GTA 5 Fast Swim Cheat Code: How to Swim Faster on Every Platform

Swimming across the ocean in GTA 5 story mode is slow going by default. The Fast Swim cheat fixes that instantly: enter it on PC, dial it on your in-game phone, or land the right button combo on your controller, and Michael, Franklin or Trevor cuts through the water noticeably faster for as long as the cheat stays active.

How to enter the Fast Swim cheat on PC

Press the tilde key (~) to open the developer console, then type GOTGILLS and hit Enter. You will hear the usual cheat confirmation sound and a small icon appears on screen while the effect is active. There is no controller shortcut on PC unless you are using a gamepad plugged into the same phone-cheat system, in which case the phone method below works too.

How to dial it on the in-game phone

On PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC, pull out your character's phone and dial 1-999-468-44557, which spells out 1-999-GOT-GILLS. This is the same trick Rockstar used for every current-gen cheat: memorable numbers that map to a word. The call disconnects automatically once the cheat is registered.

PlayStation controller button combo

On PS3, PS4 and PS5, you can skip the phone entirely and enter a directional combo instead: Left, Left, L1, Right, Right, R2, Left, L2, Right. This is the original PS3-era method and still works on every later PlayStation release of GTA 5.

Xbox controller button combo

Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series players get the same shortcut with Xbox button names: Left, Left, LB, Right, Right, RT, Left, LT, Right. Input it reasonably fast, outside of a menu, for it to register.

Does Fast Swim work in GTA Online?

No. Fast Swim, like every other GTA 5 cheat code, is locked to single-player story mode. Rockstar disabled all cheat codes in GTA Online from day one to keep the shared world fair, and that has never changed. If you want an edge underwater in GTA Online, your only real option is gear like the Scuba gear or a faster vehicle, not a cheat code.

Why bother with the Fast Swim cheat

Los Santos and Blaine County both have a lot of ocean, and swimming at normal speed to reach an island, a sunken plane, or a rare underwater collectible takes forever. Fast Swim turns a multi-minute crossing into a short one, which is handy if you are chasing every corner of the map, hunting down rumors like the Kraken myth off the coast of Los Santos, or just want to explore the coastline without waiting on load times for a boat.

A few things to know before you dial in GOTGILLS or any other code:

• Cheats disable trophies and achievements for the rest of that play session.
• The game will not autosave while a cheat is active, so save manually before or after using one if you care about your progress.
• Fast Swim and every cheat code on this list only work in the single-player campaign, never in GTA Online.
