hours (8%) or swap shifts (6%) than to book the whole day.

Step 2: ask early, and in writing

The single most useful thing you can do is ask now. Teams often limit how many people can be off on the same day, and approvals usually go to whoever asked first. A few practical tips:

  • Use the official channel. HR software, email, the leave form: whatever your workplace uses. A verbal "yeah, should be fine" is not an approval.
  • You do not have to say why. "Personal day" is a complete reason. If your manager is a gamer too, mentioning GTA 6 might even help.
  • Offer cover. Finishing a deadline early or arranging for a colleague to handle urgent requests makes a yes much easier.
  • Get the confirmation. Keep the approval email or screenshot. If plans change later, you have proof.

The rules by country

Leave rules depend on your contract, your company policy and, where they apply, collective agreements. Here is the general picture.

United States

There is no federal law that requires paid vacation in the US. Paid time off is set by your employer's policy and, in some states and cities, by local paid leave laws. In practice, that means your employee handbook decides how much notice you need and whether a request can be refused. Many companies run blackout periods around busy seasons, and mid-November is close to the retail rush, so check early.

United Kingdom

Under the Working Time Regulations, unless your contract says otherwise, you must give notice of at least twice the length of the leave: two days' notice for one day off. Your employer can refuse, but must tell you with notice at least as long as the leave requested. Your contract or company policy can set different notice periods, and many do. Asking two weeks ahead is well inside any reasonable rule.

France

French workers have paid leave (congés payés) and often RTT days. The employer sets the order of departures and, under article L3141-16 of the Labour Code, generally cannot change approved leave dates less than one month before departure, except in exceptional circumstances. That cuts both ways: once your November 19 leave is approved, it is well protected. Our French edition goes into the detail of RTT and congés payés.

Step 3: why calling in sick is a bad idea

We understand the temptation. Here is why the "GTA flu" is a worse deal than it looks:

  • It can cost you your job. Faking illness is dishonest, and in most places it can be treated as misconduct. When half the internet jokes about launch-day sick days, your manager knows exactly what that cough means.
  • Social media is not your friend. A "first hour in Vice City" story posted at 10 AM on a sick day is the classic way people get caught.
  • It may not even be paid. Many sick pay schemes have waiting days. In France, for instance, the state sick pay usually kicks in only after three waiting days in the private sector, so a one-day sick note often costs you a day's salary.
  • It hurts the people who are actually sick. Fake sick days make managers suspicious of real ones.

A booked day off costs you one day of leave and zero stress. That is the better deal.

Step 4: make the day off count

You have the day. Do not waste it waiting for a progress bar.

  • Pre-load before the day. Pre-load opens on November 10 and needs 212 GB on PS5 and Xbox. See everything Rockstar confirmed about the GTA 6 pre-load.
  • Prepare your console the week before. System update, storage, TV settings, controller charged: our pre-launch checklist for PS5 and Xbox covers it all.
  • Mute spoilers. Some players will be hours ahead of you, especially in time zones that unlock first. Our guide on how to avoid GTA 6 spoilers lists the filters to set up.
  • Plan breaks and sleep. A midnight start plus a full day is a long session. Eat, hydrate and stand up now and then.
  • Do not plan to finish it. Even with four days off, a game of this scale will not be over by Monday. Enjoy the opening hours instead of rushing them.

FAQ

Can my employer refuse my day off for GTA 6? Usually yes, for business reasons, within the rules of your contract and local law. The reason you give does not matter much; timing and team coverage do. That is why asking early helps.

Is it better to take Thursday or Friday? Both if you can. If you only get one, Thursday is the launch, but Friday gives you a long weekend after a midnight start. Pick based on whether you plan to play at midnight.

Can I work from home and play during lunch? Only if your job and your manager are fine with it, and only during actual breaks. Playing during working hours while remote is still not working.

Is the "GTA flu" a real thing? As a joke and a survey topic, yes. As a measured wave of absences, nobody knows yet. Current surveys measure intentions, not real sick days.

The short version: book Thursday and Friday now, in writing, then spend the week before pre-loading and preparing your console. Vice City will be waiting.
