GTA 6 Pre-Load Starts November 10: 212 GB Required, What Rockstar Confirmed for PS5 and Xbox
Rockstar moved GTA 6 pre-loading up to November 10 and confirmed an install of up to 212 GB. Start times on PS5 and Xbox, whether it fits on your console, and what to do before the download opens.

GTA 6 pre-loading starts two days earlier than planned. Rockstar announced on November 3 that digital pre-orders can start downloading on Tuesday, November 10, not November 12 as announced back in June. The install needs up to 212 GB of free space depending on your console, and code-in-box copies reach shops from November 12. Here is everything Rockstar confirmed, what it means on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and what to do before the download opens.
The essentials
- Pre-load date: Tuesday, November 10, 2026, for digital pre-orders (previously November 12).
- PS5 start time: midnight local time, in your own time zone. New Zealand gets it first.
- Xbox Series X|S start time: one global moment, 12am GMT on November 10. That is 4pm PT / 7pm ET on Monday, November 9, and 1am in Paris.
- Storage: up to 212 GB, depending on the device.
- Code-in-box copies: on sale at retailers from November 12. There is no game disc in the box.
- Launch: unchanged, November 19, 2026, at midnight in your store's time zone.
- PC: still no date.
What Rockstar announced on November 3
The news came in a short post from Rockstar on X: "Grand Theft Auto VI pre-load begins on November 10", followed by a reminder that there is "still time to pre-order". The studio paired it with the platform-by-platform start times and the file size, which several outlets, including VGC and Shacknews, relayed the same day.
Two things changed compared with what we knew:
- The date moved forward. The June pre-order announcement pointed to November 12. Digital buyers now get a nine-day window before launch instead of a seven-day one. Some store pages may still display the old date for a while; Rockstar's own post is the reference.
- The size is now official. Until now, every figure in circulation was an estimate. 212 GB is the number to plan around, and it is an upper bound: Rockstar says the exact size depends on the device.
If you read our GTA 6 preload guide earlier this autumn, the November 12 date in older coverage is the one that changed. The install steps themselves are the same.
Pre-load times on PS5 and Xbox
The two platforms do not unlock the download the same way, and that matters if you want to start the moment it opens.
| Platform | When pre-load opens | Example times |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 / PS5 Pro | Midnight local time on Nov 10 | 12am Nov 10 in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Sydney |
| Xbox Series X and S | 12am GMT on Nov 10, worldwide | 4pm PT / 7pm ET Nov 9, 12am London, 1am Paris, 11am Sydney |
On PS5, it rolls around the globe with the clock. Players in New Zealand and Australia start hours before anyone in Europe, and the Americas come last.
On Xbox, everyone starts at the same instant. That is good news for North America, where the download opens on Monday evening, a few hours before PS5 players in the same city.
Pre-load only concerns the download. The game itself stays locked until launch, and the launch follows a different rule again: midnight in your store's time zone, not a single global time. Our page on GTA 6 release time in every timezone has the full table.
212 GB: will it fit on your console?
Here is how much space each current console actually gives you once the system software is installed. These are approximate usable figures for the default internal drive.
| Console | Advertised storage | Roughly usable | 212 GB install |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (launch model) | 825 GB | about 667 GB | Fits, but takes about a third |
| PS5 Slim | 1 TB | about 848 GB | Fits |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | about 1.8 TB | Fits easily |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | about 802 GB | Fits |
| Xbox Series S (512 GB) | 512 GB | about 364 GB | Fits, but leaves little room |
| Xbox Series S (1 TB) | 1 TB | about 802 GB | Fits |
Keep two practical points in mind:
- Leave headroom. Consoles often need extra temporary space while installing and applying updates, and a launch-day patch is common for big releases. Rockstar has not detailed one for GTA 6, but planning for more than 212 GB free is the safe move.
- The Series S is the tight one. On a 512 GB model, GTA 6 alone takes well over half of the usable space. Expect to uninstall most other games.
Rockstar's "depending on device" wording suggests the download will differ between consoles, as it often does when a game ships different asset sets for different hardware. We will only know each exact figure when the pre-load opens and the console displays it.
Our earlier GTA 6 file size estimate walks through how to free space quickly, and if you are thinking of expanding storage, the external hard drive and SSD guide explains which drives can store the game and which can actually run it.
Who can pre-load
Pre-loading is for digital pre-orders made on the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store. If you bought from a retailer, it depends on what you received:
- A digital code bought online: redeem it on your console's store as soon as you get it, and the pre-load becomes available like any digital pre-order.
- A code-in-box copy: these go on sale from November 12. There is no disc inside, only a download code, so the box does not save you the 212 GB download. Once you redeem the code you can start downloading. Rockstar has not changed anything else about the boxed edition.
Anyone who has not pre-ordered yet can still do it: the pre-load becomes available on your account as soon as the purchase goes through, as long as it is after the opening time for your platform.
What to do before November 10
The download is big and the servers will be busy. A few minutes of preparation saves a frustrating evening.
- Free up at least 212 GB now, plus a margin. Do it this week rather than on the night.
- Turn on automatic downloads. On PS5, check that the console is allowed to download in rest mode. On Xbox, set the energy mode that keeps updates and game downloads running in standby.
- Use a wired connection if you can. Over Wi-Fi, 212 GB on a typical connection can take many hours.
- Check your pre-order is tied to the right account, especially if several people share the console.
- Install system updates in advance, so your console is not stuck on a firmware download when the pre-load opens.
Our pre-launch console checklist goes through each setting step by step.
How long will the download take?
It depends entirely on your connection and how busy the stores' servers are on the night. As a rough guide, on a steady 100 Mbps line a 212 GB download needs around five hours in ideal conditions. On 50 Mbps, count about ten. Real speeds on the opening night of one of the most anticipated games ever are likely to be lower, which is exactly why Rockstar opens the pre-load nine days ahead. There is no rush: starting on November 11 or 12 still gives you a full week.
What we still do not know
- The exact size per console, beyond the 212 GB upper limit.
- Whether there will be a launch-day patch, and how large it would be.
- The PC release date, which Rockstar has still not announced.
Rockstar also confirmed a small launch-day extra: a printable cover art poster and a map of Leonida will be offered as a free digital download on its website on November 19, with a double-sided printed poster sold on the Rockstar Store shortly after launch.
We will update this article as soon as the stores show the final download sizes.
