How to Gift GTA 6: Boxed Code, Digital Gift or Gift Card?
Want to give GTA 6 for a birthday or the holidays? The boxed edition is only a code, the PlayStation Store has no gift button and PS5 codes are region-locked. Here is the safest way to gift it on PS5 and Xbox.

Giving GTA 6 to someone sounds simple until you look at the details. The box contains no disc, the PlayStation Store has no "gift" button, and PS5 codes only work on an account from the right region. Pick the wrong format and your present ends up as an unusable code. Here is how each option works on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and which one to choose depending on who you are buying for.
The essentials:
- Three ways to gift GTA 6: a boxed copy (a case with a download code), a digital gift (Xbox only), or a store gift card the recipient spends on the game.
- Prices: Standard Edition $79.99 / 79.99 EUR, Ultimate Edition $99.99 / 99.99 EUR, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced.
- There is no disc in the box. Every boxed edition holds a single-use download code, so the recipient still needs an internet connection and a lot of free space.
- PS5 codes are region-locked. Rockstar's support page says a PS5 code only redeems on a PlayStation account from the same regional market. Xbox codes are not locked that way.
- The PlayStation Store cannot send a game as a gift. On PS5, the workaround is a boxed copy or a PlayStation Store gift card.
- Check the recipient's age. Every main GTA game has been rated 18+ (PEGI 18, ESRB M). Expect the same for GTA 6.
Option 1: the boxed copy, the most "giftable" format
If you want something to wrap and put under the tree, the boxed edition is the obvious choice. Just know what you are actually giving: a case, cover art and a code card. Rockstar confirmed in June 2026 that both the Standard and Ultimate boxed editions contain a one-time download code instead of a disc. We cover what is in the box in our article on the GTA 6 physical edition with no disc.
Why it works well as a present:
- It looks like a gift. You hand over a real object, not an email.
- The price is the same as digital. $79.99 or $99.99 at most retailers, and some stores discount the box.
- No account needed on your side. The recipient redeems the code on their own console.
What to watch out for:
- Do not open or scratch the code card. Once it is redeemed, the license is tied to one account for good. A box with a revealed code cannot be returned or resold.
- On PS5, buy the box in the recipient's region. A PS5 code bought in Europe will not redeem on a US PlayStation account, and the other way around. If you live in the same country as the person you are buying for and both of you use local accounts, there is nothing to worry about. If you are sending the game abroad, or the recipient uses an account created in another country, ask which region their PlayStation account is set to before you pay.
- Xbox boxes are simpler. Rockstar says Xbox Series X|S codes are not region-locked, so an Xbox box is the safer bet when the recipient lives in another country.
- Pick the right console. A PS5 code does not work on Xbox, and neither works on PS4, Xbox One or PC. GTA 6 is a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S game only.
Boxed copies reach shops from November 12, 2026, a week before the November 19 launch, so the box is easy to find for a birthday or the holidays after release.
Option 2: gifting the digital version directly
This is where the two consoles differ the most.
On Xbox: "Buy as gift"
The Microsoft Store has a "Buy as gift" option on console, PC and the web. You choose a friend from your list or type an email address, and the recipient receives a code ready to redeem. Two rules have applied to Xbox gifting for years, and you should expect them to apply to GTA 6:
- Pre-orders cannot be gifted. Microsoft's gifting rules have excluded pre-orders since the feature launched, so the option should only show up once the game is out on November 19.
- Sender and recipient must be in the same country. A digital gift bought in France cannot be redeemed on a US account.
If the button is not shown on the GTA 6 page, that is usually why. Fall back on a gift card (option 3).
On PS5: no gift button
The PlayStation Store has never offered direct game gifting, and Sony has not announced any plan to add it. You cannot buy GTA 6 on your account and send it to someone else's. Sharing your own account with someone else to "lend" them the game is not a gift either, and it puts your account at risk.
So on PS5, gifting the digital version means one of two things: a boxed copy (option 1) or a PlayStation Store gift card (option 3).
