How Many GTA 6 Pre-Orders Have Been Sold? The Estimates vs the Official Numbers

Trackers put GTA 6 at around 6.5 million digital pre-orders and $630 million. Take-Two has not given a single figure. Here is every estimate, where it comes from and how much weight it deserves.

How Many GTA 6 Pre-Orders Have Been Sold? The Estimates vs the Official Numbers

GTA 6 is the most pre-ordered game anyone has tracked, and yet nobody outside Take-Two knows exactly how many copies are reserved. The widely quoted figure of around 6.5 million digital pre-orders worth $630 million comes from a third-party estimate, not from Rockstar. The publisher itself has only ever used adjectives. Here is the full picture, two weeks before the November 19 launch.

The essentials

  • Official figure: none. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called pre-orders "unprecedented" and said they "vastly" beat internal expectations, but refused to give a number.
  • Latest widely reported estimate: about 6.45 million digital pre-orders and $630 million across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (Sensor Tower, around October 20-23, 2026).
  • Platform split: roughly 74% PS5, 26% Xbox in the latest data, down from 77/23 in August.
  • Edition split: close to 90% Ultimate Edition in the August data, an unusually premium mix.
  • What is not counted: physical retail boxes and any market the tracker cannot see. The real total is very likely higher.
  • Next possible official update: Take-Two's quarterly results on November 9.

What Take-Two has actually said

Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026. The first time Take-Two addressed them was its earnings call in early August, covering the April-June quarter. Strauss Zelnick described the level of pre-orders as "unprecedented" and said they had "vastly" exceeded the company's own forecasts. When analysts pushed for units, he declined.

His reasoning is worth keeping in mind: a pre-order is not a sale. Not a single copy has been delivered yet, and pre-orders can be cancelled (see our guide on whether you should pre-order now or wait). Take-Two prefers to report what it ships, not what it hopes to ship.

So any precise number you read today, including the ones below, is an outside estimate.

In the latest breakdown, PlayStation accounts for about 4.8 million copies and $468 million, Xbox for about 1.66 million copies and $162 million. At least one later report has relayed a higher figure (around 7.7 million), but we could not find it confirmed by the tracker itself, so treat it with extra caution.

Where these numbers come from

Almost every headline traces back to one source: the GTA 6 tracker run by Sensor Tower, which bought the analytics firm Video Game Insights in 2025. Its model reads millions of public player profiles on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam and applies statistical modelling to estimate how many accounts own or have reserved a game.

That method has real strengths and real limits:

  • It sees digital store activity only. A boxed copy bought at a retailer is invisible until it is redeemed. And as we explained, the GTA 6 physical edition has no disc, only a download code, so many box buyers will not show up until launch week.
  • Console tracking is newer than its Steam tracking, and GTA 6 is console-only at launch. The margin of error is wider than for a typical PC game.
  • Revenue is an estimate built on list prices, mixed by edition and region. Discounts, refunds and currency swings are approximations.
  • The scope is reported inconsistently. Some outlets describe the data as worldwide, others as mostly US. Check the original wording before quoting it.

None of this makes the tracker useless. It is consistent with itself, which makes it good at showing trends. Treat the absolute number as an order of magnitude, not a count.

What the trend tells us

The curve is more interesting than any single number.

A huge opening, then a plateau. Most pre-orders landed in the first weeks after June 25. By mid-August growth had slowed to a few hundred thousand a month.

Trailers move the needle. When the Extended Look aired on August 27, Sensor Tower reported daily pre-orders up 436% on the day and 572% over August 27-28 compared with the previous 30-day average. Marketing beats still convert, even for a game everyone already knows.

The pace picks up again near launch. Between early September and mid-October the estimate jumped by around 1.5 million. That fits the pattern of every big release: undecided buyers commit once a date feels real.

Xbox is catching up a little. PlayStation's share slipped from 77% to 74%, but PS5 remains the dominant platform by a wide margin.

Ultimate Edition dominates. Nearly nine in ten early pre-orders were for the $99.99 Ultimate rather than the $79.99 Standard. That share will probably fall as casual players buy at launch. If you are still choosing, our comparison of Standard vs Ultimate breaks down what the extra money buys.

How it compares to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2

Pre-order figures are not launch sales, so a direct comparison is not fair. But the official launch numbers of Rockstar's last two games give a sense of scale:

  • GTA 5 (2013): 11.21 million copies and $815.7 million in its first 24 hours, then $1 billion in three days, all confirmed by Guinness World Records. We go through how it happened in why GTA 5 shattered every sales record.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018): $725 million in its first three days, which Rockstar called the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history.

GTA 5 sold those copies on PS3 and Xbox 360, largely as physical discs. GTA 6 is selling into a far more digital market, at a higher price. Six-plus million tracked digital pre-orders, before a single day of sales, already puts it in the same league as GTA 5's record first day.

The numbers to ignore

The pre-order race has produced plenty of noise. These claims circulate on social media with no source behind them:

  • "100 million pre-orders" or "$8 billion already made"
  • "50 million pre-orders"
  • "$1 billion in the first hour"

None of them comes from Take-Two, Sensor Tower, Newzoo or any other firm that publishes its method. Several are simply launch-week sales forecasts relabelled as pre-orders. Analysts' estimates for first-week sales do circulate in a range of roughly 37 to 51 million copies, but those are forecasts of what happens after November 19, not counts of what has been reserved.

When we might get a real number

The next window is Take-Two's results on November 9, covering the July-September quarter. Zelnick may again talk about "record" demand without units, which has been the company's line all year. We cover what to watch in our Take-Two earnings preview.

The more likely moment for an official figure is just after launch. Rockstar announced GTA 5's $1 billion milestone three days after release and Red Dead Redemption 2's $725 million after its first weekend. Expect the same playbook: a launch-week or first-month number, released once copies are actually in players' hands. The game unlocks at midnight in your store's time zone, and our release time guide has the exact hour for your region.

The bottom line

  • Take-Two has confirmed record demand but no figure.
  • The best outside estimate is around 6.5 million digital pre-orders and roughly $630 million, mostly on PS5 and mostly Ultimate Edition.
  • That figure undercounts physical copies and comes with a real margin of error.
  • The first official number will most likely arrive after November 19, not before.

We will update this article when Take-Two or Rockstar publishes a confirmed figure.
