GTA 5 Slow Motion Cheat Code: How to Slow Down Time on Any Platform

Time doesn't have to move at normal speed in Los Santos. GTA 5's slow motion cheat drags the entire world - your car, the traffic, every bullet in the air - down to a crawl, and it works on every platform the game ever shipped on. Here's the exact code for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC, plus what the effect actually does once it's on.

The essentials:

  • PC: type SLOWMO in the console (press ~ to open it)
  • PlayStation: Triangle, Left, Right, Right, Square, R2, R1
  • Xbox: Y, Left, Right, Right, X, RT, RB
  • Phone (all platforms): dial 1-999-756-966 (1-999-SLOW-MO)
  • The code is a toggle with three intensity levels - a fourth entry snaps you back to normal speed
  • Single-player only, and it turns off achievements/trophies for the session

How to activate the slow motion cheat

Unlike weapon or vehicle cheats, slow motion doesn't need a specific location or a car under you - it works anywhere in story mode, on foot or behind the wheel.

On PC, press the tilde key (~ on a US keyboard, the grave/backtick key, or ¬ on UK layouts) to bring down the console, then type:

SLOWMO

and hit Enter. No dashes, no spaces.

On PS4 and PS5, enter this button combination while playing (not while paused):

Triangle, Left, Right, Right, Square, R2, R1

On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the equivalent is:

Y, Left, Right, Right, X, RT, RB

You have a few seconds between inputs, but don't dawdle - if you pause too long between button presses, the game resets the sequence and you'll need to start over.

On every platform, you can skip the button combo entirely and use Michael, Franklin or Trevor's in-game phone instead. Open the phone, go to Contacts, and dial:

1-999-756-966

which spells out 1-999-SLOW-MO. This works identically on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, so it's the easiest version to remember if you don't want to memorize a controller combo.

What actually happens when you turn it on

The cheat doesn't just slow your character down - it slows the entire simulation. Traffic crawls, pedestrians move like they're wading through syrup, gunfire and explosions play out frame by frame, and even ambient sound stretches and drops in pitch. It's the same engine-level time dilation used in scripted cinematic moments, just handed to the player on demand.

Entering the code repeatedly cycles through three increasing levels of slow motion, each noticeably more extreme than the last. Enter it a fourth time and the game snaps back to normal speed - so the cheat is a four-step loop rather than a simple on/off switch.

A couple of practical notes worth knowing before you rely on it:

  • It doesn't pause mission timers or the in-game clock. If you're on a timed objective, the countdown still ticks at normal speed even though everything on screen looks like it's underwater. Using this mid-mission can cost you a fail you didn't expect.
  • Getting in or out of a vehicle can cancel it early for some players, so don't be surprised if the effect drops out mid-drive.
  • It's single-player exclusive. The code does nothing in GTA Online, and Rockstar has never brought cheat codes to the multiplayer side of the game.

How to turn the slow motion cheat off

Just repeat the same input - phone number, button combo, or SLOWMO in the console - until you cycle past the third level and land back on normal speed. There's no separate "cancel" code; it's the same trigger every time, and the game tracks which of the four states you're currently in.

If you lose track of how many times you've entered it, the safest bet is to keep repeating the code and watching the game speed: once movement and sound return to normal, you're done.

Does it affect trophies and achievements?

Yes. Like every other cheat code in GTA 5's story mode, activating slow motion disables trophies and achievements for that play session. It doesn't touch your save file permanently and there's no penalty beyond that session lock - reload or start a new session and achievements track normally again. If you're going for a 100% completion run or chasing a platinum, save your cheat experiments for after you've banked the trophies you want.

Why it's still worth using

Slow motion is one of the few GTA 5 cheats that's genuinely useful for something other than chaos. It's the cheat people reach for to line up a tricky jump, get a clean screenshot or video clip of an explosion, or just survive a firefight against six cops with a pistol. Combined with a good camera angle, it turns an ordinary shootout into something that looks like it was staged by a stunt team.

It also costs nothing to try. There's no unlock requirement, no mission gate, and no download - just the code, on whichever platform you're playing.

Where this cheat comes from

Slow motion isn't a GTA 5 invention. The same trick - stack the code, cycle through intensity levels, hit a limit and reset - dates back to GTA San Andreas, where the Xbox and PS2 versions used almost identical button logic to slow down time on command. Rockstar carried the feature through GTA IV and into GTA 5 largely unchanged, which is part of why the input feels a little old-fashioned next to modern menu-based cheat systems: it's a holdover from an era when cheat codes were memorized combos, not toggles in a pause menu.

That history also explains why the phone number exists at all. GTA 5 was the first game in the series with a functioning in-game smartphone, so Rockstar mapped every legacy button code to a phone number spelling out the cheat's name - useful for players who grew up on the newer games and never learned the old combos.

Quick answers

Does the slow motion cheat work while driving? Yes. It slows the vehicle, the surrounding traffic and the camera all at once, which is exactly why it's popular for lining up jumps and stunts.

Can I stack it with other cheats, like invincibility or weapons? Yes. Cheats in GTA 5 don't cancel each other out, so you can combine slow motion with health/armor, invincibility or a weapon cheat freely. Just remember each additional cheat also disables achievements for the session, same as slow motion does on its own.

Will the cheat carry over if I save and reload? No. Slow motion (like every cheat code) resets when you load a save or start a new session - it's tied to your current play session only, not written into the save file.

Other GTA 5 cheats worth knowing

If slow motion got you curious about what else the story mode cheat list can do, these cover the rest of the essentials:

Slow motion is one of the codes that has survived nearly unchanged since GTA San Andreas, so there's a decent chance it - or something close to it - shows up again when GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026.