Option 3: the gift card, flexible but less exciting
A PlayStation Store or Xbox gift card adds money to the recipient's wallet, which they then spend on the edition they want. It is the most flexible option, and it removes the risk of buying the wrong edition or the wrong console version.
How to do it right:
- Cover the full price. In the US, store prices are shown before sales tax, so a $79.99 game can cost more at checkout depending on the state. A $100 card covers the Standard Edition in every case and the Ultimate Edition in most states. In Europe, prices include VAT: 79.99 EUR or 99.99 EUR is the final amount.
- Combine cards if needed. Wallet balances add up, so two smaller cards work as well as one large one. Any money left over stays in the wallet for later purchases.
- Buy a store gift card, not a subscription card. A "PlayStation Plus" or "Game Pass" card does not pay for GTA 6.
- Match the region here too. A gift card only works in the country it was issued for. A euro PlayStation card will not top up a US account.
- Buy from an official retailer. Gift cards are a favorite target of scammers. Never buy one from a stranger, and never share the code with anyone but the recipient. Our guide on how to avoid GTA 6 pre-order scams lists the usual tricks.
The downside: a gift card is less fun to unwrap, and nothing guarantees the money will actually be spent on GTA 6. Writing "for GTA 6" on the card does wonders.
Standard or Ultimate: which edition to give?
Both editions contain the full game, the same story and the same map of Leonida. The Ultimate Edition adds in-game content: exclusive vehicles, weapons, a garage, five shops and two extra missions, for $20 more. An Ultimate upgrade is also sold separately, so a Standard Edition gift never locks the recipient out of anything.
Our advice: if you are not sure, give the Standard Edition. If the recipient is a big GTA fan who already knows they want everything, the Ultimate is the nicer present. Our Standard or Ultimate comparison breaks down every bonus.
Which option for which situation?
| Situation | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Present to unwrap, same country, PS5 | Boxed PS5 copy | Same region as the account, looks like a gift |
| Present to unwrap, same country, Xbox | Boxed Xbox copy | No region lock to worry about |
| Recipient lives abroad, PS5 | PlayStation gift card from their country, or a box bought locally there | PS5 codes and cards are region-locked |
| Recipient lives abroad, Xbox | Boxed Xbox copy | Xbox codes are not region-locked |
| You do not know their console or edition | Gift card | They choose, nothing to exchange |
| Last-minute gift on launch day or after, Xbox | "Buy as gift" on the Microsoft Store | Delivered by email in minutes, same country only |
Before you give it: three practical checks
1. Free space. GTA 6 needs up to 212 GB depending on the console, according to Rockstar. A recipient with a full PS5 may need to delete games or plan for extra storage. Our article on the GTA 6 pre-load and its 212 GB has the details.
2. The download time. Because the box holds only a code, the full game has to come down over the internet. If you give the game on launch day or later, warn the recipient that they may not be playing the same evening on a slow connection. A gift given before November 19 lets them pre-load in advance.
3. The age rating. GTA has always been an adult series, and GTA 6 is not expected to be an exception. If you are buying for a teenager, talk to the parents first. If you are the parent, our guide to GTA 6 parental controls on PS5 and Xbox explains how to limit access and in-game spending.
Bonuses: who gets them?
The Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus is attached to any edition bought before November 20, 2026, boxed or digital, so a boxed copy bought as a pre-order should carry it too. The free month of GTA+ is reserved for digital pre-orders, so it does not come with a box or with a game bought from a gift card after launch. A gift bought after November 20 simply comes without the pre-order bonus: the game itself is identical.
Our verdict
- Same country, you know their console: the boxed copy is the best present. It is the same price as digital and it can be wrapped.
- Different country on PS5: avoid the box, unless it was bought where the recipient lives. A gift card from their region is safer.
- You are not sure of anything: a gift card for the right store and the right country is the option that never fails.
Whatever you choose, keep the receipt and do not reveal the code. A sealed box can still be exchanged. A redeemed code cannot.
