How to Upgrade GTA 6 From Standard to Ultimate Edition on PS5 and Xbox: Price and Steps

Yes, you can go from the Standard Edition of GTA 6 to the Ultimate Edition without buying the game twice. Rockstar sells an Ultimate Edition Upgrade as a separate add-on on the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store. The Microsoft Store lists it at $20.00 / 20.00 EUR / 20.00 GBP, exactly the gap between the Standard ($79.99) and Ultimate ($99.99) editions. On PS5, the upgrade appears on the store but its price has so far only been shown to Standard owners. This guide covers what the upgrade costs, how to buy it on each console, and the traps to avoid before the November 19, 2026 launch.

The essentials

  • What it is: a paid add-on that turns a Standard copy into the Ultimate Edition, with all of the Ultimate's extra content.
  • Price: $20.00 on Xbox (20.00 EUR in Europe, 20.00 GBP in the UK). The PlayStation price had not been shown publicly when we checked; expect the same $20 gap, but confirm on the store.
  • When: Rockstar says Standard owners can upgrade "at any time" once they own the game.
  • Physical owners: the box holds a download code, not a disc. Redeem it first, then buy the upgrade on your console's digital store.
  • No physical Ultimate: Rockstar says the Ultimate Edition is not sold as a physical product.
  • Platform-locked: an upgrade bought on PS5 stays on PlayStation, and one bought on Xbox stays on Xbox.

What the upgrade actually unlocks

The upgrade gives a Standard owner the same content as someone who bought the Ultimate Edition outright. Rockstar describes it as a collection of "premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story." In practice that means:

  • Vehicles: the '95 Grotti Cheetah, the '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy, the Shitzu Squalo boat, and safehouse vehicles for Jason.
  • Weapons: the Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers and personalized pistols for both protagonists.
  • Garage and mods: the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay, a Ganado Retro Build modkit, and two mod shops, Rideout Customs and One-Eyed Willie's.
  • Shops: Sara's Unisex Salon, the Stock 305 clothing store and Electric Fang Tattoo.
  • Two exclusive missions, including Wyman's Classic Car Collection, which we detail in our Wyman car collection guide.

The base game does not change: same story, same map of Leonida, same performance. The shops are the part that drew the most criticism, and we break down that debate in the Ultimate-only shops explained. If you are still choosing, our Standard or Ultimate comparison puts both editions side by side.

Price: Standard plus upgrade vs Ultimate

Ultimate Edition Upgrade (Microsoft Store)$20.0020.00 EUR20.00 GBP
Standard + upgrade total$99.9999.99 EURsame as Ultimate

On Xbox, the two routes cost exactly the same. Upgrading later is not a penalty, it simply splits the payment in two. The only way to pay less is a discount on the Standard Edition at a retailer, which then leaves the $20 upgrade on top.

Note that PlayStation Store prices are set per region and can differ slightly. Before you pay, open the upgrade's listing on your own regional store: that figure is the one that counts.

How to buy the upgrade on PS5

The steps below follow the way the PlayStation Store handles add-ons for any game. Menu names can shift slightly with system updates.

  1. Own the Standard Edition on your account. Digital buyers already do. Physical buyers must first redeem the code from the box: on PS5, open the PlayStation Store, select the "..." menu at the top, then "Redeem code".
  2. Open the game's add-ons. From the PS5 home screen, highlight Grand Theft Auto VI, open its game hub, then the "..." button and "View product" or the add-ons section. You can also search the PlayStation Store for "Grand Theft Auto VI Ultimate Edition Upgrade".
  3. Check the price, which should now be shown since you own the base game.
  4. Buy it with your wallet funds or card. The content downloads as part of the game; you may need to restart the game to see it.

The PlayStation Store marks the upgrade as "not eligible" for the pre-order offer. That does not matter much: the Vintage Vice City Pack comes with the base game itself when bought before November 20, 2026, so you keep it either way.

How to buy the upgrade on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Own the Standard Edition. For a boxed copy, redeem the code through the Microsoft Store app ("Redeem" in your profile) or on the Microsoft redeem website.
  2. Go to the game's page. Open "My games & apps", highlight Grand Theft Auto VI, press the Menu button, then "Manage game and add-ons", or simply search for the game in the Microsoft Store.
  3. Pick "Ultimate Edition Upgrade" among the add-ons. It is listed at $20.00 in the US.
  4. Buy and install. The add-on attaches to the game you already have.

Should you upgrade now, at launch, or later?

The answer depends on where you are.

  • You have not bought anything yet: if you already know you want the extras, buying the Ultimate Edition directly is simpler, and the price is the same. If you are unsure, start on Standard: you lose nothing by waiting.
  • You pre-ordered Standard digitally: you can usually buy the upgrade once you own the game. If you would rather have the Ultimate from day one, check the store's rules before cancelling a pre-order; our cancel and refund guide covers the PS5 and Xbox conditions.
  • You bought the box: the code works from release. Redeem it, then decide calmly after a few hours of play.
  • You want to test first: the two exclusive missions and the shops unlock as you progress through the story, so playing the first chapters on Standard is a reasonable way to judge whether the extras matter to you.

The traps to avoid

  • Third-party "upgrade keys": the upgrade is sold on the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store. Grey-market sites selling cheap "GTA 6 Ultimate keys" carry a real risk of revoked or regional codes. Those codes cannot be refunded by Sony or Microsoft if they are revoked, so the official store is the safest bet.
  • Wrong platform: an upgrade bought on PS5 will not appear on Xbox, and the reverse. There is no announced cross-buy between consoles.
  • Wrong region: a boxed copy or wallet card from another region may not work on your account. Stay in your own store region.
  • Store credit is fine: paying with a PlayStation or Xbox gift card bought from a regular retailer is legitimate. In Germany, Amazon even sold a bundle of the Standard Edition with a 20 EUR store card, priced at 98.99 EUR, briefly cheaper than the 99.99 EUR Ultimate.
  • Family accounts: if a teenager plays on your console, store purchases can be limited. See our parental controls guide.

What we still do not know

  • The final PlayStation Store price of the upgrade in every region (Xbox lists $20.00).
  • Whether Rockstar will discount the upgrade after launch, as often happens with add-ons.
  • How the upgrade interacts with GTA Online, which Rockstar has not detailed for GTA 6 yet.
